From the Head of Middle School (Issue 1 2017)

Written on the 9 February 2017

Dear Parents and Carers,

It has been a very pleasing and positive start to the year and again I extend a very warm welcome to all families, including those new to our community. I'd also like to welcome the following staff to (and back to) the Middle School for 2017.

Welcome back to:

  • Siobhan Brophy - Counsellor
  • Sam Rossi - Year 6 Teacher
  • Mark Semmler - Japanese Teacher.

The following staff are new to the College:

  • Tom Cross - Japanese Teacher
  • Lucy Pickering - Year 6 English, Humanities and Social Sciences (HASS) and Religion
  • Emily Upton - Year 8 Maths and Science.

Parent Information Night
It was terrific to see so many parents and carers attend last Wednesday evening. Effective schooling can only exist as a partnership - built on the back of productive relationships and effective communication. A key role of your son's homeroom teacher is to be this conduit to ensure that relationships are nurtured, communication is passed, concerns addressed and that the needs of a holistic education are met.

Chromebooks
This year, student Chromebooks were purchased via an online portal. If you haven't purchased a Chromebook and would like to, the portal can be accessed at http://portal.lwt.com.au/shc. Just a reminder that it is an expectation that students bring their Chromebooks to school each day fully charged.

Parents and Friends
Last week you should have received an email in regards to a forum to be held on Thursday 23 February. I am keen to establish a Parents and Friends Committee at the Middle School. This would effectively become a sub-committee of the existing group based at the Senior School. It is envisaged that the group would aim to:

  • Strengthen the relationship between home and school
  • Foster cooperation and fellowship amongst parents, friends and staff
  • Stimulate an active interest in the life of the school and develop practices that can support teaching and learning at the Middle School.

Please contact Jacqui Beecroft (jacquelinebeecroft@shc.sa.edu.au) if you did not receive the email and would like to be part of the group.

Week 2
This week our Year 6 and 8 students have participated in their respective camps to Wellington and Hindmarsh Island. Although the program was amended due to the extreme weather, I would like to thank the staff who helped with the activities and supervision of the students. It is always demanding to be "on call" for the duration of the camp and I am truly grateful for their time and effort.

Tim Mullin
Head of Middle School
