Japanese Movie Evening (Issue 9 2017)

Written on the 22 June 2017

A Japanese Movie Evening was held at Senior School on Thursday 18 May in Week 3, Term 2. Sixty-eight students who are currently studying Stage 1 and 2 Japanese at the Senior campus along with Year 9 Japanese students from the Middle School and Marymount College came together to enjoyed two Japanese movies and a pizza dinner. The evening was a great success, finishing with spontaneous cheering and clapping from the students.

Below are some of the comments from students:
"It was very interesting to see a different side of Japanese culture in a casual setting. We watched two films, one anime and one liveaction - both very different genres. I really enjoyed the movies as well as being with my classmates outside of the classroom."

"We watched two movies called 'Summer Wars' and 'Handsome suit'. Both movies were interesting to watch as they were completely different to any Western movies that I have seen or am used to seeing. It was the first time I had ever seen a Japanese liveaction comedy and it was very funny and enjoyable. I would definitely love to have a movie evening like this again as it was really fun and interesting to learn about Japanese culture through a fun activity like this event."

"The first movie, 'Summer Wars', was very fluid with animation and colour. The story was definitely not what you would expect from an animated movie as I was on the edge of my seat the whole time. The family aspect of the film shared how much Japanese people value and care about their family and how strong their bond is. The second movie, 'Handsome suit', was incredibly funny with such a ridiculous plot and out of the ordinary characters. I was laughing so hard I had tears in my eyes. It is a shame I did not discover movies like this earlier. It really showed how funny Japanese comedies can be and how they can be just as funny as western comedies. Overall, I really enjoyed the movies and I hope to enjoy similar events in the future."
