Supporting your child's safety online (Issue 7 2017)

Written on the 25 May 2017

On Wednesday 10 May, Sonya Ryan from the Carly Ryan Foundation spoke to our Year 10 students during their Pastoral Care lesson, and then to parents at a forum later that evening. Sonya's sessions were very powerful as they explored her personal journey of losing her daughter Carly to an online predator and then the work she has done since to educate and protect young people from suffering a similar fate.

Sonya's sessions provided students with an understanding of the practical steps they can take to protect their privacy and safety. Sonya also explained to parents the risks of some the most popular apps that that young people are using and failing victim to. Sonya provided step by step guides for how parents can support their children (and themselves) to ensure that they have the safe privacy and security setting on their apps.

Sonya provided a number of fact sheets that have been developed by the Australian Federal Police. I have included the first factsheet below.

Over the coming newsletters, I will be including a factsheet on a number of other popular apps.

If you would like a copy of all of the handouts that Sonya provided in her session please contact Kathryn Mortlock at kathrynmortlock@shc.sa.edu.au.
