Last week we introduced our 2026 College Captains, along with our 2026 Year 12 Mission Captains, Boarding Captains and Deputy Boarding Captains. We congratulate these students and look forward to the contributions they will make to our community.
To our Sacred Heart College community
The announcement of the 2026 College Captains, Mission Captains, and Boarding Captains at last week’s R U OK? Day Assembly marked an important moment in the life of our College. We congratulate these students on the trust placed in them by their peers and staff, and we look forward to the leadership, example, and spirit they will bring to Sacred Heart in the year ahead.
As we move towards the end of Term 3, it is a timely reminder that leadership at Sacred Heart takes many forms – from formal roles such as College Captains through to the daily contributions of students, staff, and families across our community. This edition of Hearts News shares some of those stories and celebrates the collective efforts that continue to strengthen our College.

Celebrating the significant men in our lives this Father’s Day
Last Friday, Sacred Heart College welcomed the fathers, grandfathers, and other significant family members of our Year 7-12 students for a Father’s Day celebration at Champagnat Campus.
Our special guests enjoyed coffee and a variety of sweet treats, whilst a highlight of the event included performances by student pianists and vocalists (Oliver, Kara, Emmalyn, Zara, Elissa & Kirsten). A heartwarming slideshow featuring memories and messages from students about their fathers and father figures was also played and guests were treated to a small gift created by the Champagnat ‘Jobs on Demand’ group. Thank you to all the family members that were able to join us.
All photos from the 2025 Father’s Day celebration are able to be viewed and downloaded via Festival Photography’s website.

Immersion Quiz Night
The 2025 Immersion Quiz Night was a hugely successful evening, with more than 400 family members and friends of the Sacred Heart College community in attendance. Funds raised from the Immersion event support Australian Marist Solidarity, which provides essential resources and funding for education, school facilities, and families in need. This year’s Great Gatsby themed Quiz Night raised approximately $43,000 – testament to the amazing generosity of the wider Hearts community.
A huge thanks to the organisations, businesses, individuals and families who contributed to the silent auction, live auction, raffle, wine wall and quiz prizes. A full list of our Quiz Night Sponsors can be found here.
On behalf of the 2025 Immersion teams – THANK YOU! We now eagerly anticipate the upcoming Immersion trips in the coming months.
Marist Connect Night
Last Tuesday evening, students from the Year 11 and 12 Game Changers program gathered with students from Cardijn College to take part in a Marist Connect Night, which occurs once a term. The Connect Night took place at Aquinas College, a residential college for university students, which, throughout its history has been linked to the Marist Brothers.
The Game Changers students enjoyed going for a tour around the grounds of the college and hearing from resident students about their journeys of transitioning from high school to further study. The night was centred on a common theme of ‘looking beyond’ which provided students with the opportunity to consider their hopes for the coming year, as well as the milestones they have achieved so far. There was a wonderful atmosphere of Family Spirit between students of both schools as they learnt more about the aspirations and goals of their peers.
Following the Connect Night, a meal was shared around the table between Sacred Heart College and Cardijn students to celebrate their involvement in and dedication to the Game Changers program in 2025.
Game Changers La Valla Retreat Day

Recently, Year 9 and 10 Game Changers students took part in their La Valla Retreat Day, allowing students to learn more about their Marist identity, connect with one another and develop ideas that they would like to bring into the school community.
The Retreat Day focused on the Marist Characteristic of Simplicity and provided students with the opportunity to consider more deeply how they can practice simplicity in their everyday lives. Students also learnt about various projects led by Australian Marist Solidarity (AMS) in international Marist communities such as India, Fiji, Solomon Islands and Bouganville, and reflected on the ways in which simplicity is demonstrated by those working in these communities. To culminate their learnings from the Retreat Day, the Game Changers students collated ideas about how they can foster opportunities for the school community to practice simplicity more often which included activities such as a school vegetable garden or arts and crafts during lunch times.
Year 9’s ‘Pie of the Month’ a sell out at Brighton Jetty Bakery
In Semester 1, Year 9 Food Technology students completed their assessment by designing and creating a pie worthy of being sold as the ‘Pie of the Month’ at Brighton Jetty Bakery. This is the 5th year that we have been fortunate to run this competition, and following design principles, the students researched, planned, created and evaluated their creations, in the hopes of producing the perfect pie.
Naturally, any old pie would not do, so in the lead up they were encouraged to push their gastronomical boundaries by trying different food flavour combinations such as banana and green pesto; oreos and orange juice; and white chocolate and caviar. Over 50 pies were presented to the bakers at Brighton Jetty Bakery for judging.
Following an Instagram poll of the bakery’s Top 5, the eventual winners were Emily Starkey and Annabel Drabsch with their Chicken Parmigiana Pie. This pie was so popular that it sold out the following morning! We have it on good authority that it will return in the near future. Congratulations to Annabel and Emily, and thank you to Dave and Dahlia Matkovic, the owners of Brighton Jetty Bakery, for their ongoing support of our students and Food Technology program.
Adelaide 36ers inspire our students
Last Tuesday (2 September), some of our basketball students had the exciting opportunity to attend a court session, Q&A and meet-and-greet with Adelaide 36ers players, Deng Manyang and Flynn Cameron. During the session, the players shared inspiring stories about their basketball journeys, offering valuable insights into the dedication and perseverance required to succeed in the sport. Students, Lucy, Isobel and Rosie then led an engaging and entertaining Q&A session, uncovering fun facts like their most memorable team victories, and advice on chasing dreams and achieving success. The event concluded with an opportunity for photographs and autographs, where every student received a gifted singlet and even had their basketball shoes signed by the players!
The students thoroughly enjoyed the chance to connect with the athletes on a personal level. We are grateful for the College’s partnership with the Adelaide 36ers and look forward to the continued opportunities this collaboration will bring to students in the future.
Year 7s turning food waste into compost at STEM MaD Showcase
On Tuesday, the Champagnat Campus Year 7 STEM MaD Team participated in the CESA STEM MaD Showcase held at the Adelaide Convention Centre. The team (Elyssa, Emelia and Ashlyn) displayed their Term 1 and 2 project work titled ‘SCB, Sustainable Compost Blender’. The SCB is a solar powered compost bin with an installed blender. Leftover food scraps placed into the bin are churned by the blade and turned into fertiliser for use in the garden. The team’s idea was to address the current food waste issue in Australia and their prototype was created using onshape and a 3D printer.
The showcase day was filled with excitement as Catholic schools from around South Australia competed with their displayed ideas. Students also engaged in a Q&A with guest speaker Jon Soong, CEO of Makers Empire, and a Medieval Mechanics session with Adelaide University. We congratulate the team on their efforts and thank them for their dedication and commitment to this project in 2025!
Trade Maths students visit community garden
This week the Year 12 Trade Skills Mathematics class got a tour of the North Brighton Community Garden. Beau Warren, current Chairperson of the garden and the landscape designer showed us around and gave us the opportunity to ask questions about the design of the garden and how it operates. He was open and helped us see the importance of permaculture and biodiversity. Hopefully the students can use the new knowledge and understanding with their own community garden planning for their external task.
