Basketball - Girls (Issue 6 2017)
Written on the 19 October 2017
This year we are lucky to have a great bunch of Year 10 girl basketballers, and for the first time in a while we entered a team in the Year 10 Girls Basketball Statewide Knockout competition. Played at the College in the new Br Joseph McAteer Centre, the girls took on two teams in the hope of making it through to the finals. What a great experience it was!
Game one was against Adelaide High. I was so impressed with the way the girls handled themselves against the much taller and more fancied Adelaide team. Beautifully led by coach, Jordan Walker-Roberts, the team fought hard to be even during the third quarter and we all thought that they might just pull off the win of the year. However it was not to be - Adelaide turned it on in the last quarter with some awesome shooting by their Australian Representatives. A loss of 10 points is a fantastic effort and has made our coaches very excited for next year. Strong performances were played out by Chelsea Giles and Kasey Hywood.
Game 2 was against Cornerstone College. After a loss to Adelaide it was always going to be hard to get up to play this game. Credit to Manager, Mary Wilkins, for the sustenance and hydration as the girls came back fired up and ready to play. SHC got the jump and led all the way to a win. Cornerstone fought back in the third quarter, but SHC were too strong. Strong performance by Gemma Horgan.
Following on from the knockout and to continue the drive for next year, I am pleased to announce that we are having a Girls Open A team play Saturday mornings at Cabra. All year levels are welcome to play in this short 5 week season starting in Week 1.
