Written on the 20 September 2018
In 2018, Basketball at Sacred Heart Middle continued to attract many players with over 50 boys playing across six teams this season. Old Scholar, Harry Sires, once again shared his experience and knowledge of the game by coaching the A and B grade teams. The C grade was coached by Rhett Mieszkuc with the D grade teams coached by Ashleigh Bryans, Milad El-Tawil and Matt Druce.
Team A dominated from the start, their defensive pressure was able to put them into a comfortable position early on each game. Their depth showed throughout the year as the whole team was able to play strong minutes and all players worked well together. They finished the season with 6 wins and 2 losses.
Team B started off the season strong. There were a few uncertainties as the boys got to know each other and learn playing styles and after a couple of weeks, players broke out of their shells and clicked better than ever. Their play style was team based and efficient. They finished the season with 5 wins and 2 losses.
Team C had a very successful year with 6 wins and 2 losses. The most pleasing aspect of coaching these boys was their willingness to put team success ahead of individual statistics. The highlight was the great win at Rostrevor during Inter-Col.
While Team D1 struggled this season against strong competition, the boys always presented with a positive attitude and learned some new skills along the way. Team D2 enjoyed a very successful season winning all but two games, one which was a loss and the other a draw, both to other Sacred Heart teams. Team D3 enjoyed 2 wins and 2 draws during the season and they always displayed great team work.
