Courage, willpower and teamwork carry students to greater heights (Issue 2 2017)
Written on the 22 February 2017
On Sunday 19 February, 18 students from our Red (Year 10) Remar Caravel completed the High Ropes Challenge at Woodhouse Adventure Centre. Braving the heights (and the wet weather) students displayed both courage and resilience in conquering their fears. Teaming up in groups of 5, students took turns climbing, belaying and anchoring. It was great to witness how the students supported each other through the challenges; cheers and words of encouragement were plentiful throughout the event as everyone learned to fully trust in their team mates. At the end of the day, we were all left with a sense of humility and accomplishment.
As a caravel, we now have a firm knowledge that, for us, "the only way is up"! The following quote by Chris Hadfield (accomplished astronaut and space engineer) seems particularly fitting:
Ultimately, leadership is not about glorious crowning acts. It's about keeping your team focused on a goal and motivated to do their best to achieve it, especially when the stakes are high and the consequences really matter. It is about laying the groundwork for others' success, and then standing back and letting them shine.
