The Grand Final Round of the Primary School Knockout Cricket Competition saw the boys from Sacred Heart take out their 6th championship and 5th on the trot. Due to the recent poor weather the scheduled conference at Park 25 against Greenwith Primary School was shifted to Victoria Park hard wicket.
SHC won the toss and elected to bat on the windy and gloomy morning as progress was quickly stalled by a fierce Greenwith bowling attack. As the two inform openers went early, initial hope on premiership success looked in doubt, however, much like the rest of the season, the middle order stood up when required to steady the ship. Some late big hitting from the tail end saw the boys finish with a competitive score of 94. Coach David Raphael set the challenge in the innings break to harness the new ball and take advantage of early wickets and the openers immediately stepped up.
Chase Humphrey and Harrison Francis (Captain) have been superb throughout the Knockout Championship and they did not let up this week. Their accuracy with the ball combined with the tight fielding of the rest of the team did not allow the opposition to get a start. Due to the intense first session, the first drinks break saw the required run rate stretch beyond 6 per over. Greenwith made sure to use every ball in the last few over which saw Kieren Scannell putting in a lot of work as Wicket Keeper. Greenwith simply did not stand a chance against our superior bowling attack and consequently found themselves 30 runs short at the end of the days play.
Overall, it was a fantastic all round performance by the boys to not only win this game but to progress with ease throughout the whole championship. Coach David Raphael set a precedence throughout the year and the boys continually stood up to the challenge to succeed and most importantly enjoy cricket.
Congratulations to the 2018 Primary School Knockout Cricket Champions and on behalf of the school, I would like to thank all those involved in making the cricket program run smoothly throughout the year.
