From the Assistant to the Principal - Champagnat Project (Issue 8 2018)

Written on the 7 June 2018

Last week we held our termly Champagnat Parent Forum and provided families with some brief updates about different aspects currently being developed in preparation for Champagnat Campus 2019. With just over 24 Working Parties meeting on a regular basis, there is certainly much happening across our existing Marymount and Middle School Campuses! I wish to acknowledge the work of the Champagant Senior Leadership Team and the many staff who are leading and contributing to the different groups.

Bus Update
Operations Manager, Peter McCabe, gave an update of the plans to secure a Bus between Somerton Park and Mitchell Park. We are in discussion with Adelaide Coachlines and are proposing two buses each morning and afternoon both ways from Somerton Park to Mitchell Park. The route will be direct, down Oaklands and Daws Road, with two proposed stops along the way (either side of the road in the vicinity of the dog park and near the skate park next to the Warradale Army Barracks). The number of users will determine the size and number of buses and as a result, we will survey parents during Term 3 to establish demand for the service. While the cost is yet to be determined, other schools typically charge $5 to $6 per day, but given the distance we are hopeful the amount to be less.

Student Transition
The Student Transition Working Party has been planning future events to support learners to build cross campus relationships, create House identity and build connections with educators from both campuses. We are planning one transition experience per term, with the first to be held on the last day of Term 2. Learners will separate into year levels for transition days and will then break up into small House based groups. Activities for each term will focus on the following themes:

Term 2 - Relationships
Term 3 - Positive Education & Formation
Term 4 - Site Orientation

More information will provided to families in the coming week outlining details for the end of Term 2 Transition Day.

Camps
We shared with families the themes and proposed venues for our Year Level camps for 2019 and beyond and outlined that Canberra will not feature in the Camp structure into the future.

Year 7 - Transition and Relationship Building (Wallaroo & Victor Harbor)
Year 8 - Outdoor Ed/Aquatics (Hindmarsh Island)
Year 9 - Rite Journey Camp (various sections of the Heysen Trail)

We recognise however, that many learners may have been anticipating a Canberra trip in 2019 and therefore we are proposing an optional trip to Canberra for 2019 only. The trip will be outside of the normal camp structure and will be an additional expense for those who choose to attend. We are currently establishing costings, but are anticipating the cost per student to be around $1000. Early next term we will send out expressions of interest to our 2019 Year 7 families to establish numbers interested in the optional Canberra trip.

As we move towards the end of Term 2 we are looking forward to our Professional Learning Week in Week 10 where staff from Marymount and Middle School will come together for further learning in the areas of Positive Education and Visible Learning.
