Our Year 7 and 9 learners joined over a million students across Australia last week as they completed the annual NAPLAN assessments. The data gained from NAPLAN has proven value - these are the only National set of education data available in Australia, which inform decisions about improving learning for all learners. This information will complement the broader assessment and reporting information provided by your child's teachers in reports, interviews, profiles and other means. For parents, NAPLAN is a tool to track their child's literacy and numeracy skills and make comparisons with the rest of Australia's children. In September this year, parents will receive a report indicating their child's level of achievement. These reports will be used to open dialogue between parents, teachers and school leadership to support our learners in achieving their full potential.
It's a full calendar of sport over the winter months, inclusive of weekly games and state-wide knock-out competitions. Student participation is high and the girls continue to impress with their court/field demeanour and sportsmanship. Winter sport provides opportunities for our learners to have fun, keep fit and develop new skills in team work, sport and resilience. It is wonderful to see so many of our parents, Year 12 students and old scholars volunteering to coach, sharing their love of the game and continuing to connect with our community.
Attendance, a priority for all
Attendance at school is fundamental to student learning and achievement. There is considerable research to suggest that academic outcomes are enhanced by maximising attendance in school. When a child misses school, even if it seems like a short period of time, it will have a direct impact their learning and progress. There are also social implications that can lead to anxiety and school refusal. I ask parents to consider the following:
I encourage parents to contact a member of the Marymount Pastoral Care Team should they have concerns about their child's attendance or wellbeing. Our staff will work in partnership with you to support, guide and nurture your child, ensuring they are provided every possible learning opportunity.
