Knockout Rugby (Issue 3 2018) Sport
Written on the 31 May 2018
The SHC Rugby League Knockout Team travelled to Wirreanda High School for Round 1 of the tournament and had two convincing wins against Wirreanda High School and Willunga High School. The success achieved on this day earned Sacred Heart a ticket to Round 2 and ultimately the Grand Final, held at Dry Creek on Thursday 1 May.
The Hearts had a squad of 24 player who were interchanged throughout the Rounds depending on injury and availability. On the day of the Grand Final, the team was comprised of 14 players which meant only one sub; the boys were going to have to push through fatigue and share the sub to get through the day.
In the Semi-Final, our boys worked hard to defeat Golden Grove High, which meant progressing to the Grand Final against Le Fevre High School; it ended up being a very exciting game!
In the Final against Le Fevre High, our boys were slow to get started and found ourselves down 4-0 at half time and with 10 minutes to go in the final term, we were still down 10-4. There were a few fleeting moments of doubt, but the boys never gave up. In the last 7 minutes the boys produced three great tries, 2 to Xavier Robbins on the wing to give us a great win. Sean Ross was the standout performer of the day and went on to be awarded Player of the Match.
The boys were very excited with what they had achieved. For them to come from behind with a win, was an excellent demonstration of their courage and a never say die attitude. They did Sacred Heart College proud.
