Family Spirit Mural

Last week we saw students come together in celebration of the Arts for Arts Week 2022 (23-27 May).

On 25 May, a group of Year 9 and 10 students created a new mural with the theme of Family Spirit as the focus. Ms McVicar from Marcelin Campus was present to assist with the mural. The design was created by Year 11 student, Izzy Keenan at the end of 2021. A group of Year 9 students arrived at the art room to start begin blocking in the main colours.

Throughout the incursion, there was a lot of painting, sketching, and conversing. It was undoubtedly a wonderful event with numerous chats and laughs taking place. Above all, we were able to make a beautiful, meaningful mural encompassing the theme of Family Spirit, which will grace the wall in the quad outside of the Kavanagh Room at Champagnat. Look out for connections and representations of each House – Chanel, Chavoin, Fourviere, Marian and Montagne.

Lunchtime Music – ‘Rock the Quad

The Year 10/11 Music Industry students and the Stage 2 Music Performance ensembles travelled to Champagnat to perform in the quad at lunchtime. The crowd enjoyed the live music atmosphere and Champagnat staff were excited to see their former students back in action!

CESA Awards

The Senior Vocal Ensemble recently had their first gig for the year singing at the Catholic Education SA Awards on 12 May in the Br Joseph McAteer Function Centre. Some student soloists accompanied by Mrs Brookes, and duo, Grace Durrans and Caitlin Bailey, also entertained guests on arrival.

Adam Page entertains Year 8s

On Wednesday 25 May, Adam Page, a multi-instrumentalist, composer, music educator and record producer based in Adelaide, gave a performance to the Year 8 students.

He started by improvising a song. It was amazing to see someone just make a piece of music from the top of his head. Next he made a song with someone’s name, starting with their name and then utilising layers to create a well rounded song with multiple loops and layers. He even made a song with his beard to the enjoyment of staff and students alike!

Adam also presented an improvisation workshop with the instrumental students and told us how improvising changed his life as a musician. We did a jam session in C blues and everyone improvised a solo.

He started and finished the day by working with our Concert Band and Supergroup, helping them focus on the sound they were making as a group.

Bollywood Dancing

As part of Arts Week, the Year 7s were treated to a Bollywood Dancing Session, getting the students up and moving and having a ball with Francesca McMillan from Fusion Beats. Lunchtime saw a multitude of students letting loose with a Just Dance party showing off their many groovy moves while forging and cementing their friendships.

Champagnat’s Got Talent

Champagnat’s Got Talent was a creative initiative put together by the Arts Leaders and teachers to promote the Arts, entertain, and give an opportunity for students so showcase their talents in a variety of ways.

The talent show was held in the Quad on Friday 27 May, marking the culmination of Arts Week. With the dreary weather, it was an exciting spectacle and entertained a large crowd. Many staff and students showed up to support their friends, houses and homerooms.

Some of the amazing acts included Irish dancing, Guitar Hero, and dancing. In the end the Cup of Fame Trophy was awarded to Fourviere B and H, who showed their House Spirit through a fun mash up dance.

Congratulations also to Josh Porter and Imogen Byrne who wowed the judges in 2nd and 3rd place respectively.

Dance and Drama

The Year 10, 11 and 12 Dance and Drama classes have been visiting many different shows from the Adelaide Festival recently. The Picture of Dorian Grey was a standout piece of theatre as the performance integrated incredibly new multimedia techniques. The performance Manifesto was memorable for dance students, where the ‘Stephanie Lake Contemporary Dance Company’ performed with nine full drum kits.

In Week 6, Year 11 and 12 Dance students will be performing some exquisite pieces on Thursday night for their major assessment. Please come along and support our amazing dancers from 7pm.

On Tuesday in Week 7, Year 10 and 11 Drama will be performing three plays. The Year 10’s are performing two plays by Alan Haehnel called Offerings and A Simple Task. The Year 11 Drama class is performing BOX by Lindsay Price. The three plays have a cardboard box at the centre of the plot, with themes of identity and acceptance.

Music

Our Winter Cabaret evening, coming up on Wednesday 29 June, will feature performances from the Year 10, 11 and 12 Music classes, along with our various CEA ensembles. In Cabaret style seating, the audience can bring their own supper, relax and listen to our music students as they round out the semester with this winter themed performance evening.

Visual Arts and Photography

The Year 10 Visual Arts students have just finished another colourful mural which has been installed in the Visual Arts locker corridor. This mural brightens up the area that leads to the art room, creating an uplifting view!

In Photography, Old Scholar Kristy Allison (Year 12 2021) and current Year 11 student, Francesca Vizzari were placed in the Top 30 for their traditional Black + White 35mm images for the Ilford 2020/2021 Student Photography – International Competition. It is an amazing achievement for these students to be classified in the top 30 student entries worldwide!

Design

Students in Year 11 have recently been working on poster designs and two have been selected as finalists in the 2022 SA Refugee Week Youth Poster Awards Exhibition. These students are Tori Muller and Lilly Makai. The 2022 Poster Exhibition will be officially launched on Wednesday 22 June in the Children’s ArtSpace Gallery at the Adelaide Festival Centre. Fingers crossed that our talented Design students will win a prize!
