To our Sacred Heart Community

Marcellin Hearts Ensembles Music Night

On 20 October, our Music ensembles came together to perform to parents and friends at our end of year Music Night. This night was the opportunity to showcase the repertoire that students had been learning this semester and the students looked splendid in their performance blacks, with a splash of red.

Thank you to our ensemble directors, who have worked across the year with the students who always strive for greatness – Neil Christopher, Rachel Coppen, Zac Curtis and Brayden Leske and music teachers, Bianca Baulis, Samara Churchett and Robyn Brookes.

We also farewelled the Year 12 students and thanked them for their contribution to the music department over their time at Sacred Heart College. We are grateful for their talents and passion and we wish them every success in their future endeavours.

Back to Paringa – Celebrating 125 Years

On Sunday 6 November, our talented music students, including the Guitar Band, Guitar Rock Band, Studio Band, Jazz Band and Show Band, took to the stage for Sacred Heart College’s 125th Anniversary Celebration, Back to Paringa.

Students demonstrated a high level of professionalism and school spirit, supporting each other, socialising with families, friends and Old Collegians, and enjoying the beautiful sunshine. Students also enjoyed the food, of course!

They were joined in the afternoon by Old Scholar, Alice Haddy (SHC ’13) who performed solo as a vocalist with acoustic guitar – it’s always wonderful to see our old collegian music family returning to our school, and to see that a love of music is still alive and well in their hearts.

A special mention goes to Year 12 student, Grace Durrans for her beautiful accompaniment and leadership of the music during the morning’s commemorative Mass. The event also gave guests the opportunity to farewell Principal of 10 years, Steve Byrne, who has been appointed to Cardijn College next year. So Long, Farewell, Steve!

Year 12 Art, Design and Photography Exhibition

The Year 12 Exhibition opening night was a great success! On 3 November, we had a large number of parents and friends attend to view the works, mingle and chat! There were so many beautiful and creative Art, Design and Photography pieces that were well worth being celebrated, and the written statements revealed personal motivations about each student that allowed us to get to know them in depth.

Principal, Steve Byrne opened the night and chose the winners for two new awards; the Principal’s Choice Award (including a $50 voucher), one for Art and Design, and the other for Photography. The winners of these awards were: Candice Wilson for her sculpture Blue and Jay Bogatec for his photos, The Curse of Blackwood.

Teachers, Ms Skye McVicar and Ms Sarah Melhuish are very proud of our graduating Art, Design and Photography students!

Year 10/11 Dance Night

On Wednesday 9 June, the Year 10 and Stage 1 Dance classes performed their end of semester concert. The Year 10 class worked in small groups to create their own choreographies in the form of short Dance Films. The students were responsible for their own theme, choreography, music, videoing and editing. Their final creative pieces explored darkness to light, manipulation and body issues. The class also performed two class dances, a Broadway Jazz and a Contemporary dance.

The Stage 1 class presented their individual student choreographies, again exploring diverse topics such as friendship, the effects of anxiety and the different aspects of love. The pieces were across a range of genres including jazz, tap and contemporary. The Stage 1 class dances consisted of a Jazz dance inspired by an Elvis song and an emotive lyrical dance, choreographed by Adelaide dancer Maddy Macera, who works and performs with Restless Dance Theatre. The class was fortunate to have Maddy come and work with them earlier in the term. The night was a celebration of our talented dancers and, of course, their creativity and commitment to dance.

We would like to thank the SHC community (many of them students) who came to support the dancers. There was a lovely buzz and energy in the air! Congratulations to the dancers on an uplifting evening of Dance.

Year 10/11 Music Night

Last Thursday (10 November) saw the Year 10 and 11 Music students share in a culmination of practical work for Semester 2. The evening began with Year 10 students performing their rendition of Sonny Rollins’ ‘Sonnymoon for Two’ showing off some of their learnt Jazz ensemble and improvisation skills.

Throughout the show a number of students delivered outstanding solos and duets in front a supportive audience of students and families. Vocalists, Jasmine Eramiha, Piper Ackland, Marnie Mae Croney, Caitlin Bailey and Sandra Stone, sang their hearts out and blew us all away, while Liam Ragless’ full-metal vibes and Grace Durrans’ sultry sax gave us a sneak peak at what to expect in 2023 from our incredibly diverse and talented instrumental students.

Our final performance was from the Year 10/11 VET class, fresh off their recording debut at TAFE SA in Week 3. A punk-rock arrangement of Sacred Heart favourite, ‘Sub Tuum’ had audiences cheering and clapping along. Thank you to all the performing students.

Year 11 VET Music Industry Recording

In Week 3 the Music Industry students headed to Adelaide College of the Arts in Light Square to record four songs in their studio. Run by students in the Certificate IV and  Diploma of Music Industry Sound Production course, the morning was spent playing songs in a studio setting, giving the TAFE students their first experience in recording a live band.

Sacred Heart students were able to complete their Recording a Demo unit for their Music Industry studies, so it was a great collaboration of skills and learning.

In the afternoon we were treated to a performance of the Diploma Music Performance students at their weekly forum, which showcased two bands, and highlighted the technical students on live sound and lighting.

It is a great opportunity for our students and we thank Claudio and Ian from AC Arts for their time.

REPAT 80th Celebration

Our Marcellin Guitar Bands were invited to perform at the REPAT’s 80th Celebration Concert last Friday (11 November). It was a wonderful opportunity for them to perform in a community environment on a beautiful sunny day to an appreciative audience. Well done to all involved!
