The 2024 Sacred Heart College Careers Expo was a great success!

2024 Sacred Heart College Careers & Pathways Expo

Last night more than 50 companies from a range of industry, further education, tertiary and training providers were on display at the 2024 Sacred Heart College Careers and Pathways Expo. Students and their families had the opportunity to explore a broad range of different pathways, along with trying out some of the interactive displays on offer.

We thank the families and students that attended, and hope that the evening provided a wealth of information for our community.

To enable the Careers & Pathways team to continue to provide the very best information and resources for our community, we invite those that attended the Expo to complete a short feedback form here.

What’s next? – Erica Fordham (SHOC ’21)

Old scholar, Erica Fordham (SHOC ’21) is studying a Bachelor of Business (Hospitality Management) at the International College of Hotel Management. We invited Erica to answer a few questions about her pathways after school.

What year did you graduate?
I graduated SHC in 2021.

What are you studying (and where)?
I am currently studying a Bachelor ofBusiness (Hospitality Management) at the International College of Hotel Management (ICHM), which is located on Currie Street in the Adelaide CBD.

What has ICHM been like so far (describe your study and work experiences)?
Studying a Bachelor of Business at ICHM is a 3 year degree. Each year consists of 6 months of study and 6 months of paid placement out in industry. For my first placement, I was able to move to Melbourne and work at Park Hyatt Melbourne in Housekeeping. For my second placement, I worked on the Ghan and Indian Pacific as a Hospitality Attendant. These placements have given me the opportunity to put into practice the theory I have learnt at ICHM. Some of the subjects we study at ICHM are Wine Studies, Gastronomy, Marketing, Human Resources and Event Management.

What have you enjoyed most about your program?
ICHM fosters a tight knit community and I have made friendships that I will cherish forever. We are taught by lecturers who have extensive industry experience and whilst on placement, I have made connections in industry that are really valuable to my development.

What was a surprise for you coming out from school to a new area of study?
I always considered the three main universities in Adelaide when looking at a pathway after Year 12. It came as a bit of a surprise to me that you can gain a tertiary qualification from a university that is not one of these. I was surprised to realise that there is a high demand for qualified leaders in the industry and that studying at a smaller institution that is internationally recognised as one of the best hotel schools in the world is a valid option.

What do you hope to do once you graduate?
This degree gives you the opportunity to travel nationally and internationally and so I would love to
use my qualification to work overseas.

Some advice for current Year 12 students…
Be open minded to consider studying at a smaller institution and choose a degree that you love. The
rest will follow.

Key dates

Work experience update

  • Work Experience information

A quick word on Work Experience, it is a legal requirementthat prior to commencing Work Experience that students are inducted in the following areas:

    • Work Health and Safety Act 2012 SA
    • Children and Young People (Safety) Act 2017 SA
    • Sex Discrimination Act1984 SA, Equal Opportunity Act1984 SA
    • Child Safety (Prohibited Persons) Act 2016 SA

Adequate time (approximately 5 hours) should be allocated to cover these topics effectively and students need to demonstrate their understanding. This induction is done by the school and is consistent with our Duty of Care to ensure that no studentis placed where they may not be safe physically or psychologically.

In addition to this, the Workplace Learning and Agreement form must be signed by the student, work placement provider, parent/guardian (all arranged by the student) and finally the Principal or delegate (arranged by the school). The original Workplace Agreement form then becomes a legal contract which sets the school insurance cover in place and must be retained by the school.

The school must also provide a contact person who is responsible for each student for the duration of their placement.

Work or job trials are not sanctioned by SA Work Experience guidelines.

Please see the Sacred Heart College Work Experience Guidelines and Procedures.

Try a Trade Construction at Western Technical College (WTC) – Term 2 and Term 3

Our Year 10 students have almost completed their five sessions of Try a Trade Construction this term. They have explored and developed skills in bricklaying, carpentry, tiling, painting and obtained the White Card.

Next term, 42 students will be exploring their potential pathway through the Try a Trade days at WTC in Automotive, Barbering, Construction, Electrotechnology, Hair & Beauty, Metal Engineering and Plumbing.

Year 10 Immersion/Try a Trade Days

Term 2 has seen many students sign up for various Immersion days including Cookery, Early Childhood, Health Care, Female Try a Trade and PEER Try a Trade (plumbing, electrical, engineering).

Students who attend Immersion/Try a Trade days receive a certificate of attendance which qualifies as evidence of industry experience. This evidence is a requirement to receive the government subsidy available for some VET Certificate II and III courses.

Year 10 and 11 students – are you interested in studying a VET Certificate course in 2025?

Please keep an eye on your emails at the beginning of Term 3 for ‘2025 VET Expression of Interest’. This will be emailed to all students and parents/caregivers. Once you have submitted the expression of interest, an interview time will be set up in Term 3 for students to meet with Mrs Benedictson to discuss possible VET course options for 2025.
