Congratulations to our Year 12 VET student of the year, Ally Norman. Ally was recognised, along with all Sacred Heart VET students, earlier this month at the VET Assembly.

Summary of careers events: Year 10s and 11s interested in Medicine and Dentistry

On Wednesday 24 July, 70 Year 10 and 11 students chose to attend an information session for students interested in pathways toward medicine and dentistry. Term 3 is an opportune time to explore pathways at in the senior years as students begin to learn about the agency they can have over their SACE completion and ATAR.

Adolescents sit within the exploration stage of career development. Speaking with your child about your own work and experiences in industry, as well as introducing them to family and friends with different jobs, can engage their learning about work activities. Adults with part-time/casual jobs also get to experience the wide range of transferable skills such as teamwork, punctuality, communication and organisation that come with working.

If you would like more information about pathways into Medicine and Dentistry, we recommend you visit both the University of Adelaide and Flinders University websites, as well as the UCAT website and NIE website where you can sign up to the mailing list.

Careers in Accounting: Lunch & Learn

On Tuesday 20 August students interested in pathways into accounting and finance attended an accounting ‘lunch & learn’ session with guest speakers from PwC Australia and Tilbrook Rasheed. Students were given an insight into the pathways available within these two organisations, as well as work, travel and study opportunities in this industry.

ICHM Experience Day

On Thursday 5 September eight students took part in the International College of Hotel Management (ICHM) Experience Day. This involved an immersive experience of what a career in hotel management looks and feels like. Throughout the day the students walked to the Adelaide Oval’s Oval Hotel for a tour of the facilities and grounds, and were able to get a behind-the-scenes peek at the new rooms and suites, hospitality areas, bars, restaurant and concierge (as they were setting up for the Quarter Final!).

This was a fantastic opportunity for students to gain valuable industry insights into an industry area they might not know much about. Career Exploration in the middle and senior years of schooling from Year 9 through to Year 11 is invaluable and provides students with opportunities to experience career pathways they’ve often not thought of yet.

  • Work Experience

Some importamt information regarding Work Experience…

It is a legal requirement that prior to commencing Work Experience students are inducted in the following areas:

    • Work Health and Safety Act 2012 SA
    • Children and Young People (Safety) Act 2017 SA
    • Sex Discrimination Act 1984 SA, Equal Opportunity Act 1984 SA
    • Child Safety (Prohibited Persons) Act 2016 SA.

Adequate time (approximately 5 hours) should be allocated to cover these topics effectively and students need to demonstrate their understanding. This induction is done by the school and is consistent with our Duty of Care to ensure that no student is placed where they may not be safe physically or psychologically.

In addition to this, the Workplace Learning and Agreement form must be signed by the student, work placement provider, parent/guardian (all arranged by the student) and finally the principal or delegate (arranged by the school).

The original Workplace Agreement form then becomes a legal contract which sets the school insurance cover in place and must be retained by the school.

The school must also provide a contact person who is responsible for each student for the duration of their placement.

Work or job trials are not sanctioned by SA Work Experience guidelines.

Please see the Sacred Heart College Work Experience Guidelines and Procedures.
