From the Deputy Principal (Friday 11 February)

To our Sacred Heart Community

Marist Theme 2022 – ‘Known and Loved – Dignity for All’

The image for the 2022 Marist Theme is now prominently displayed in the quadrangles at both campuses. Inspired by images of African migrants who landed in Italy, miraculously surviving their escape into the sea, Margherita Gallucci’s “Our Lady of Loretto with the Refugees’ Cloak” is a tribute to all the people who suffer marginalisation, war, hunger, despair, escape from their land, loneliness and illness. Margherita does not intend for Mary or the child to portray royalty, but as a model of love and warmth towards others.

Small pieces of gold leaf are placed deliberately around Mary’s head and points of light float in the background. Gold leaf, in the tradition of Christian art, is a symbol of God’s light; the sacredness of life in each of us. As we look forward to the return of our Boarders and those in Years 9-11 back into the physical classroom, we are called to be loving, inclusive and understanding of each other.

Virtual Welcome Evenings (Week 2)

The campus Welcome Evenings were held virtually this week, presenting Sacred Heart College’s key staff, an overview of our Marist Ethos, teaching & learning expectations/provisions, and approaches to student well-being.

If you were unable to join the Google Meet, a recording has been made available to families:

It’s safe to say that 2022 has been the strangest beginning to a school year most of us have experienced, but there is much to celebrate. On Thursday evening we had the virtual Champagnat Parent Welcome Evening. Steve and I remarked to the parents in attendance how exceptional the students (particularly those who have been in attendance onsite) have been for the start to the year.

It’s not easy to start a new school and attempt to learn teachers’ and students’ names whilst faces are hidden behind masks, but our young people continue to inspire and demonstrate the resilience which is a key tenant of our Living & Learning Framework.

Our Year 12s have similarly impressed at Marcellin – with a strong sense of anticipation for the year ahead and gratitude that they have had the opportunity to start the year as normally as possible.

However, it is next week that staff and students alike are looking forward to. Whilst our 9s, 10s and 11s have been exceptional with undertaking learning from home these last two weeks, we are extremely excited to have them back face-to-face next week. Despite the uncertainty that prevails, we remain grateful for all that is good in our community – which we have in abundance!
