From the Deputy Principal (Friday 11 March)

To our Sacred Heart Community

Year 9 Rite Journey Calling Ceremony (Tuesday 8 March)

On Tuesday evening, our Year 9 students & families gathered for the Rite Journey Calling Ceremony at Angus Neill Reserve, Seacliff.

The evening was filled with deep reflection as students read gratitude letters to parents and caregivers before symbolically leaving their childhood behind. The Rite of Passage concluded with students throwing a shell or rock into the ocean, symbolic of their readiness to move forward and begin the journey into adulthood.

A very special occasion as students left affirmed by the support of their loved ones.

International Women’s Day #BreakTheBias (Tuesday 8 March)

Tuesday marked International Women’s Day (IWD), a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women.

At Sacred Heart College, we celebrated the day with IWD theme cookies to raise funds for Catherine House (supporting women experiencing homelessness in SA). At Champagnat, we also held a whole campus quiz in homerooms about influential women, with Montagne H taking out the grand prize.  At Marcellin, we decorated the Quad with images of women that have made a difference to our world throughout history.

“Imagine a gender equal world. A world free of bias, stereotypes and discrimination. A world that’s diverse, equitable, and inclusive. A world where difference is valued and celebrated. Together we can forge women’s equality. Collectively we can all #BreakTheBias.”

Adelaide Secondary Youth Leadership Conference (Friday 11 March)

Today our Year 11 students gathered with more than 400 other secondary school leaders both online and in person for the Adelaide Secondary Youth Leadership Conference facilitated by the Youth Leadership Academy of Australia.

Our students listened to stories from a cross section of leaders in our community including former Australian of the Year, Dr. James Muecke, Co-Founder of Taboo Period Products, Eloise Hall and Cystic Fibrosis Ambassador & friend of the College, Emma Money.

It was truly inspiring to hear diverse leadership experiences that I hope to implement in my leadership” – George Wilson

I learnt that age does not define one’s ability or determines their capacity to lead” – Manni Tierney

Temporary Relief Teachers (TRTs)

We are inviting Teachers who are motivated and passionate to join our Relief Teaching Team at Sacred Heart College. TRT opportunities are available across both campuses; Champagnat Campus (Year 7 – 9) & Marcellin Campus (Year 10 – 12).

Successful applicants must be currently registered as a Teacher in South Australia and hold a current Working With Children Check. It is a mandatory condition of employment for employees to be and remain vaccinated against COVID-19 or provide medical exemption to COVID-19 vaccination endorsed by the Chief Public Health Officer. If successful, we will ask for proof of immunisation accordingly for our records. Successful candidates will be expected to undergo our screening process.

There is no doubt that Week 6 has proven to be one of the more difficult weeks in recent College history. The tragedy that unfolded at the front of the Marcellin Campus has been a challenge for a number of members of the community – both staff and students – to work through. It may well remain so for some time.

However, from the tragedy came the reminder, once again, of what a privilege it is to belong to this community. The sense of Family Spirit, one of our core Marist characteristics, was palpable; to see staff and students band together in solidarity was quite inspiring, notwithstanding the very sombre mood that has permeated for much of the week.

We will continue to provide support over coming days and weeks. At the beginning of next week, we have a counsellor provided by SAPOL attending onsite who is an expert in counselling people who have experienced road trauma. If you think your child might require this support, can I please encourage you to reach out? We will ensure it occurs.

I hope that the long weekend provides some time to rest and recuperate – a significant number of students have experienced COVID-related interruptions to their 2022 school year, and so the extra day to rest might provide some welcome benefit as we move into the second half of the term.
