From the Deputy Principal (Friday 26 June)

To our Sacred Heart Community

Vinnie’s Winter Appeal

Yesterday, our Year 9 Leaders from Champagnat Campus organised “No Heater Day” on Thursday to raise awareness for those doing it tough this winter. Heating remained switched off for the duration for the school day and we saw an increase in students and staff wearing a  beanie or scarf in the classroom.

Each year, Sacred Heart College supports and promotes the Vinnies Winter Appeal, with “No Heater Day” being part of our efforts in 2020.  While enduring one day without heaters in the middle of a cold winter wasn’t all that pleasant, it was just one day, the reality of homelessness for many is greater than just one day. As a Marist school and community we continue to support those whose ‘everyday’ is far different from our own.

No Heater Day will occur at Marcellin Campus in Term 3.

Dance at Marcellin Campus

Last week our Dance students at Marcellin Campus performed their end of Semester pieces in the Brother Stephen Debourg Performing Arts Centre. Both performances showcased the outstanding skill and talent of our students, who have done a superb job adapting to the challenges Term 2 has brought!

Environment – Year 10 Dance
This piece was inspired by the devastating bushfires earlier in the year. We looked at the destruction it caused, but also, the regeneration and signs of new life that occurred weeks after, which brought a sense of hope. The students created short sequences that could express any part of the environment they wished. As our dance developed our world around us changed and the appreciation of our environment… the beaches, parks and forests, took on a new meaning.

Flight – Stage 1 & 2 Dance
This piece was inspired by a 1 minute choreography each dancer created, called ‘Who Am I?’ The dancers were initially asked to look at all the things in their life such as family, their culture, star signs, symbols, numbers and quotes. They found ways to express this through movement, taught each other sections and then we layered it to create a whole class dance.

Funky Friday Fundraiser

This term, our Year 11 Leaders have initiated a fundraising campaign to support our Marist communities in Fiji, India, Philippines and Sri Lanka, as well as raising awareness for adolescent mental health.

Funky scrunchies, socks and Hearts beanies are now available to order across both campuses as single items or bundled at a discounted price.  Students will be able to wear their funky socks, scrunchies or beanies on specific Fridays in Term 3.

Orders are to be placed by no later than Friday 24 July via https://events.humanitix.com/sacred-heart-college-funky-friday-fundraising

Orders will be processed and ready for collection in early Term 3. The Humanitix booking fee will be absorbed by the College and will directly support closing the education gap for Indigenous students.

With only one week remaining before the July holiday period, I take the opportunity to acknowledge and thank all those in our College community for all that has been achieved over the course of Semester 1.

It certainly has been a year like no other and I thank the staff and our learners for being agile, resilient, flexible and most importantly, supportive of one another.
