From the Principal (Thursday 12 May)

To our Sacred Heart Community

Catholic Education Week, May 9-15 2022

This week marked Catholic Education Week 2022, giving the chance to celebrate the excellent teaching and learning across Catholic schools in South Australia. We say ‘thank you’ to the dedicated, caring, hard-working staff and students who make Sacred Heart College and Catholic schools in SA so special!

“Thank you to all staff in our schools for keeping the focus on students, and on their learning, wellbeing and spiritual development to ensure excellence in Catholic Education. You and the many gifts that you bring are greatly admired and appreciated” – Dr Neil McGoran, Director, Catholic Education South Australia.

Commemorating ANZAC Day

In commemoration of ANZAC Day, Sacred Heart College students and staff honoured our ANZACs who have served, fought and fallen in war.

On the morning of ANZAC Day (Monday 25 April), ANZAC wreaths were laid at various dawn services by Year 12 College Captain, James Ganley and Tate Patterson (Brighton); Champagnat Campus Captains, Keeley Carey and Joseph Raphael (Hallett Cove); and Mission Leaders Grace Northam and Caitlin Bailey (Edwardstown), with Caitlin also singing the Australian National Anthem at Edwardstown.

As Term 2 commenced, at Marcellin, students and staff gathered on the Heart Lawn for a Liturgy on Wednesday 4 May to commemorate ANZAC Day. Year 12 students, Anton Tugai, Sasha Karaganova and Adrian Niculescu represented the Sacred Heart College Army Cadet Unit and Principal, Steve Byrne reflected on Old Scholar, William (Bill) Denny AM’s (SHC ’64) significant contribution to Army, Public Service and the Board of Reconciliation.

The ceremony acknowledged those men and women who served their country and prayed for those who never returned. In the tradition of St Marcellin Champagnat, names of the Sacred Heart College Honour Roll were placed inside the Marist Heart, followed by the message as he farewelled the brothers – “I leave you in the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary”.

On Thursday morning, Champagnat Campus gathered online for an ANZAC Day Ceremony via Google Meet. Deputy Principal, Daniel Head, addressed staff and students, focusing on the contribution of Sacred Heart Old Scholars to the Australian Defence Force, as well as the long-lasting effects of war on ex-servicemen and women, making links with our 2022 Marist theme, ‘Known and Loved; Dignity for All’. The Ode of Remembrance was read by Champagnat Army Cadets, Rhys James (Year 8) and Lincoln Manning (Year 9), of 431 Army Cadet Unit – Sacred Heart College. Corporal James and Lance Corporal Manning, also lowered and raised the Aboriginal, Torres Strait Islander and Australian flags during the ceremony. This was followed by a beautiful rendition of the Australian National Anthem by Emily Devenport (Year 9).

We offer all those in our Hearts Community previously or currently impacted by war or national service support and strength.

“They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old;
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.”

2022 SHC v Immanuel Pre-Season Cup

Last week, Sacred Heart College hosted this year’s Pre-Season Cup against Immanuel College. The annual event saw a total of 30 female teams represent the College in Netball, Soccer, Football and Basketball. It was a great way to launch the 2022 Winter Sports Program and for the female athletes to showcase their sporting talents on the court and field. While the SHC teams delivered some impressive results across the four day event, it was the camaraderie and team spirit that was the real success. The students represented the College with pride and demonstrated the Marist Spirit through their support of one another and commitment to their team.

We acknowledge and thank all the people who made the event possible, including coaches, umpires, parents, teaching staff and the SHOC Football Club, as well as the many supporters who came out to cheer and encourage our female athletes. We congratulate all the players involved and wish them a successful Winter sports season ahead.

Please visit our 2022 Pre-Season Cup page for full results or refer to our next Sports News for full results and MVPs!

MSol Beach Clean-Up Excursion

On Wednesday morning, MSol (Marist Solidarity) students from Champagnat and Marcellin campuses met at Somerton Beach for a beach clean-up. Students put Catholic Social Teaching into action by caring ‘for our common home’ and were able to ‘to think globally and act locally’ as Marists.

Having endured the past five weeks of the federal election campaign, it is pleasing to note that it will conclude next week. There are a number of key issues put before us to consider and amongst them is ‘education’, despite there being very little emphasis being placed on it in this election?

The National Catholic Education Commission (NCEC) has sought responses to key policy matters in relation to Catholic Education priorities and they are summarised on this Report Card. The hope would be that all families in Catholic schools consider these areas when casting their vote.

Wishing you all well as we launch into the winter sports program!
