From the Principal (Friday 19 November)

To our Sacred Heart Community

Orientation Day

Over 700 students participated in the 2022 Orientation Day activities across the College today! Young Year 6 students were welcomed to the College at Champagnat, next year’s Year 10 students were welcomed at Marcellin along with new Boarding students and students joining us from other schools across the various year levels. I think it is fair to describe the ‘vibe’ as nervous excitement!

St Vincent de Paul Society “Vinnies Christmas Appeal”

Volunteers from the St Vincent de Paul Society visited this week to collect Christmas Hampers put together by the staff and students at Marcellin. The response from the Hearts community was amazing and will benefit a number of families, especially children, at Christmas time this year. A big thank you to Carol House for her work again on the Vinnies Christmas Appeal.

Year 10 Leadership Activity

This week, all Year 10’s were privileged to meet Emmah Money and hear her incredible story. Emmah lives with Cystic Fibrosis and her story is one of overcoming continual adversity, daily health implications and living a life that many doctors said would not be possible. A mother of two beautiful children, model, author and CF ambassador, Emmah is certainly living a full and rich life, making a difference wherever she goes. With a shared BBQ lunch in Walter Park that followed, many of our Year 10’s took the opportunity to meet Emmah and thank her for sharing an amazing story.

The Year 10 leadership team should be congratulated on their collaborative efforts in planning and executing a fantastic Pastoral Care session. And a big thanks to all Year 10’s who made a donation at the shared lunch, raising $279, which has been forwarded to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.

Marist Incorporation

Next year the Marist Brothers will celebrate 150 years in education in Australia. I want to update you of an important evolution in the Marist Brothers’ education ministry.

The Marist Brothers, who own Sacred Heart College and 12 other Colleges across Australia, in collaboration with the Marist Association of Saint Marcellin Champagnat, have been working with Marist Schools Australia to formalise and further strengthen school governance arrangements for Marist Colleges. This process has involved close collaboration over many months with the various State and Territory school education Regulators.

The work has culminated this year with the decision by the Marist Brothers’ Provincial Council to incorporate Marist Schools Australia, which has provided support to the Province in the governance and management of the Marist Colleges for the past decade. From 1 January 2022, all Colleges, including this one, will operate under Marist Schools Australia Limited, a not for profit company. The Marist Brothers will continue to be closely involved as members of the Company.

For you and all at Sacred Heart College, there will be little noticeable difference and no difference in the day-to-day operation of the College. The terms under which your child was enrolled are not changing but your enrolment contract will, from 1 January 2022, be with Marist Schools Australia Limited by virtue of your child coming to school next year.

The creation of Marist Schools Australia Limited is a very positive step forward that will ensure the Marist mission in education in Australia continues with renewed energy and supported by a strengthened governance that reflects modern education.

Curriculum Extension Activities Nominations 2022

Sacred Heart College offers a broad Curriculum Extension Activities Program giving our students the opportunity to participate in a range of sports, music and clubs. Participation in these activities provides a great opportunity for students to be more connected to the College, whilst pursuing a passion or learning a new skill. It also provides teachers and parents/caregivers to form partnerships in the education of our students.

Nominations for sports, music & clubs are now open and must be completed Tuesday 30 November, any late nominations may not guarantee placement in a team. Online Nominations are to be submitted via the College website (https://www.shc.sa.edu.au/learning/co-curricular/) and students are encouraged to read the Sports Handbook & Music Handbook before making their nomination. Families received correspondence regarding Online Nominations on Monday afternoon.

Year 12 Graduation Ceremony (Friday 26 November)

In light of yesterday afternoon’s announcement that all patrons who attend the Adelaide Convention Centre will need to be double vaccinated, the Year 12 Graduation Ceremony has been moved to the Br. Joseph McAteer Centre. The event will still take place on Friday 26 November, 5pm for 5.30pm start, and conclude at approximately 7.30pm.

Correspondence has been sent to Year 12 families regarding the Graduation Ceremony earlier today. Should you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact Kathryn Mortlock at the College (kathrynmortlock@shc.sa.edu.au)

So, as is typical of life at Sacred Heart there is plenty going on! It will be interesting, and probably challenging, to work our way through the opening of South Australia’s borders. Rest assured we will do our best to keep you informed of any developments and to try and maintain a sense of normalcy through the conclusion of the school year.

Wishing you wellness!
