Year 9 Rite Journey Outreach Projects

The theme for the Rite Journey in Term 4 is ‘purpose’.  Students have been considering the following questions:‘What do I have to give?’ and ‘What is my purpose?’ Each Year 9 class has chosen an outreach activity that puts others at the centre, rather than themselves.  Activities included:

  • Decorating Christmas themed biscuits and writing messages of welcome to new South Australians to be donated to Vinnies Refugee and Asylum Seeker Service
  • Cooking items for a Bake Sale with the proceeds going to Movember and Beyond Blue
  • Making and selling gingerbread using donated ingredients with the opportunity to write a Christmas card for a Hutt Street Centre client
  • Visiting Minda and working with the EnviroCare Group, assisting residents in the MyPath Program (pottery, painting, cooking) and gifting the residents with Christmas cards and decorations
  • Writing affirmation cards to give to Sacred Heart College staff members
  • Participating in clean ups in the local area
  • Awareness raising and fundraising for the Childhood Cancer Association

Leading with a Marist Heart

Earlier this week, our 2022 College Leaders gathered with the Cardijn College student leaders for the annual Marist Student Leadership Gathering. Cardijn and Sacred Heart were two of 12 Marist schools to participate in the online event and provided an opportunity to develop a greater understanding of Marist Leadership, form connections with other Marist leaders and identify an initiative for 2022.

Br Tony Leon’s session on Tuesday focused on “Leading with a Marist Heart”, an opportunity to explore servant leadership. Gabby shared the following reflection that will inspire her leadership as a Mission Captain in 2022:

“Jesus considered and treated others. He would focus on the people lingering in the shadows, the lonely, unhappy, disadvantaged, and forgotten. It showed me that this was a way to present the personality and actions of Jesus through his ministry in my ministry as a leader here at Sacred Heart College.

What a fantastic summary of our Marist Mission!

Curriculum Extension Activities Nominations 2022

Sacred Heart College offers a broad Curriculum Extension Activities Program giving our students the opportunity to participate in a range of sports, music and clubs. Participation in these activities provides a great opportunity for students to be more connected to the College, whilst pursuing a passion or learning a new skill. It also provides teachers and parents/caregivers to form partnerships in the education of our students.

Nominations for sports, music & clubs are now open and must be completed Tuesday 30 November, any late nominations may not guarantee placement in a team. Online Nominations are to be submitted via the College website (https://www.shc.sa.edu.au/learning/co-curricular/) and students are encouraged to read the Sports Handbook & Music Handbook before making their nomination. Families received correspondence regarding Online Nominations on Monday afternoon.

This evening is The Class of 2021 Graduation. Due to COVID restrictions at the Convention Centre we have had to move the event to the McAteer Centre on ‘The Main Oval’. Sadly, this restricts each graduate to having only 2 family members in attendance. Regardless, as we have managed over the past two years, all our significant events have been conducted with the appropriate decorum our students deserve and within the confines of our COVID Management Plans.

We will remember the Class of 2021 fondly and their initiatives to ensure that ‘inclusivity’ remains a focus for the students to come is significant. ‘A Home for All Hearts’ will live on.

We wish the graduates and soon to be Sacred Heart Old Collegians well into the next phase of their young adulthood – and as mentioned in my final address to the Class of 2021: Don’t get wet before it rains!!!
