Champagnat End of Year Awards Ceremony (Friday 3 December)

This morning, the Champagnat End of Year Awards Ceremony was held in the Marist Hall, Br McAteer Centre at Marcellin Campus. Awards ranging from academic achievement, the arts, sport, Christian Service and exemplary and outstanding contributions to the College were presented.

During this live-streamed event due to COVID restrictions we also conducted the student leadership handover ceremony. As the Campus Leaders of 2021 passed on the baton to the 2022 leaders one could not help but be impressed by the calibre of the students prepared to serve the Champagnat Campus in this capacity.

Finally, congratulations to Caitlin Bailey on being the Champagnat Award recipient for her extensive involvement in student leadership and social justice. Caitlin was recognised as the student who best typifies the Marist characteristics of our College.

Year 9 Rite of Passage (Thursday 2 December)

At last evening’s gathering, the Year 9 Class of 2021 were presented with their testimonials and participated in the concluding stage of their journey – ‘The Homecoming’.

The Homecoming Ceremony involved students being celebrated and honoured amongst teachers, parents/caregivers and mentors. The Ceremony included an exchange of heartfelt personal thoughts and is quite emotional for many students and their families. It was a wonderful event with a palpable Marist Family Spirit – despite the masks in the McAteer Centre and it was a bit ‘blowie’ on The Main!

We are very proud of our Rite Journey students, as they now move on from Champagnat to Marcellin Campus for 2022!

Staffing Changes for 2022

There seems to be a pattern at Sacred Heart that about every four or five years that a number of senior staff members move onto more senior roles and that a number of long serving staff move into retirement. 2021 is one of those years!

Senior Appointments

Kate Kilpatrick (Head of Champagnat) has been seconded to Mary MacKillop College for 2022 to assist the Principal. As a result the following exceptional educational leaders have been appointed by way of a very competitive internal process:

  • Kate Bawden – Head of Champagnat (formerly Champagnat Director of Teaching and Learning)
  • Nicholas Taylor – Director of Students (formerly Marcellin Head of House and Cricket/Football Coordinator)
  • Meagan Kozlowski – Director Teaching and Learning (formerly Champagnat Leader of Professional Practice)

We congratulate all our staff on their new appointments and especially our long serving staff who are moving into retirement.

The complete College staffing will be released early next year as we continue the staffing process over the next fortnight.

Premier’s Reading Challenge 2021

On Wednesday morning, our passionate readers were acknowledged for their outstanding efforts in the 2021 Premier’s Reading Challenge. The Challenge is a literacy engagement strategy that requires students to read 12 age appropriate books in a year. Students who complete the challenge receive an annual award.

There were 59 participants from Sacred Heart College this year:

  • 1 Reader for LIfe – 11 years
  • 3 Reader for life – 10 years
  • 11 Reader for life – 9 years
  • 20 Reader for life – 8 years
  • 20 medals
  • 4 first timers

Research tells us that students who read independently have greater reading comprehension, verbal fluency and general knowledge than those who do not. They become better readers, score higher on achievement tests in all subject areas, and have greater content knowledge than their non-reading peers.

In the words of Barack Obama….“Reading is important. If you know how to read, then the whole world opens up to you.” Books are like windows. By looking through them, we can see different views on humanity, current events, history, culture, and more.

Those who took part in the Premier’s Reading Challenge, have helped choose books from the selections Jacqui Cookes from Dymocks has bought in each term, to help build a library collection full of excitement, adventure, tears and laughter.  One of compassion, magic and fantasy worlds and one where students can learn about extraordinary people, true life stories and delve into the world in which they live to be informed global citizens with the knowledge to become activists for change in their future as they go out into the world with courageous hearts.
