Lent –  “For now and future generations”

On Tuesday morning, both campuses held pancake stalls to raise money for Project Compassion. The tradition of Shrove Tuesday dates back over 400 years, where those living at the time felt that prior to a period of fasting and sacrifice, pancakes were a good way to use up any milk, eggs and sugar, so it didn’t go to waste.

On Wednesday morning, approximately 2,000 staff and students across the College gathered online and participated in a short liturgy to recognise the beginning of Lent. Caritas Australia’s Project Compassion theme in 2022 is “For now and future generations”.

During this Lenten season, we are encouraged to make simple lifestyle changes and act for social and environmental justice. Our challenge is to respond with love and hope, now and for all future generations.

Outstanding Achievement – Adrian Niculescu (Year 11 Student)

Congratulations to Year 11 Student, Adrian Niculescu who has been awarded a $10,000 education scholarship from his involvement in the 2022 Teen Parliament program, an initiative by The Advertiser to ensure young people are heard.

Adrian has featured in The Advertiser several times over the last two weeks, sharing his big ideas on employment tax.  “Tax is stifling employment in South Australia. I propose that this tax be eliminated entirely. Since South Australia would be the only state to do so, our state would immediately experience an increase in start-ups and an inflow of established businesses expanding or relocating from the eastern and western seaboards”

Congratulations Adrian, an outstanding achievement!

Climate Action Statement

This week, we accepted the opportunity to join Mr Byrne on ABC Radio to discuss the college signing the SA Climate Action Statement. The statement is a list of climate action priorities, created by businesses, individuals and organisations and focuses on issues such as clean energy, smart land usage, protection of biodiversity and greenhouse Gas Neutrality of Business and Agriculture. Inside of these, is a list of important aspects, all of which can be uniquely implemented in schools/businesses.

Sacred Heart College is visibly passionate about the environment, as shown through various groups such as MSol and Game Changers. Many initiatives have and are being taken in both campuses, including indigenous gardens (Champagnat Campus), waste audits, compost/recycling bins and beach cleanups. This statement can be brought to life throughout many projects including bee hotels, bird houses and more Native plants in and around the school.

Overall we are very pleased with the progress our school is making, and are proud to know that the College has signed this statement and is doing their part to create a better future.

A few points to conclude:

  • It is with exuberant anticipation we recommence our College Summer Sport and Performing Arts programs this week!
  • Please discuss with your daughters and sons the importance of safe and appropriate conduct in public or whilst travelling to and from school – our uniform is well known!
  • We have been advised that the Skate Park on Oaklands Road is best avoided at present due to safety concerns

Finally, I share with you one of the points of reflection from this week’s Ash Wednesday Liturgy:

I’ll Always Be with You

“If ever there is a tomorrow when we’re not together, there is something you must always remember…

You are braver than you believe, stronger than you seem and smarter than you think,

But the most important thing is, even if we are apart, I’ll always be with you.”
