Marist Day 2022 – ‘Voice of the Courageous Heart’

On the last day of Term 3 (Friday 30 September), all staff and students across the College gathered at Marcellin Campus to celebrate Marist Day with the theme, ‘Voice of the Courageous Heart’. This was an important opportunity for cross-campus interaction and collaboration to celebrate our Marist Spirit and continue to grow as one College.

Students began the day in cross-campus homerooms where they participated in some Year 7-12 icebreaker (get-to-know-you) activities. A whole College Liturgy followed and was documented via illustrations by professional cartoonist and illustrator, Simon Kneebone. The Gospel reflection included a video where students symbolically placed words of kindness into the College’s Marist Heart.

Students then completed a Mission Walk in the local area and finished the day with a whole College Assembly where the Year 12 and Year 9 Student Leaders for 2023 were announced and the audience were treated to a comprehensive summary of Term 3.

The 2022 Marist Day appeal supported “Australian Marist Solidarity” in their efforts to provide education, resources, meals and other essential items to communities in the South East Asian area. Sacred Heart College continues to have a strong relationship with Marist communities in India, Sri Lanka, Fiji and the Philippines. Funds raised on Marist Day will be directed towards supporting current projects in these countries in particular. A total of $4,728 was raised and we thank all students and families for their generous donations.

Energy4Me STEM Workshop

On Tuesday, a select group of Year 12 students interested in the chemical engineering field had the pleasure of attending the 2022 SPE Asia & Pacific Oil and Gas Conference – a world renowned event. Students (Charlotte, Juan, Sasha, and Victoria) took part in the Energy4Me program, competing against other schools in simulated challenges, hearing from world industry leaders and professionals, and exploring the exciting new initiatives in creating sustainable energy usage in our world. It was a privilege to be invited to this event, which assisted our graduating students in directing their passions towards a bright future. Thank you to Old Scholar, Issy Ryles, who assisted with this event.

Teen vaping: An update for parents

Webinar for Parents
Monday, 14 November 2022
7.00 – 8.30pm (AEDT)
Cost: $25 plus GST

Vaping (the use of electronic cigarettes, e-cigarettes or ‘vapes’) continues to be an issue that attracts a great deal of attention as well as debate across the country. As a result, many parents have little or no experience with the issue as the devices simply weren’t around when they were in their teens.

This session will examine what we currently know about the use of e-cigarettes and vaping amongst Australian school-based young people. This is an area that is constantly changing and parents attempting to make sense of the information provided by both the ‘pro-vaping’ and ‘anti-vaping’ lobbies may find it extremely difficult to navigate. As we move towards the end of the school year parents are likely to need as much assistance as possible.

This event will be live-streamed but, for those unable to attend live, a recording of the event will also be made available for a period following the event’s conclusion.

To register for the event please click here.

As we move into my final term at Sacred Heart I do so with mixed emotions, as I am certain most of our Class of 2022 do as well. These first few weeks are critical for our Year 12 students as they move closer to concluding their formal schooling years.

The key message to all students in regard to Term 4 is to conclude the year well! The summer break is within sight but there remains much to be done. A family discussion and goal setting in a written format is a good place to start: what is it that I am trying to achieve this term such that I can conclude the year well?

Wishing every Sacred Heart student every success coming their way as a result of committing to their studies and involvements beyond the classroom!
