Year 12 Retreats – ‘Times Like These’

A big congratulations to the ‘Class of 2022’ for making this week’s Year 12 Retreats an unforgettable experience. With abundant levels of Family Spirit and Presence, our Year 12’s spent three days connecting with each other whilst exploring the theme “Loving ourselves to love others better”. The atmosphere at each retreat was simply amazing, which is reflective of the willingness of our Year 12’s to contribute openly and authentically. A big thanks to the staff and volunteers who guided our Year 12’s through their retreat.

“I’ve enjoyed the opportunity to experience something new and meet new people” – Jakob.

“It’s been a really rewarding experience and I have loved the opportunity to see my classmates in a different environment. I’ve realised we have a lot more in common than I realised” – Georgia.

“Retreat has created a space for me to get to know others on a deeper level, especially those I didn’t know very well” – Charlie.

“I’ve enjoyed the togetherness, especially through small group discussion, the concert and singing as one. It’s times like these that make the cohort feel more closely connected” – Mel.

Year 7 Camps

This week the Year 7 cohort attended their annual camp at various locations around the Fleurieu Peninsula. The camp activities, run by Beyond Limits, provides students with an opportunity to experience adventure activities, team building and social awareness activities, and is a great chance for the Year 7s to build on their emerging friendships with each other and the House staff.

Some of the activities included kayaking, bike riding, trangia stove cooking, beach activities and team initiative challenges to name a few. In the evenings students played games, held a house quiz, and also had a movie night, which by all accounts, was a lot of fun. Thank you to all of the staff who helped to run and organise the camp, as well as the staff who remained at the College and kept the ship afloat!

Operation Flinders – Tango 8

Ten Year 10 and 11 students took part in the Operation Flinders Foundation’s 8-day program, ‘Operation Flinders’ in the Flinders Ranges from 15-22 June.

The all-girls Sacred Heart team, named Tango 8, completed a 75km trek and experienced introductory rock climbing on the Via Ferrata, abseiling, bushcraft, basic radio communication, map reading and hiking, all of which aimed at challenging the girls and building self-confidence and leadership skills.

The team were led by Justin, who was supported by past-participant and now Peer Group Mentor, Zoe, who also celebrated her birthday whilst on Yankaninna. Robyn Sutherland and Katie Sandow attended as support staff.

On Tuesday night, the students spent their final evening on Yankaninna Station, having a meal by campfire and spending the night under the sky together. The ‘extraction ceremony’ was a joyful experience for the team, which involved presentation of Operation Flinders dog tags, the handover of the group mascot, McKevin, to Mackayla who will deliver him to the Nunga Room, and the presentation of the Boomerang Award to Kayla Fielding, who showed great resilience, team work, leadership and group care throughout the course of the exercise.

Congratulations Team Tango 8 – a group filled with leaders, champions and big smiles!

Champagnat Complex Approvals Complete!

After such a rich week of rescheduled Retreats and Camps, and our initial involvement in Operation Flinders – more great news!

The much anticipated Champagnat Complex approvals are now formalised and work will commence shortly on the project. The facility will comprise eight classrooms, connected by a covered courtyard to a double court gymnasium with a function space, staff area and other facilities. It will be constructed along the Western trainline boundary and connect directly onto the oval. This $15 Million addition to the Champagnat Campus will ensure that we have sufficient learning, sporting and communal spaces to truly celebrate all that is Sacred Heart!

I’m excited!
