To our Sacred Heart Community

Year 9 Rite Journey Camp

Over the past two and a half weeks, Year 9 students participating in the Rite Journey program have embarked on their final challenge activity, the Rite Journey Camp. The Camp involves a 3 day hike through the pristine Deep Creek Conservation Park along the Heysen Trail. Students spent Term 3 preparing their equipment, meal plans and tent groups, as well as participating in preparation walks through Belair National Park and Happy Valley Reservoir.

In total, students walked up to 30km in 3 days, and were required to show their teamwork, resilience and patience to get through the experience. The camp represents the final challenge, better known as ‘The Abyss’ within the Rite Journey program.

Thank you to all of the staff who supported this camp and contributed to its planning.

Year 11 Leadership Team host inaugural SHC Family Feed

“Whether it be parents, grandparents, friends or other special people in our lives, the Family Spirit which we share with our loved ones is like no other. It is through a foundation of family which we are fortunate enough to experience in our own homes that we channel into our Sacred Heart community to develop an even stronger bond amongst our cohort. So on behalf of all of us in this room, we say to our parents, grandparents and family members – those present here, and those unable to be here – thank you for developing courageous and grateful hearts in us.” – Conor Gluyas, Year 11 Leader and 2023 College Captain.

Thank you to the parents, grandparents and caregivers who joined our Year 11 students for the inaugural ‘SHC Family Feed’ on Wednesday morning, celebrating Family Spirit, and acknowledging with gratitude the sacrifices that our families make in providing opportunities for our students. We appreciate the support of our community in raising funds through this breakfast to the Smith Family and look forward to more opportunities to have parents and caregivers back on site.

Year 11 Geography Deep Creek Excursion

On Tuesday our Year 11 Geography class returned from a wintery, but beautiful, Fleurieu Peninsula. As part of their studies, students monitored the varied levels of flora and fauna biodiversity present within the ecosystems in Deep Creek Conservation Park and will use this evidence to analyse how well the natural resources in the park are managed in a summative field work report.

As usual, our students positively represented the College and connected with a part of the state that many of them have not been to before.

They monitored the impending wet weather in the lead up to the trip, thus being able to secure dorm accommodation at Willow Creek Farm was a blessing as opposed to the original plan of camping in the open. As the rain pelted down overnight, the combustion heater and dry beds were a welcome comfort.

A special thanks to Mick Boers, Kurtis Harrison and Adriana Cvorkov for ensuring the trip ran smoothly, and to Kathy Cilento for her assistance prior to the trip.

Game Changers – La Valla Leadership Camp

For the first time in the short history of the Game Changers program at Sacred Heart, our Year 10s travelled interstate to participate in the La Valla Leadership Camp. Held in Phillip Island, Victoria, the camp focused on further developing leadership capacity from a Marist perspective. This included ‘how to be an authentic leader’, the ‘art of listening’ and ‘rolling up the sleeves’.

A big thank you to their mentor, Liv Carver, for her work with our Year 10s this year, and to Ali Sampson, Kristy Allison and Matthew Laverty, for giving up their weekend to accompany the group to Victoria.

Year 10 2022 and Year 11 2023 Student Leadership

On Wednesday morning, our Year 10s gathered for portfolio and House Leader elections for 2023. It was pleasing to see another strong group of candidates present their visions for 2023. The outcome of the process will be announced soon.

Commencing with a Year 10 assembly in the DeBourg, we also took this opportunity to thank and congratulate the Year 10 Leaders for 2022, who under the guidance of David Threadgold from One and All Consulting, should be extremely proud of their individual growth, collaboration and contribution to the College this year.

‘Back to Paringa’ on Sunday will mark a significant point in time at the College. Events planned for earlier this year were postponed or cancelled due to COVID but it seems that even the unseasonal weather of this week will dissipate and we will be blessed with a sunny, warm day!

There are actually a few anniversaries occurring across the College this year:

  • Our quasquicentennial (125th) having been established in 1897 at Port Adelaide
  • The Marist Brothers are celebrating their sesquicentennial (150th) of opening their first school in Australia in Church Hill, The Rocks, Sydney
  • Paringa Hall is 140 years old having been completed in 1882
  • The College Chapel foundation stone was laid Sunday 24 September 1922, thus marking its centenary this year!
  • And finally, at year’s end I will conclude my 10 years of service as the 20th Sacred Heart College Principal.

I hope you can join us in the company of family and friends on Sunday to explore and enjoy the rich heritage and grounds of our fine Marist College!
