Hearts News – Friday 27 September 2024 (Week 10 Term 3)

Today we celebrated our Marist Spirit as one College community for our annual Marist Day 2024.

To our Sacred Heart College community

As we draw to the conclusion of Term 3, it’s fitting to pause and reflect on all that has been achieved. Term 3 is a fantastic term in schools; the teaching and learning program ramps up, the weather gets warmer and the days grow longer, and we celebrate pinnacle events in sport and music. We’ve also had the exciting announcement of our 2025 senior student leaders, and I extend my congratulations to those students who are recognised below. Their leadership will be vital as we continue on in our 128th year.

For our Year 12 students, the final weeks of study are upon you! I encourage you to make the most of the upcoming break: balance your well-deserved rest with focused preparation for your final assessments and take advantage of the opportunities that are available to you over this time. These last few weeks are a key moment in your school journey, and we wish you every success as you enter this critical phase.

To all of our students, from Year 7 through to 12, take time these holidays to recharge, reflect, and return ready for the final term of the year. On a personal note, I will be taking leave next term and so I thank you for all of the many interactions we have had so far this year and look forward to seeing you in 2025.

Daniel Head
Deputy Principal

Marist Day 2024

The concept of Marist Day was devised at the annual Marist Student Leaders gathering in 2020, and today, we gathered for the fourth consecutive year, celebrating our Marist Spirit and being present with each other, most importantly, connecting as one school community at Marcellin Campus. The joint Homeroom activities were well received and gave students in Years 7-12 an opportunity to engage with each other across the whole College.

The College liturgy centred around the Marist theme for 2024,’ First Light; Reveal the Spirit.’ This theme challenges us to find the spirit that lies within each of us and share it with others. Following the liturgy, students participated in a variety of carnival-like activities, along with fundraising efforts for the 2024 Immersion trips. Marist Day concluded with a whole College Assembly, which included the announcement of the Year 12 Student Leadership team for 2025, the debut of the Marist Brothers video, and a speech from our College Principal, Daniel Lynch.

Announcing our 2025 Marcellin Student Leadership team

This week saw the Year 12 Student Leadership team finalised for 2025. Thirty-three Year 12 leaders will oversee a range of portfolio and House leadership positions, and will work collaboratively to serve the community in their final year of school.

We congratulate the following students on being voted to lead Sacred Heart in 2025:

We give thanks to all students who took the time to prepare and nominate for a leadership position in 2025 – their courage and passion for the College has been evident right throughout the process.

Year 11s World’s Greatest Shave

A big congratulations to our Year 11 Student Leaders for successfully coordinating the World’s Greatest Shave fundraiser at Marcellin Campus today! Many students took part by spray painting or shaving their hair, while our Year 10 Student Leaders helped out with a BBQ. All proceeds will go to the Leukaemia Foundation, supporting research and care for those diagnosed with blood cancer and blood cancer-related illnesses.

Our goal is to raise $1,000, and you can contribute by clicking here. Thank you for your support!

Engaging with democracy at the 2024 SA Schools Constitutional Convention

On Friday of Week 8, two of our Stage 1 Legal Studies students attended the 2024 SA Schools Constitutional Convention at Parliament House. Year 11 students, Lola Stephens and Lucy Mullarvey joined students from across the State who came together to discuss and debate a new preamble for the Australian Constitution. Our students were fortunate to enhance their learning by seeing democracy in action. The topic was first introduced by Keynote speaker, Dr Joe McIntyre, Associate Professor of Law at the University of South Australia. Students learned about the history of the constitution, and developed a greater understanding of the importance of civics and citizenship.

Students then had the opportunity to collaborate with other students from various schools, analysing the merits of three options for a new preamble. This new preamble would essentially act as an introductory vision statement that provides an insight to Australia’s identity and our national beliefs. Following this, the students rejoined the parliamentary chamber and voted on their chosen preamble, deciding between a symbolic, practical or moderate preamble. Unsurprisingly, the symbolic preamble filled with values such as inclusivity, stewardship for the environment and respect for our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander heritage, gained majority support.

Students were then able to put their skills into practice in a parliamentary debate on the new preamble. Lola and Lucy did our College proud by presenting sophisticated perspectives in what became a passionate debate. A final vote followed the parliamentary debate in which the proposal to change the preamble was passed. We thank Lola and Lucy not only for their attendance, but also for the enthusiastic manner in which they engaged in the day.

Rite Journey class farewell their new friends at intergenerational lunch

After weeks spent exchanging letters (and crafternoons) with their Intergenerational Program penpals this term, the Year 9 Rite Journey class enjoyed a shared lunch at the West Adelaide Football Club to farewell their older friends.

The overall aims of this Intergenerational Program are an opportunity for residents and teenage students to come together to learn about each other’s lives. Together with Meals on Wheels, this project is beneficial for both age groups, and helps to foster relationships and promote social engagements between older people and young people. The aim is to bring people together through purposeful and mutually beneficial activities that promote a greater understanding and respect between generations, contributing to building more cohesive communities.

The students and older volunteers shared happy stories of their values, challenges, post-camp debriefs and spent a lovely time together, building positive and supportive relationships.

Year 9 STEM: Exploring space and reimagining our systems

Last Thursday, the Year 9 STEM class went on an excursion to the city, visiting the Australian Space Discovery Centre and the Museum of Discovery (MOD).

At the Australian Space Discovery Centre, their mission was to measure and record surface temperatures across Australia. The students incorporated satellite technology into their project, making key decisions throughout the design process. They determined what data to collect, what type of satellite to use, the intended orbit for their launch, and how to apply the collected data. It was great to see the students engage with the project and collaborate on innovative solutions.

The current exhibition at MOD is titled ‘Broken’, and explores how the world could change if we reimagined our systems. The students were challenged with the question, “If our old systems are broken, what should we build in their place?” They learned how to track environmental stress through tree canopy growth data and played Terra Nil, a strategy game where they reconstructed ecosystems piece by piece from barren wasteland. Some had more success than others!

The students demonstrated exceptional engagement with all activities, as well as outstanding behavior and respect throughout the day.

Game Changers La Valla Leadership Camp

Last week nine students from the Year 10 Game Changers group travelled to Melbourne to take part in the La Valla Leadership Camp. The program took place at the Edmund Rice Centre Amberley, situated in natural bushland along the Yarra River, which set the scene for a grounding and reflective experience.

Joined by 50 other students from Marist schools across Victoria and Western Australia, the Game Changers students engaged in an enriching three-day program from Wednesday to Friday centred around leadership and ministry. Through deep discussions and engaging workshops, they explored the core themes of Marian leadership, self-identity, and the essence of servanthood. These sessions encouraged the students to reflect on how they could model themselves after Mary, exemplifying her qualities of kindness, compassion, and humble leadership. A key highlight was the opportunity for each school group to plan ministry initiatives for 2025, brainstorming ways to put their new understanding of Marian leadership into meaningful action.

Beyond the structured workshops, students enjoyed exploring the grounds of the property, bonding over board games, a trivia night, team building games and connecting with Marist peers from other schools.  The La Valla Leadership Camp was an excellent opportunity for students to unlock their potential as leaders, deepen their passion for ministry, and immerse themselves in their Marist identity.

The La Valla Leadership Camp was an amazing eye-opening and unique experience. I enjoyed and cherished the moments to connect and get to know other like-minded Game Changers students from schools in WA and VIC, while connecting closer to myself and the Marist spirit and tradition. The key message of this camp for me was ‘Servant Leadership’ and how it’s not just about one leader leading, but about leading as servants to grow and flourish together as a group.

Arts News

Jesus Christ Superstar

On Wednesday, students involved in Year 9 Music, Drama Club, Choir as well as the student Arts Leaders had the opportunity to attend the Jesus Christ Superstar musical at Adelaide University starring Oliver John and Ben James. It was also a great opportunity to meet up with Performing Arts students from Marcellin Campus.

The famous rock opera is centered around the lead up to Jesus’ death, giving perspective on the betrayal by his disciple, Judas. Performed by Adelaide Uni’s own students, it was a truly memorable show that was enjoyed by all who attended. It has inspired many of our arts students to reflect on how they can bring the same level of energy and confidence to their roles in the 2025 Sacred Heart musical, The Wizard of Oz.

Music News

2024 ‘Spring Symphony’ Music Cabaret

Sacred Heart College hosted its first-ever Spring Symphony Music Cabaret last week, showcasing the talents of music students from years 7 to 12. It was a wonderful evening where our Champagnat and Marcellin campuses united to celebrate the power of music. The performances throughout the night provided an excellent balance of music, engaging the large audience. The highlight was the finale, featuring all students collaborating on an arrangement of ‘Some Nights.’ The feedback was overwhelmingly positive, and we’re already looking forward to the 2025 Music Cabaret!

Catholic Schools Music Festival Rehearsals and Performances

Last week, the annual Catholic Schools Music Festival took place at the Adelaide Festival Theatre. For the first time in a long time, five boys from Sacred Heart College: Andrew McKinnon (Year 12), Cameron Moore (Year 11), Kayne Seaman (Year 11), Brayden Reubenicht (Year 11), Ashton Wickers (Year 10) and Gerard Gregory (Year 9), were involved in the Boys Vocal Ensemble, which made up the Catholic Schools Festival Choir. This is a great achievement for these boys and a wonderful opportunity for them to showcase their musical talent and collaborate with other catholic schools. We also thank Kara Lee (Year 7) who did a wonderful job as compere at the Festival.

Sacred Heart also had the opportunity to perform as a Foyer Act on the evening of Thursday 26 September, with our Vocal Harmony (Champagnat), Super Band (Champagnat), Senior Vocal Ensemble (Marcellin) and Stage Band (Marcellin) performing their musical sets from the cabaret. This was another great opportunity to showcase the growing music program at Sacred Heart College at one of Adelaide’s greatest performing venues. Well done to all students and staff involved!

Pedal Prix 24-hour race meet

The Rural City of Murray Bridge recently welcomed the much-anticipated Australian Human Powered Vehicle (HPV) Super Series, drawing over 200 teams and thousands of enthusiastic spectators for the 24-hour event. The event showcased school teams eager to demonstrate their engineering prowess alongside professional squads vying for victory.

Among the participants, Sacred Heart College fielded three trikes: HeartAttack, HeartBurn, and BraveHeart, with students from Year 7 to Year 11 taking part. The race kicked off in ideal conditions, allowing riders to settle into longer shifts as they navigated the 1.7km track, known for its technical corners and long straight sections. This year, advances in technology pushed the trikes to higher speeds, adding an exciting challenge.

The infamous Bellotti Corner, dubbed ‘Crash Corner,’ saw several rollovers, but both HeartBurn and BraveHeart persevered through the night. Some young riders faced difficulties, especially those competing for the first time with HeartAttack taking a strategic six-hour rest to avoid the hazardous overnight conditions.

As the grand finale of the annual series, the Murray Bridge event highlighted the region’s strong connection to HPV racing and solidified its reputation as a competitive hub. The series encourages inclusivity, with categories for riders of all ages and abilities, and promotes environmental sustainability and physical fitness through the design and racing of these innovative, pedal-powered vehicles.

This unique competition not only challenges participants’ endurance and strategy but also fosters teamwork and technical skills, making it a truly inspiring event for all involved.

Final results for Sacred Heart College:

  • HeartAttack placed 34th in the S2 (middle school) category, completing 253 laps.
  • HeartBurn finished 28 th in the S2 (middle school) category, completing 328 laps.
  • BraveHeart  finished 25th, competing in the S3 (senior school) category, completing 426 laps.

A big thank you goes out to the parents/caregivers who supported their children throughout the event. It’s no small task to forgo the comfort of home to camp at the reserve or organise alternative accommodations, not to mention the dedication required to assist with rider changes and catering at all hours. Without your commitment, the event wouldn’t be the vibrant community success it continues to be.

Marcellin Campus Sport Presentations

Over the past two weeks, Marcellin Campus hosted its 2024 Sport Presentations, celebrating the dedication, hard work, and exceptional talent of our senior student athletes. The festivities kicked off with the Boys Football Presentations on Thursday, 19 September, followed by the Girls Sports Presentations on Tuesday, 24 September. While the Boys Sport Presentations did not go ahead, we also recognise a large number of these student athletes who received awards for their respective sports.

Both evenings were filled with excitement as a number of outstanding athletes were recognised for their efforts throughout the year. Awards presented included the prestigious Marist Award, honouring athletes who embody the Marist spirit and values of our community; and the Best & Fairest Award, recognising the top performers and team players in each sport.

These celebrations saw students, coaches and staff gather in the Br McAteer Function Centre to enjoy pizza and soft drinks, adding to the sense of community that makes these events so special. It was a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the incredible achievements of our athletes and reflect on the talent we are privileged to have at Sacred Heart College.

A heartfelt congratulations to all the award winners and nominees – your hard work and positive sportsmanship have been inspiring. We are immensely proud of all our teams and look forward to more successes in the seasons ahead!

Stableford Golf Team Championship

Congratulations to Year 12 Students Blake Wilby, Tom Dermody and Campbell Hossack for becoming the School Sport SA Team Stableford Golf Champions!

On Monday 23 September, Sacred Heart College had three teams compete in the competition at North Adelaide Golf Course. It turned out to be a great day for golf and our students made the most of their opportunities to display their skill and dedication to the sport.

The competition was tight with only 8 points separating 1st to 8th place. It remained close for the entirety of the day and it was great to see that two of the three teams managed to make it into the top 8. Blake, Tom and Campbell managed to step up under pressure and secure an overall 1 point victory for the day.

Well done to all students who participated in the competition and represented the Hearts community with pride!
