Last night’s Sacred Heart College 2024 Careers & Pathways Expo provided an informative, varied and engaging display of educational institutions, industry and businesses.
To our Sacred Heart College community
It is hard to believe that this edition of the Hearts News marks the end of Semester 1! Time flies when you’re having fun!
Earlier this week, Daniel Head (Deputy Principal), and myself met with Mark Turkington, Chair of the MSA Cyclic Inquiry, to review our interim report from the Inquiry process undertaken earlier this term. This process was a key part of the consultation required of us in formulating our next Strategic Plan (for launch in the new year). The initial feedback is absolutely fabulous, and Mark spoke often of the deep pride all members of our community hold in our College. I take this opportunity to offer my thanks to those involved in the small groups, and to those families who completed the surveys in advance of the Inquiry. This data is critical to us formulating a plan for the years ahead.
In addition, the College has appointed Detail Studios as our architects to oversee the development of our next Master Plan. Small group consultations sessions have commenced, including with our students, staff, Council, and so on. Naturally, whilst this Plan will consider our 7-12 enrolment, given the significant works undertaken at Champagnat Campus over the past decade, our focus now turns to Marcellin Campus. We hope that our next significant building project will occur around 2027 or 2028.
In recent weeks, families of children in Year 4 in our local Parish Primary Schools will have been advised that deadlines for application for enrolment into Year 7 (2027) at Sacred Heart College have been brought forward, and now close on Friday 20 September, 2024.
A reminder that our top three criteria for enrolment are siblings of current students, sons and daughters of old scholars and students in Year 4 from our Parish Primary Schools. If your child fits one of these criteria, the critical next step in enrolling into Sacred Heart College is meeting this new application deadline. Enrolment packs will be delivered to our Parish Primary Schools next week. There will, of course, be spots available for children who do not meet these three criteria, however the important next step is ensuring any application is received by the deadline of 20 September, 2024.
Finally, I take this opportunity to wish all members of the Hearts Family a restful Term 2 break as we look forward to a wonderful Term 3.
Daniel Lynch
Principal
2024 Careers & Pathways Expo
Last night more than 50 companies from a range of industry, further education, tertiary and training providers were on display at the 2024 Sacred Heart College Careers and Pathways Expo. Students and their families had the opportunity to explore a broad range of different pathways, along with trying out some of the interactive displays on offer.
We thank the families and students that attended, and hope that the evening provided a wealth of information for our community. To enable the Careers & Pathways team to continue to provide the very best information and resources for our community, we invite those that attended the Expo to complete a short feedback form here.
Class of 2024 celebrate their Year 12 Formal
The Year 12 ‘Midnight Sky’ themed Formal, held last Friday (21 June), was an opportunity for the ‘Class of 2024’ to come together and celebrate their achievements as a cohort so far. It was wonderful to see our students dressed up for the evening. Piper Ackland and Jasmine Eramiha are to be commended on their musical performance, which encouraged our Year 12 students to head onto the dance floor and continue celebrating the evening. A wonderful night was had by all!
We would like to acknowledge that events such as these do not occur without much preparation and planning, and take this opportunity to thank the staff who both coordinated the event, and supervised throughout the evening.

What does leadership mean to you?
Leadership to me is being at one with your community and understanding what they feel is missing, and then putting into action a plan to fix what is missing. What does being a Marist Leader mean to you?
To me, being a Marist Leader is always doing as Marcellin Champagnat strove to do – to ‘Do good quietly’.What Marist characteristic do you resonate with the most and why?
Family Spirit is the Marist Characteristic that resonates with me the most as I am a Boarder and living in the Boarding House is like having one big family. But it’s more than that; that’s also why Presence resonates with me because we have to be present in each others live because we are one family that sticks together no matter what. What do you hope to achieve as a Leader this year?
This year as Mission Captain I will strive to make the connection between the College community and the Brothers stronger. As well as this, fellow Mission Captain, Ella and I have put together a Plunge team for the Puddle Jumpers annual Plunge event made up of teachers and students, which we are looking forwrad to.A teacher that I admire at SHC is:
Mr Fernandez who is always up for a chat, always asks how the family is and he is a very genuine and caring person. The best thing about attending SHC is:

Champagnat Campus celebrates Feast of St Marcellin Champagnat
Champagnat Campus celebrated the Feast of St Marcellin Champagnat with a whole-campus Mass on Friday 7 June. During the celebration there was a focus on the silver jubilee of his sainthood, along with the Feast of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. The 28 Year 11 students who will represent Sacred Heart College on the Immersion trips to Fiji were also blessed by Fr Tom. These students follow in the footsteps of many old scholars who have attended the Immersion trips since 1995.
Following the Mass, students at Champagnat were treated to a video of ‘St Marcellin’ (Campus Captain, Archer) and Hannah (Campus Captain) who quizzed the cohort about our founder with their roving microphones – always a highlight for our students!
A shared lunch across the generations
Earlier this term, Nick Vasic’s Year 9 Rite Journey Class participated in a Games Day with their older friends as part of an intergenerational program through Meals on Wheels. Last Wednesday saw the culmination of this mentorship, with the students and their pen pals sharing a meal at West Adelaide Football Club. Having already met, the conversation flowed easily. Many an intergenerational bond was strengthened, many a morsel of wisdom was shared, and many a schnitzel was consumed.
The boys and men parted ways having created valuable links across the generations. Next term, Hannah Lally’s Year 9 Rite Journey class will take on the program and connect with a group of older women.
Year 9 Girls in STEM Conference
A group of Year 9 girls had the opportunity to attend the STEM Enrichment Conference 2024, hosted by Flinders University on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday last week. Each day of the conference focused on different areas of STEM; chemistry, computer science, physics, technology and engineering. The one common theme running throughout the conference was that STEM is everywhere and can be anything.
Over the course of the conference, we got to hear from many inspirational women in STEM as keynote speakers. They told us about their lives and careers, and gave us ideas on how we could branch out into a STEM career of our own. Some of the people we heard from were Dr Stefania Peracchi – a Nuclear Physicist, Tiahni Adamson – a wildlife conservation biologist, Prof. Amanda Ellis – a UN Ambassador, Dr Tania Barone – a Astrophysics postdoctoral researcher, Prof. Manjula Sharma and more. Each of them gave us different insights into different areas of STEM and science.
In addition to the keynote speakers, we had the opportunity to engage in multiple hands-on workshops. A highlight was the green chemistry workshop where we were able to use alginate to make a form of sustainable plastic. We also took on the role of hackers and had to complete a series of challenges. It was great to get an insight into the world of cyber security!
One of the more significant highlights from the conference was getting to network with inspirational people in STEM during a networking brunch. This allowed us to meet new people and make connections. We were given many pieces of good advice from these wonderful people, such as “Be brave and curious”, “Open yourself to new things”, “Just try to be the best that you can be”, and “If you believe that you are smart, you’ll stay that way”.
Overall, this week was a very enriching experience for the group of us, with new experiences, and we would all like to experience this again.

Geography students practise their Field Work skills
Despite the weather forecast being ominous, on Thursday 20 June, the Stage 2 Geography class participated in an excursion in the local area to practise their Field Work skills in preparation for their Individual Study.
Students completed Urban Field Work, in the form of talleys, traffic counts, housing classifications and land use maps. They also improved their Field Work skills in the natural environment by drawing field sketches, calculating long shore drift, measuring the width of the beach and assessing the impact of coastal management strategies, as well as the level of risk.
The class is an exuberant bunch, and they fully immersed themselves in the experience, developing the skills that they will require to complete their individual Field Work assignments in the coming weeks.
Game Changers Winter Warmers Night with McAuley’s ‘Mini Vinnies’
On Thursday evening of Week 8, Year 11 and 12 students from our Marist Game Changers Program ran a ‘Winter Warmers Night’ with Year 5 and 6 students from local Catholic primary school, McAuley Community School. The McAuley Community School students take part in a program called ‘Mini Vinnies’, established by the St Vincent de Paul Society, which empowers primary school aged students to raise awareness about homelessness and take action in the community. The Winter Warmers Night was an exciting evening filled with learning, collaboration, and strengthened connections between our Catholic school communities.
Our Game Changers began the night with a presentation to the Mini Vinnies, answering questions and sharing their experiences of senior school life, leadership and social justice, including Immersions, Vinnies Winter Sleepout, Soup Kitchens and fundraising. Throughout the night, Game Changers’ students led games and activities in small groups with the Mini Vinnies including brainstorming and a quiz about homelessness. The evening concluded with a liturgy and song, ‘Make a Little Difference,’ led by Micheal Ellul, APRIM of McAuley and former Sacred Heart College staff member.
The Winter Warmers Night was an excellent experience for our Game Changers students to strengthen their leadership skills and embody the Marist Characteristic of ‘Family Spirit’ by establishing warm and welcoming connections with their small groups. The students loved the opportunity to share their passion and pass on their own learnings and experiences of social justice to potentially inspire the next generation of Game Changers!
Science and Engineering Challenge @ Flinders Uni
A group of 28 Year 8 and 9 students from Sacred Heart College’s Champagnat Campus competed in the Science and Engineering Challenge at Flinders University on Thursday 13 June. The teams worked well together to solve complex problems including wind turbines, bridge building and coding, to name a few. The Sacred Heart team came 7th overall for the day and the students enjoyed the opportunity to compete against other South Australian high schools. Well done to all involved!
Arch D Podcasting Day
Our involvement with Arch D Radio continued on 7 June through participating in the annual Podcasting Leaders Day. Abi and Anneliese (Year 12), and Ethan and Frankie (Year 10) were joined by budding podcasters from various Catholic schools to engage in group challenges and skill sessions, gaining some valuable insights into designing, creating, editing and mastering the art of podcasting. The day concluded with a Q&A, featuring special guests from Triple M Laura “Loz” O’Callaghan and Tom Basso.
Arts News
Champagnat’s 90s Arts Showcase
On Wednesday 19 June, the St Joseph’s Centre at Champagnat Campus was transformed into a stage for our Year 7-9 students to present their Semester 1 learning across The Arts. It was great to see our students live by our College motto ‘Virtus ubique vincit’ (Courage Conquers All) as they put their learning and artistic talent on show for all to see! This included everything from 2D and 3D art works and design displays in the Function Centre, to beginner and experienced band and ensemble performances. Dance and Drama students had their first performance in front of a packed audience, learning that having a go is all it takes. The lifelong memories made on this night will surely be with the students and staff for the future.
Thank you to all staff, students and the wider community for their attendance and support. After speaking with the students today, it was clear that they all valued and were excited to share their experiences with their peers and couldn’t wait to tell us stories of ‘did you see when…’ or ‘could you tell when …’ or even ‘Ms, did you see me! I didn’t forget?’.
– Jacinta Vistoli – Head of Learning Area (Arts)
“The Arts night was a night filled with a range of different types of pieces and art. It showed the great talent in our school and it displayed the hard work and effort that all students went through to pull off such a great evening. Some highlights of mine were the super band because they were very talented and worked super hard – you could see by their performance! Another highlight for me were the Drama skits because it brought heaps of creativity to the show.”
– Luke Durrans – Arts Captain
“I liked the atmosphere – it was fun and inviting. It was great to see everyone come together. A highlight was my Drama skit because I love being onstage, and acting and performing in front of people!”
– Amalie Morrison – Year 7 Drama Club Member

90s Arts Showcase music collaboration
In collaboration with Champagnat’s 90s Arts Showcase on Wednesday 19 June, the Marcellin Senior Vocal Ensemble performed together with Champagnat’s Vocal Harmony in a combined musical performance of the song ‘He Lives In You’ from the Broadway Musical The Lion King. The students sang with energy and emotion; a great display of collaboration and family spirit between campuses. Well done to all the students who were involved.

Back-to-back champions – SHC claims Australian Marist Netball Carnival title for second year in a row
This year Sacred Heart College returned home as back-to-back Marist Netball Champions for the second year running! Congratualtions to the 11 students (and staff) who competed in the 27th Marist Netball Carnival hosted by St Patricks College in Dundas, NSW.
The team departed Adelaide on 16 June and after a big three days of competition, returned as the 2024 Marist Netball Champions! ”Perfection is not attainable, but if you chase perfection you can catch excellence” was our motto over the three day tournament. Excellence is certainly what this team demonstrated both on and off the court, claiming the title of “back to back” Marist Netball Champions in a display that was pretty close to perfection.
During the 12 minor rounds and two finals the team did not lose a quarter nor a game, scoring a total of 495 goals and keeping our opposition to 114. Despite the dominance on court, the most pleasing thing was seeing the players execute the Sacred Heart “way of playing” with quick ball movement and 1:1 defence, but doing so in a manner that earnt the respect and friendship of all competing teams. A true credit to all 11 players who were a connected and unified unit and when challenged especially during the early stages of the Grand Final, stepped up another level to win 35-15 against St John’s College, Woodlawn.
Congratulations to our Players of Day 1 and 2 – Sophie Warren and Chloe Evans respectively, and our 8 players selected in the following teams:
All Australian Team (10 players selected – six from Sacred Heart)
Chloe Evans, Mia Grant, Brooke Hayball, Rachel Hayball, Kelis Jackson-Martin and Sophie Warren.
Highly Recommended Team
Sage Aristidou and Tia Buckskin.
Thank you to Leanne Eichler (Coach), Sophie Agostino (Assistant Coach) and Laura Breeding (Manager) for supporting the girls on and off the court, as well as Vicki and Trish for scoring throughout the tournament.
Congratulations girls on representing Sacred Heart with such professionalism, skill and class. We know these wonderful memories and time spent together will hold us in good stead for the remainder of our netball season.
2024 Marist Netball Team (players)
Sage Aristidou, Tia Buckskin, Chloe Evans, Sophie Franz, Mia Grant, Brooke Hayball,Rachel Hayball, Kelis Jackson-Martin, Anna McAuley, Maddison Pavia-Amato, and Sophie Warren.
Festival of Racing – Pedal Prix Race 3
Race 3 of the Pedal Prix Series saw soem great racing over three days from Friday 14 June to Sunday 16 June. On Friday, Junior School (S1) teams and Community U13 (C4) took to the track. It was a very wet track that saw a half hour break in racing with all teams encouraged ‘to have a cup of tea’ until the water drained off the track and riders could once again see where they were going! Saturday saw all other Community teams (C5 – C7) battle it out, and Sunday all high school categories (S2 -S3) teams had their opportunity to race.
It was a cold start to the race with many windscreens fogged, reducing visibility. The sun finally warmed up the track and the atmosphere, which meant racing began in earnest with the S3 teams battling it out at the front. Pembroke School Centurian completed 206 laps with a best lap time of 1:33 at a cracking 52.062km/hr.
Below are the times achieved by out Sacred Heart teams:
BraveHeart – Seniors
27th place in Category S3 with 151 laps and a fastest lap speed of 1:37 mins and the top speed of 49.951km/hr. The leader in Category S2 was also from Pembroke School – Phoenix, completing 190 laps with a best lap time of 1:36 at a cracking 50.104km/hr.
HeartBurn (Year 9)
19th place with 127 laps and a fastest speed of 2:02 mins and the top speed of 39.756km/hr
HeartAttack (Year 7)
23rd place with 124 laps and a fastest speed of 2:00 mins and the top speed of 40.436km/hr
HeartBeat (Years 7-9)
28th place with 122 laps and a fastest lap time of 1:58 mins and the top speed of 40.960km/hr
A big thankyou to everyone who supported the riders on the day from the awesome Pit Crew, to those who saw a need and stepped up to help when positions needed filling. Many hands made for light work on the day and the students were buzzing with satisfaction on their achievements. if somewhat a little tired by the end. To the senior riders who came out and then headed home to study for exams in the final week of semester, we value your dedication. Thank you! Happy birthday to Daniel and Danielle who celebrated with a special treat of cupcakes specially baked by another team member; our community spirit in action.
We look forward to our next 8 hour race on Saturday 3 August at The Bend Motorsport Park, Tailem Bend.
SA School Teams Chess Zone Championships
The Sacred Heart College Chess team competed in the SA School Teams Chess Zone Championships on Tuesday this week at St Martin De Porres School. The team split into two teams, a Gold and Blue division and the boys and girls were able to take home both second and third place at the tournament! Ansh Moramganti took out the trophy for top player on the day, whilst Kyathi Chandrakani won the Good Sportsmanship Award. Overall it was a fantastic and successful day out for our Chess teams. Congratulations to all involved!
School Sport SA Cross Country State Championships
On Thursday 6 June, 38 athletes from Champagnat and five athletes from Marcellin travelled to Oakbank to compete in the annual State Cross Country Championships. This was one of our biggest teams entered in the competition and all runners were excited to be participating. The athletes raced distances of between 3000m and 6000m and luckily, the weather held out with perfect conditions.
With most events having a total of around 150 athletes, our Hearts team was successful with 17 athletes finishing in the top 50 for their individual events. All athletes raced well and to the best of their abilities and overall, the team were pleased with the results. The camaraderie and effort of our athletes was to be commended on the day and we look forward to watching these athletes race again next year!
