The transition from Middle Years to Senior Years is a major step in the life of each student. Having successfully completed Year 9, student embark on a three-year program designed to enable them to complete the requirements of the South Australian Certificate of Education (SACE). This certificate is most important as it will determine to a large extent the student's post school options for employment and further education.
In Year 10 students study both core subjects and elective subjects.
Our students study the Year 10 Australian Curriculum in the core learning areas of English, Mathematics, Science, History and Health and Physical Education. They also study some elective programs from the Australian Curriculum, and other elective programs that are locally developed subjects. Finally, students study a program that is provided by the South Australian Certificate of Education (SACE) known as the Personal Learning Plan (PLP).
The Australian Curriculum describes what young Australians should learn as they progress through schooling. It is the foundation for their future learning, growth and active participation in the Australian community. It sets out essential knowledge, understanding, skills and capabilities and provides a national standard for student achievement in core learning areas.
The Australian Curriculum has been designed to occupy 80% of the total teaching time available in schools. This allows Sacred Heart College Senior to consider our local context and focus areas such as Religious Education and the two mandated programs; Keeping Safe Child Protection Curriculum (delivered in the Pastoral Care program of lessons) and Made in the Image of God, Human Sexuality Education (delivered in Year 10 Religion Studies).
The Year 10 Subject Pattern
The Year 10 subject pattern is shown in the table below. All students complete three full year core subjects English, Mathematics, and Science. They also study three semester length core subjects History, Health & Physical Education, and Religion Studies.
The PLP subject is incorporated into Health & Physical Education and Religion Studies. The PLP assessment tasks are divided evenly between both subjects (two tasks in Health & Physical Education and two tasks in Religion Studies).
Finally, all students will select three semester length elective subjects from a wide range listed in the following pages.
|Full Year Core Subjects||Semester Length Core Subjects|
|English||Religion Studies (includes PLP)|
|Science||Health & Physical Education (includes PLP)|
|Semester Length Elective Subjects|
