To our Sacred Heart Community

As we have become accustomed, Term 3 saw yet another interruption to the winter sport season with another statewide COVID-19 lockdown in South Australia.  The resilience of our young sports people once again shone through and within a couple of weeks we were back up and running, with  girls sport heading straight into a semi-finals round and boys sport squeezing in two rounds prior to Intercol.  Week 5 saw yet another successful round of Intercol hosted by Sacred Heart to finish off the winter sports season for 2021.

Year 7 Girls Basketball

This year’s team started practices almost 6 weeks before competition started and put in a lot of hard work. We started off as a quiet and timid team and grew into a confident and strong group.  The team’s preparation showed when they dominated the first day of competition and came first in the Southern Region to secure a spot in the Finals Day. With only 7 players and some players carrying injuries, the team finished 3rd overall. The team showed a high level of skill and commitment to each other while having a lot of fun at the same time. I was extremely proud of the way the girls carried themselves and in the way they represented Sacred Heart College. Well done to Addison, Hannah, Kahlia, Amber, Imogen L, Imogen W and Dani.

Year 7 Boys Basketball

This year we have been overwhelmed by the high quality of our Year 7 Boys Basketball players throughout the season which made selecting a team tough. After making some tough decisions we ended up with a team of ten incredibly talented players who came together, trained hard and made us all very proud playing some fantastic basketball. After winning every other game in the qualifying round the boys unfortunately were narrowly defeated in their toughest game of the day by Pulteney Grammar meaning they did not progress to the final round of the competition. Well done Aaron, Bailey, Euston, Harvey, Hugh, Jacob, Jordan, Lucas, Othman and Xavier.

Year 7 Girls Football

  • SHC (5.4.34) def Wirreanda High School (1.4.10)
  • SHC (1.1.7) def by Tatachilla Lutheran College (8.7.56)

The Year 7 team played at home again for Round 2 of the Knockout Football competition. Coming off two strong victories in the previous games, the girls were keen to test themselves against more challenging opposition, and so it was with one victory and one defeat at the end of the day, seeing us exit the competition. The day began with a strong 24 point victory, with the girls showing grit and determination to come together after a long time apart, resisting a spirited Wirreanda. The game was extremely competitive and some missed shots for the opposition allowed SHC to put their foot down and control the game after halftime. Our second opponent, Tatachilla, proved to be much too strong on the day. The eventual margin of 49 points didn’t reflect the toil and effort put in by SHC, but it did demonstrate the hard work and cohesion needed in future years if this team is to go deeper into the competition. Well done to all players on a great series of games.

Year 7 Boys Football

  • SHC (14.10.95) def Rostrevor College (3.1.19)

The Year 7 Boys’ Knockout Football Team comfortably defeated the old rivals Rostrevor by 76 points at Thebarton Oval. With a goal in the opening minute, the boys never looked back, demonstrating a superior level of skill and teamwork to that of the opposition. Led by a dominant midfield and supported by an impenetrable defense, our forwards reaped the rewards piling on the goals in a dominant display. Best Players: Jesse Johns, Lachie Allen, Tim Cain, Angus Humpris, Archie Ryan. Goal Scorers: Johns 6, King 2, Starkey, Ryan, Vlok, McTaggart, Liebeknecht, Aulert 1.

Year 8/9 Boys Football

  • SHC (15.12.105) def Henley High School (1.5.11)

The 8-9 Boys Knockout Football team squared off against Henley yet again, as we have done for the vast majority of finals across the past fifteen years. Unfortunately for Henley, they came up against one of the strongest Hearts teams selected during that period, as evidenced by the 94 point drubbing that ensued after the siren sounded to commence proceedings. Our midfield dominated and continuously thrust the ball inside our attacking arc where we had goal kicking options aplenty. Our defense was supreme, conceding Henley’s only goal for the match deep inside the final quarter. Best Players: Lucas Camporeale (Malcolm Greenslade Medallist), Ned Atkinson, Mackenzie Darling, Ben Camporeale, Henry McKinnon, Jack Walters, Blake Wilby, Bill Thompson Goals: Ned Atkinson 5; Lucas Camporeale, Tom Dermody 3;  Luke Candy, Gus Downs, Damian Dunn, Flynn Whelan 1

Year 7 Girls Soccer

  • SHC (3) def Greenwith Primary School (2)
  • SHC (1) def by Grange Primary School (5)

This term the year 7 girls soccer team participated in the large school’s knockout competition. In the first round they confidently defeated three teams to progress to the quarter finals. They faced Greenwith and came away with a 3-2 win and played some great football. In the semi-final, the girls played against a strong Thomas Moore side where the score was a draw for most of the game. In the end they came out on top with a 4-3 win earning them a spot in the grand final which was very well deserved.

The grand final was played in week 9 at VALO Football Centre against Grange Primary School. The game was very tough for the girls as they played on a much bigger pitch than usual, but they rose to the challenge. They displayed their best overall performance as a team and created some exceptional plays but unfortunately Grange came out on top beating us 5-2. The girls had a great competition and watching them improve and learn to play as a team over a short amount of time was very rewarding. They should all be very proud of themselves for their efforts and finishing second which is a very big achievement.

Year 8/9 Girls Soccer

  • SHC (9) def Tenison Woods College (0)
  • SHC (0) def by Heathfield High School (1)

In beautiful spring sunshine, the Hearts girls played some top class football and were deserving winners against a very good Tenison Woods team that travelled all the way from Mount Gambier. After a tense start, Sacred Heart piled on the scoreboard pressure late in the first half after some fine defending from Rhiannon Zovi, Zara Daniels, Fiona Jenkinson and goalkeeper Isabella Cowley. The second half pressure was immense and the goals came in thick and fast. Goal scorers for Hearts were: Rosie Akot, Crystal Kao, Sophie Betterman, Monet Martinez Taliangis and Mia Perkins.

The second match for the day proved to be an arm wrestle of a contest. Both teams were solid in defense and opportunities were rare. The game went down to the wire with Heathfield scoring late in the first half. Unfortunately the Sacred Heart girls could not find the back of the net despite wave after wave of counter attacking football and Heathfield qualified for the next round. Overall it was an outstanding effort by the girls.

Year 10 Knockout Soccer

  • SHC (2) Def by Rostrevor (3)
  • SHC Def by Henley High School

In what was a hotly contested knockout semi final between the two Colleges we were narrowly defeated by the eventual tournament winners in Rostrevor. We then played off against Henley High School in the 3rd v 4th play off but again our opposition proved too strong and we finished off the day in 4th position. Congratulations to all the boys who represented the College with pride.

Year 10 Girls Netball Knockout

  • SHC (34) Def by Cabra (49)
  • SHC (47) Def By Blackwood (49)

Sacred Heart battled hard against Blackwood to try and secure the second spot in the finals series after losing to a strong Cabra team. Despite excellent shooting Sacred Heart couldn’t pull together 4 consistent quarters and we were unsuccessful in progressing in the Knock-Out competition.

Open Girls Knockout Soccer

The Open Girls First XI Soccer team consisted of players from both Marcellin and Champagnat. The team faced a double header against Cabra and Adelaide HS. After a close battle with Adelaide HS we faced a very strong Cabra College. Our girls played extremely well but could not match Cabra’s level of play and Cabra progressed through to finals day. Congratulations to the team and to head coach James Anfiteatro.
