Sports News (Friday 3 June)

To our Sacred Heart Community

For the first time since 2019 the Winter Sport Season has commenced as planned. With the global pandemic seemingly in the ‘rear view mirror’, a new optimism of an uninterrupted season is slowly becoming a reality – touch wood!

Once again we have record numbers of students participating across all codes and to date and results have been favourable. We look forward to seeing what unfolds throughout the remainder of Term 2 and 3, with many upcoming key events such as the 99th year of the Intercollegiate Round, as well as various knockout competitions.

A big thank you must go out to all coaches, volunteers and parents / guardians who step up each week to manage / coach Sacred Heart teams – without you, this would not be possible.

School Sport SA Teams Mountainbike Challenge

On Friday 6 May, 45 students from Years 7-10 ventured to Craigburn Farm Recreation Park for the annual School Sport SA Teams Mountainbike Challenge. Sacred Heart entered 14 teams total – 8 in the Year 7/8 Division and 4 in the Year 9/10 Division.

The day commenced with the Year 7/8 race along with some challenging weather conditions. However, all students got through unscathed and had a heap of fun along the way. In the afternoon the seniors, whilst a lot lower in numbers, put on an impressive display of athleticism. A special mention goes out to Andrew Tidswell, Fraser Oertel, Nelson Haese and Alexander Brooks who led the Year 9/10 age division for the entirety of the race however, finished 2nd only due to a time penalty.

Congratulations to all boys who participated in the event! Due to the incredible numbers of participants and our resounding success, Sacred Heart College took out 2nd in the Overall Champion Schools Trophy!

2022 Pre-Season Cup

From 4-7 April, Sacred Heart College hosted the 2022 Pre-Season Cup against Immanuel College. The annual event saw a total of 30 female teams represent the College in Netball, Soccer, Football and Basketball. It was a great way to launch the 2022 Winter Sports Program and for the female athletes to showcase their sporting talents on the court and field.

While the SHC teams delivered some impressive results across the four day event, it was the camaraderie and team spirit that was the real success. The students represented the College with pride and demonstrated the Marist Spirit through their support of one another and commitment to their team.

We acknowledge and thank all the people who made the event possible, including coaches, umpires, parents, teaching staff and the SHOC Football Club, as well as the many supporters who came out to cheer and encourage our female athletes. We congratulate all the players involved and wish them a successful Winter sports season ahead.

SHC Sailing Team

During the April school holidays, our Sailing team competed in the 2022 South Australian Schools Team Sailing Championships held at Goolwa Regatta Yacht Club. Competing against schools from around the state, both government and independent, our SHC team was a formidable opponent.

At the conclusion of the first round series and after two and half days of racing, SHC was placed 2nd of 16 teams. From the 4 teams left in the finals, SHC won its first semifinal and moved straight to the grand final where they later faced previous National and State champions, Westminster School. The grand final was locked 1-1 and came down to the last marker where SHC received an umpire penalty, leaving them behind in scores and 2nd overall in the Championship. The team represented the College with courage, family spirit and great sportsmanship.

Congratulations go to the SHC team – Alexi Wigglesworth (Captain), Austin Higgins, Darcy Higgins, Callum Veale, Max Lintl, Will Dallisson and Max Higley. Unfortunately Cailin Went and Joseph Perin were late exclusions due to isolation requirements!

This weekend, to acknowledge the Reconciliation Round, our Open teams will be proudly wearing the Sacred Heart Indigenous attire. The 2022 theme, “Be Brave. Make Change.” asks everyone to make change beginning with brave actions in their daily lives – where they live, work, play and socialise. To recognise and acknowledge this, our Sports Associations offer our annual ‘Reconciliation Round’ of sports fixtures to contribute to the national effort of making a significant change in mindset in Australia to achieve reconciliation. Reconciliation is ‘Everyone’s business.’
