Sports News (Thursday 1 September)

To our Sacred Heart Community

As the annual Intercollegiate Round concludes, so does the home and away Winter Sport Season. Across the board all teams have achieved great results whether it be finishing on top of their respective premiership tables or more importantly demonstrating profound growth in teamwork and sportspersonship.

99th Intercollegiate Round

On Wednesday 24 August the 99th Intercollegiate Round against Rostrevor College commenced in resounding fashion. In what was a tense and highly contested match, the Middle A Soccer team scored a goal in injury time to notch the first Hearts’ win of the week. From there, it was a mixed bag of results in soccer; the 2nd XI resulted in a draw and the 1st XI a narrow loss. That evening brought about the Squash and a comprehensive win for Rostrevor, and the highly coveted 1st V Basketball, in which we drew with Rostrevor College for the second time in three years.

For only the third time in the 99 years of Intercol, the Middle Table Tennis combatants came together on the Friday afternoon of Intercol week. With four teams of 10 students, 10 table tennis tables and countless family members and friends to spectate, the Champagnat Hall was certainly a hive of activity. Well done to all participants who yet again put on a fine display of sportsmanship and respect for their opposition. Rostrevor came away with the spoils in the Middle Bs and Hearts in the Middle Cs.

On Saturday the remaining Soccer and Australian Rules Football matches were held with majority of the honours in the Soccer realm going to Rostrevor and the Hearts claiming the majority of Football fixtures. The highly anticipated main event, the 1st XVIII Football, brought with it the theatre it deserved. Sacred Heart leaped out of the gates gaining ascendancy early and piling on immense scoreboard pressure. However, Rostrevor came home with a wet sail only to result in a draw, the first ever draw between our two sides in the 99 years of competition.

It was fantastic to see the students of both Colleges once again respecting the proud tradition, and each other, through the ongoing promotion of the motto ‘respect outweighs rivalry’. We now wait in anticipation for the next installment of the Intercollegiate, the centenary, to be hosted by Rostrevor College in 2023.

Lending a helping hand at Intercol

Year 9 student, Luca Egidio was chosen from amongst his classmates to flip the coin before the 9A Football game between Sacred Heart and Rostrevor College last Saturday for the 99th Intercollegiate. As well as being a huge football fan, Luca lives with disability and adds much to the diversity and richness of our Sacred Heart community. He loves being a part of the Sacred Heart community and the 9A footballers appreciated his Assistant Coach role for the day. Thank you to Luca’s Education Support Officer, Anton Vassallo for giving Luca the opportunity to be involved.

Squash SA High School Championships

On 17 August 2022, eight passionate squash combatants traveled to the ARC Campbelltown to compete in the annual SA High Schools Squash Championships. Jayden Scroop, Aussie Higgins, Sean Matthews-Coffey, Joey Mangeruca, Malachi Varcoe, Tyler Brett and Steven Conway competed against a record breaking 240 students across the U15 and Open Boys Competition.

All players left nothing in the tank and competed amazingly well against tough competition, representing Sacred Heart to an excellent standard. A special congratulations to Jaydon Scroop, winner of the Open Plate Competition; and to Malachi Varcoe, winner of the U15 Plate Competition. Thank you to John Prasad and  Dave Higgins for their coaching and assistance on the day.

Year 7/8 Boys Football Statewide Knockout Champions

Henley High is always a well-respected opponent when we face them. The Sacred Heart Year 7/8 Football team were coming off of a close win against Tenison Woods in the previous round, so this match-up loomed as yet another test of character and resilience. The boys stepped up from the first bounce winning the first couple of clearances, however unfortunately this wasn’t reflected on the scoreboard. With a focus on energy and intensity we were able to strike the first blow after a tight arm wrestle to start. At the end of the first quarter the Hearts were in front by 2 goals but we had a slight advantage with the wind so the next quarter was going to be difficult.

There were some super one-on-one efforts in the backline with Max Harris and Tim Cain saving the day on numerous occasions, which saw us get ahead by 4 goals at the main break. To the boys’ credit we refocused coming into the second half and the leadership group made sure the team didn’t get complacent. Another impressive start to the quarter saw Jesse Johns, Lachie Allen and the forward line make the most of their mismatched opponent and either score or create scores to get the team ahead by 6+ goals heading into the last quarter. Another strong start in the final term saw the team kick clear and maintain the lead until the end of the game.

All-in-all the boys showed great resilience to bounce back from lacklustre form heading into the Grand Final. Many thanks to every team member for buying into our high energy and high intensity game play to ultimately win the State title.

Girls Touch Football Champions

Year 7/8 Statewide Knockout State Champions
The 7/8 Girls Touch Football team recently competed in the State Finals and came out as State champions! The girls remained undefeated throughout all rounds of the competition and no school scored against the team all day! This ensured the team finished with the highest score percentage after the minor rounds.

Each game saw the girls grow more confident, which resulted in the team dominating their competition and finishing State Champions. Special thanks to coach, Graeme Stewart for his expertise and guidance of the girls. Congratulations girls on your State Championship!

Year 9/10 Girls Touch Football Knockout State Champions
The Year 9/10 Girls Touch Football team, comprising of students from Years 8 to 10 recently competed in the State Touch Football Finals after winning the minor rounds undefeated. Under the guidance of coach Nathan Armiento, the girls continued their winning streak, defeating all five teams in the final to take out the title of State Champions!

Congratulations girls for your dominant and consistent display of skills and team work to achieve the ultimate success.

Year 9/10 Boys Football Statewide Knockout State Champions

The Year 10A Football team returned to Thebarton Oval on Wednesday 17 August for a return bout against PAC in the Grand Final of the All School’s Year 9/10 State Knockout competition, four days after losing to the same opponent in the SAAS Competition Grand Final game by 10 points. Given the close margin on Saturday, and with both sides fielding largely the same personnel, another tight game was expected. This was certainly the case with our team holding a 6 point lead after both the 1st and 2nd quarters, easing out to a handy 15 point 3 quarter time lead, which was converted into a 27 point win.

With a useful breeze blowing towards the southern end, our effort to kick 5 goals into the wind in the 2nd and 4th quarters proved critical. The pressure applied to the opposition combined with constant hard running efforts overwhelmed our opponents the longer the game went, with superior ground level capability an important factor in winning this game.

With the successful completion of the 99th Intercollegiate Round and numerous finals matches played, we begin to conclude yet another fruitful Winter Season. As we head towards the Term 3 holidays we begin to set our sights firmly on the resumption of the Summer Season. With this, it would be important to remind students that your commitment to Term 1 Sport carries through to Term 4.

To the numerous parents, caregivers, College staff and Old Scholars who put their hand up to assist in the Sacred Heart College Sport Program – whether it be through coaching, managing or merely assisting on the sidelines, we are eternally grateful for your contribution. To all, enjoy a safe and happy break from the Winter sporting season and we look forward to the warmer months ahead and some non-contact sport!
