To our Sacred Heart Community

In what has come to feel like the ‘new norm’ the 2022 College Sport Season had a delayed start however, certainly hit the ground running in Week 5. Ringing true with the Marist Characteristic, ‘love of hard work’, a theme of resilience and perseverance has been the undertone of said challenging start to the year. The collective Sport Coordinators could not be more proud of the way in which our athletes have approached the season start, regardless of the hurdles which have been thrown at them. We are now in the midst of winter season preparations and look forward to another successful year.

In 2022 we offer a warm welcome to Samantha McLean (Champagnat Netball / Volleyball), Damien Cardone (Champagnat Football / Cricket) and Emily Coomans (Marcellin Netball / Basketball) to the Sacred Heart College Sport Coordinator team. Their contributions have already been significant.

Weekly Sports Wrap

It has been a very busy start to sport in 2022. As the Term 1 summer season draws to a close, the Champagnat and Marcellin  players are preparing for their fifth and final round of matches this weekend in Touch Football, Volleyball, Basketball, Badminton and Tennis. Despite encountering illnesses, injuries and team changes across the term, students have demonstrated resilience and a willingness to step up, support each other, and at times play additional games to fill team numbers each week. It’s been encouraging to witness the new Year 7 students engage in the Sport Program with enthusiasm and energy, while the older students have been warmly welcoming and supporting their new team mates.

SA Triathlon Championships

On Wednesday 2nd March a group of 29 Champagnat and Marcellin students traveled to West Lakes to compete in the SA School Sport triathlon championships. Unfortunately due to excessive storm water runoff into West Lakes, the Lake was determined unsafe to swim in, meaning the event was changed to a duathlon consisting of run leg, bike leg and finishing with another run leg. Due to the composition of the Marcellin teams, we had to withdraw the senior teams from the event. There were a number of strong results from the day, in particular from the ‘come and try’ events. Congratulations to all students who completed the course and to those who finished on the podium.

Golf Teams Stableford Competition

On Monday 21st March, 2 Sacred Heart teams competed in the Golf Teams Stableford Competition at North Adelaide Golf Course. Harry Hosking, Tom McKay and Blake Wilby proved to be a very successful combination winning the competition with a record stableford score of 115.  The Champagnat team, consisting of students Malachy Marshall, Harry Leaf-Milham and Brandon van den Berg also proved to be extremely competitive on the day finishing 5th overall on 99 points, only 16 points behind the Marcellin winners. Congratulations to all the boys on an outstanding result.

Intercol Cricket

Week 9 saw the last First XI game of the season with our annual Intercollegiate game against Rostrevor. Sacred Heart won the toss and batted first on a superbly presented wicket prepared by our groundsman, Paul Morgan. The home team were bowled out for 156 in the 60th over with Bodey Hosking being the top scorer with 49 runs. Sacred Heart were left to bowl 17 overs to end the day’s play, and with some tight opening bowling had Rostrevor at 2/20.

Day 2 started as well as it finished, with Sacred Heart bowlers on top, some brilliant fielding and Captain Chester Forster leading from behind the stumps. Sacred Heart managed to bowl Rostrevor out 10/108, with eventual MVP Harry Hosking taking 5/26.

Knockout Baseball

Sacred Heart again entered a team in the State Knockout Baseball competition. Unfortunately 2 schools were late withdrawals due to Covid/ isolation issues leaving us, Seaton and Marryatville in the competition. Our team had Seaton in the first game of the day, and being a specialist baseball school, we knew we were up against it. Unfortunately Seaton were able to make 2 runs in the first innings, but Jack Hutton battled on, on the pitcher’s mound not letting them score for the rest of the game. The boys were able to score late in the game, but went down 2-1.

In the second game, the team was up against a much younger team from Marryatville and was able to establish an early 8-3 lead. To their credit, the boys from Marryatville kept chipping away, with Sacred Heart being the eventual winners 8-7. The team was admirably coached by Mr Warren Wright.

We now narrow our focus to the ever looming, winter sport season. Preparations are well underway with the majority of teams having completed trials in recent weeks and season fixtures currently being finalised. It’s pleasing to see student nomination numbers continue to grow across all sports. We are also very excited to have engaged Darren Burgess from the Adelaide Crows to do some work with both our girls and boys football teams. Fixtures for winter sports will be sent out by the respective sport coordinators early next term.

Go Hearts!
