Arts News (Friday 1 April)

To our Sacred Heart Community

Music

After a delayed start to music ensembles this year, week 7 we finally had the opportunity to perform and get together. At both campuses on Sports Day, our drumline groups led out the House teams to the oval and new Year 7 student Gerard Gregory, and Year 11 student Ava Musarra sang the National Anthem.  Music continued throughout the day at Marcellin with many solo performers stepping up to the microphone, before a Year 12 rock band and our DJs played out the day.

Arts Weekend

Topping off a great day, the musicians continued with our Arts weekend on Friday night and all day Saturday. Each of our ensembles came along for some intensive rehearsal sessions led by our amazing ensemble directors. The Year 12 Arts leaders, Lachlan Durrans and Kaitlyn Rossi led the students in some getting to know you activities during the lunch break on Saturday, helping to build this incredible community of music students.

Thank you to the Music teachers for their hard work over the two days and to the Arts faculty and leadership for their support.

Visual Arts Excursion to the SACE Art Show

Year 11 and 12 students attended the SACE Art show on Wednesday 23 of March at Adelaide College of the Arts (TAFE).  We were able to have a tour of the Artist studio spaces, which was fantastic! The whole building seems to pulse with creativity and this was wonderful for the students to be privy to.

The SACE exhibition displayed beautiful personal pieces of Art and Design, including three works from our cohort; Niamh Breen, Paige Taylor and Olivia Power. Our students were also able to look through detailed folios, created alongside the making of each artwork or design piece. This showed the incredible depth in which personal and imaginative ideas can be explored and enhanced.

We were pleased to have Mr Byrne accompany us at the gallery.

Senior Drama Excursions

Seeing students bounding into the foyer of Her Majesty’s Theatre, overcome with excitement and in awe of the performance they had just seen, was by far the most rewarding and biggest highlight of the term – Sydney Theatre Company’s The Picture of Dorian Gray certainly did not disappoint. This Adelaide Festival production captured Oscar Wilde’s classic text with technical innovation and absolute brilliance, providing students the opportunity of seeing professional theatre at its finest.

Slingsby Theatre Company Visit

It was an absolute gift to have Slingsby Theatre Company’s Flying Squad come and perform for our students in the Debourg this term. Students from Years 9 to 12 were able to watch a self-devised show called This Tree is a Story (about everything, including you, told by me). The play was grounded in the theme of a tree and all of the actors weaved together beautiful individualised stories intertwined with this theme. Students later worked with Artistic Director, Andy Packer, in a workshop on shadow puppetry and storytelling, as well as composer, Quincy Grant, who worked with a small group of students interested in sound design and creating soundscapes for theatre. The incursion was a fantastic and creative experience for all involved.

Senior Dance Excursions

Over the last two weeks, the Stage 1 & 2 Dance class have been incredibly fortunate to be able to see some world class dance performances, as part of the Adelaide Festival. These include ‘The Rite of Spring’, ‘Wudjang’ by Bangarra and ‘Manifesto’ by Stephanie Lake Dance Company. All three were incredibly diverse programs and genres however, the brilliance of the professional dancers left us in awe. The last show ‘Manifesto’ showcased nine drummers on stage, accompanied by nine of Australia’s leading contemporary dancers. It was both powerful and gentle and the technical skill was simply inspiring. Our dancers now have a wonderful array of inspiration to go forward and create their own ‘masterpieces’ inspired by the creativity they saw on stage.

35mm Film Cameras Needed

Photography at Marcellin is one of the few courses in South Australia where high school students can still use original film cameras and develop the film themselves in a darkroom on campus. This is such a wonderful experience for our students to have! However, due to the popularity of this subject, we are in need of some more 35mm film cameras and lenses. If you have any of this equipment at home lying around and you would like to donate it to the school, the Photography department would be incredibly grateful. Even if you are interested in selling it to us, we would love to hear from you. Thank you so much in advance!

Song Writing Competition

In week 4, we launched our Marist songwriting competition. Students from both campuses are called to reflect on the 2022 Marist Theme – “KNOWN and LOVED – Dignity For All” and enter an original song.

Students must submit song lyrics and either chords &/or sheet music, along with a video recording. Entries will be judged by a panel of teachers and student leaders, looking at the connection between the words and the themes and the musicality of the overall piece. The winner will receive a $100 JB Hi-Fi voucher and may have the opportunity to perform and record their song.

We hope that students find their voice through the song writing medium and we look forward to hearing the entries.

Photography Competition

This week, we launched our Arts Week photography competition. Students from Champagnat campus are called to reflect on the 2022 Marist Theme – “KNOWN and LOVED – Dignity For All” and enter a photo capturing this theme.

Students must submit an original photo taken by themselves with a 50 word explaining the connection. Entries will be judged by a panel of teachers and student leaders, looking at the connection between the image and the themes and the design of the overall piece. The winner will receive a $100 JB Hi-Fi voucher and select entries will be displayed on campus.

We hope that students find their creativity through the photography medium and we look forward to seeing the entries.

Champagnat’s Got Talent

This week we launched the inaugural Champagnat’s Got Talent. Students from all Houses are called upon to tap into their creativity and ‘out of the box’ thinking to deliver 1-2 acts in week 4 next term. We are looking forward to seeing what our students and House Leaders come up with.
