Hearts News – Thursday 4 April 2024 (Week 10 Term 1)

On Holy Thursday and Good Friday, Sacred Heart students at Marcellin Campus performed Stations of the Cross, representing Jesus’ passion and death.

To our Sacred Heart College community

I trust that your celebration of Easter provided an opportunity to reflect on the values Jesus lived and died for; a timely reminder to reaffirm these values in our lives, whilst also being an opportunity to spend some quality time with loved ones.

Easter encourages us to reflect on our own struggles and challenges, fostering love, hope, compassion and action in today’s world.

As you will see in this edition of the Hearts News, on Holy Thursday (28 March), students and staff at Marcellin Campus gathered for a poignant reenactment of Stations of the Cross. On Good Friday, we welcomed members of the Brighton Catholic Parish and Hearts community to be part of the Stations of the Cross. I would like to thank all staff, students and visitors who took time to be a part of this significant part of our annual calendar. I would also like to thank the staff and students who so respectfully reenacted Jesus’ death and resurrection.

At the time of writing this, 24 students across Years 10-12, and three staff members are preparing to fly out to Italy tomorrow for the first Sacred Heart College Italian trip in a number of years. The group will visit Milan, Venice, Rome, Florence, Sorrento and the Vatican City, which is sure to generate many memories and stories for years to come! We wish the group well and look forward to hearing about their travels when they return on Friday, 19 April.

On behalf of the Sacred Heart College community, I’d like to wish all families well for the last week of term as the school holidays approach.

Daniel Lynch
Principal

Stations of the Cross

Stations of the Cross returned to Marcellin Campus on Holy Thursday and Good Friday, with a moving and spiritual reenactment of the passion and death of Jesus. A huge thank you to the musicians, readers and actors for giving up their precious time and talents to be present on Good Friday. One member of the community who witnessed the performance remarked, “My family and I were very moved by the way the kids performed with such dignity and respect”.

Thank you also to Majo Bogatec, Anita Wallace, Joel Ramirez and Gracie Northam for their time and efforts in preparing this year’s Stations of the Cross.

Holy Thursday Liturgy

Last week students at Champagnat commemorated Holy Thursday with a whole-campus liturgy. Students reflected on the events of Holy Week and Jesus’ words from the Gospel of John: “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”

Following the liturgy, an engaging quiz about Easter and Jesus’ life ensued. This quiz was run by the Year 9 Mission Leaders, Lavanya and Zoe, and featured special appearances from ‘Jesus’ and ‘Mary’, portrayed by Champagnat Campus Captains, Archer and Hannah.

A word or two from the Champagnat Literacy Coaches (pun intended!)

The Literacy Coaches at Champagnat Campus (pictured in order above) are Brigitta Ragg, Bianca Raslan, Jess De Silva and Joanne Gilmore. Our approach to the learning and teaching of literacy is informed by our combined experiences across states, school sectors, and hemispheres. Please see below for some of our thoughts on reading.

Literacy is the Key that Unlocks Learning – Reading Matters

We all know that reading matters. It is a fundamental skill for every aspect of life. You may even have read a few articles about the Reading Wars Grattan Institute. At Champagnat Campus we take reading seriously, but with research telling us that only 26% of young people read for pleasure, we know we might have quite the job on our hands to convince our students that reading is something they can and should do.

The shift from primary school to high school can lead to a disconnect in learning especially with regard to literacy skills – they are taught very differently. The ideal scenario is that all students hit the transition to high school ready to read for learning in all their new subjects. The reality is that reading is complex and many middle school students still have to master some aspects of the learning to read phase.

At Champagnat Campus this is just one of the areas we are trying to tackle. Over the course of Term 1 every student at Champagnat Campus has worked individually with one of the Literacy Coaches. We have  assessed their reading skills to develop an individual profile of what our students can already do so that we can plan for the next step in their reading development and learning design.

The results have been gold:

  • We know what the next steps are for each student in order to develop reading to learn strategies.
  • We have identified patterns and teachable moments across class level and year level.
  • We have heard students explain their attitude to reading and any concerns they may have.

Good readers do well at life as well as school. Reading changes the way our brains work, how we relate to and communicate with people, and how we understand the world. Reading is exercise for the brain and it’s time that we all upped our fitness. When was the last time you read a good book and talked about it at home?

Year 8 Medieval Day

Yesterday, Year 8 students participated in a range of activities planned to celebrate and enrich their Term 1 HASS unit of learning on Medieval Europe. The day consisted of three rotations where students participated in an interactive presentation on Medieval Weaponry and Armour led by FireBear Armoury, medieval games such as Kubb, and an art activity in which students created their very own medieval stained glass windows. The Year 8s thoroughly enjoyed each activity and the day was reported to be a success for all involved!

Shadow Minister for Education visits Champagnat Campus

On Tuesday 26 March, Hon. John Gardner MP, Shadow Minister for Education, Training and Skills, and Hon. Laura Henderson MLC, Shadow Assistant Minister to the Shadow Attorney-General, visited Champagnat Campus to meet with members of our student and staff leadership teams. As part of their visit to several schools in the area, they were eager to hear about Champagnat Campus. Campus Captains, Hannah and Archer, conducted a tour of our campus and provided insights into what it is like attending Sacred Heart College.

Arts News

Arts Week at Champagnat Campus

Champagnat students were thoroughly immersed in creativity and talent in celebration of Arts Week! This week, Year 7 students experienced the infectious rhythms of a Bollywood Dance Incursion and Year 8s and Music students enjoyed the inspiring workshops led by the legendary Adam Page. From SHC’s top 100 music in the quad, to lively Just Dance competitions and lunchtime rock art painting sessions, there was something for everyone. Homerooms offered mindful art meditations, 90s art quizzes, and film parody contests.

The Arts Showcase evening, scheduled for next term, promises an array of performances and exhibitions. It’s a week not to be missed!

Year 9s visit SACE Art Show

On Tuesday, 2 April, Year 9 Visual Arts students travelled to the city to view the 2024 SACE Art Show. They had the opportunity to observe the artworks and folios created by some of 2023’s highest achieving Year 12 students, including our very own Class of 2023 Sacred Heart graduates, Emma Ma, Ingrid Tinney and Georgia Warriner, whose amazing Year 12 work featured in this year’s SACE Art Show!

The Year 9s engaged with a ‘gallery bingo’ in which they had to find a variety of artworks, such as sculptures, paintings, drawings, costumes and multimedia artworks/designs throughout the space. The excursion was a huge success, as the Year 9s were able to gain inspiration for their own visual arts practice, as well as their future school pathways.

Mikayla Reid (Year 9)

Year 7s try Bollywood dancing

On Wednesday this week, the Year 7s took part in a Bollywood dance incursion in the old gym. It was a magnificent experience in which we were given new skills and knowledge of the large array of Bollywood and Indian dancing. It was such fun being able to shake our hips to the sound of the coin scarves jingling to the beat. It was truly an eye opener in the vast world of dance and culture and a great memoir for the first Arts Week for Year 7s!

View our Bollywood dancing in action here!

Watercolour Landscapes Workshop

On Tuesday, 19 March, Judith Sweetman from the Art Gallery of SA ran a workshop with Year 10 Visual Art students and the Japanese Exchange students from Okayama Sozan High School. After looking at some of the gallery’s work by famous Australian artists, students created their own Australian watercolour landscapes. This workshop was a wonderful opportunity for our Visual Arts students and visiting exchange students to connect with an arts practitioner, build their technical skills and to create beautiful works of art. Congratulations to all the students involved and thank you to our Visual Art teacher, Rebecca Ewer for organising this enriching experience.

Music News

Stations of the Cross music

On Holy Thursday (28 March), the Liturgy Ensemble participated in the Stations of the Cross production, accompanying the Drama students with emotional and expressive music. The students involved were enthusiastic, with many from the College community expressing their gratitude towards the students’ performances and how the music accompanying the visual aspect of the production was very thought provoking and powerful. Students involved were: Charlotte Richardson (Year 12), Dylan O’Neil (Year 12), Marnie Mae Croney (Year 12), Connor Ramm (Year 11), Cameron Moore (Year 11), Max Barnett (Year 11) and Myles Barnett (Year 10). Well done to all musicians involved!

Adam Page Music Workshop

As a part of Arts Week, Champagnat Campus welcomed the talented multi-instrumentalist and composer, Adam Page. Adam’s expertise and passion for music were evident throughout the day as he engaged with our students in a series of dynamic workshops and performances.

Adam’s first workshop of the day was with our Concert Band students from ‘The Saba Project’. Adam led our musicians through an engaging session aimed at refining their current repertoire. Through his expert guidance, our students not only enhanced their technical skills but also gained valuable insights into musical interpretation and expression

Next up, we had our Year 7 Music Performance students who have been learning woodwind and brass instruments since the beginning of the year. In this session, Adam focused on the art of improvisation, challenging students to explore the possibilities of musical expression using just two notes over a chord. It was a fantastic opportunity for our young musicians to unleash their creativity and develop their improvisational skills under Adam’s expert guidance.

Following this, Adam led a workshop with mostly Year 8 and 9 students, where they delved into the world of improvisation using a pentatonic scale. This session allowed students to explore different melodic possibilities within a structured framework, fostering their confidence and creativity as improvisers.

After lunch, the Year 8 cohort enjoyed a performance where Adam showcased his looping abilities and remarkable talent by making music out of people’s names and the sounds they made. It was an interactive and memorable experience that captivated the audience and highlighted the endless possibilities of musical expression.

The day concluded with Adam challenging our Super Band to refine their playing and performance skills. With his expert feedback and encouragement, our talented musicians were inspired to push their boundaries and strive for excellence in their musical endeavors.

Adam’s visit was truly a highlight of Arts Week, leaving a lasting impression on students and staff alike. We extend our sincere gratitude to Adam for sharing his passion, talent, and expertise with us, and we look forward to continuing our musical journey with his invaluable guidance in the future.
