Today Champagnat and Marcellin Campuses came together as one to celebrate Marist Day 2023.
To our Sacred Heart College community
We congratulate all of our students for the wonderful things they have achieved this term. We thank our staff for all of their exceptional efforts throughout the term and we wish each member of the College community a relaxing term break.

Marist Day 2023 celebrations
Today the College came together at Champagnat Campus for our annual Marist Day. This was a day to ponder and strengthen our Marist tradition. We came together for cross-campus interaction and to join in solidarity to support Australian Marist Solidarity (AMS) and the countries of the 2023 Immersion trips: Fiji and the Philippines.
Students participated in a whole College liturgy with a theme devised by the Year 7-12 Mission Leaders: “Created in Love, Called to Action”. The liturgy began with a Welcome to Country by Uncle Frank Wanganeen and also included a reflection video featuring our students commenting on the theme for the day.
The 2023 Immersion students continued to fundraise for the Marist communities in Fiji and the Philippines through having students and staff decorate House banners using gold coins and holding various food stalls. Donations can still be made by clicking here.
Meet our 2024 Student Leaders
Today we were pleased to announce the 2024 College Captains and Student Leaders that will be leading Sacred Heart College next year. Students undertook a process of nomination, interview and finally presenting to their peers to be elected into various positions. Immersion Quiz Night
It was well and truly back to the 80s last Friday night when the 2023 Immersion Team hosted a Quiz Night fundraiser. Over 250 people dressed up in block colours, puffed sleeves and crimped hair to raise funds for Marist communities in Fiji and Philippines, which the Immersions Teams will visit in November.
Twenty five tables battled it out over five rounds, including an 80s themed music round, with Mr Garreth Hutton hosting as quizmaster extraordinaire. The top prize winner was the ‘teacher table’, and table prizes were also awarded to second and third places, as well as the wooden spoon! An extensive silent auction was popular during the night with some serious bidding on key items including a round of golf at the Royal Adelaide Golf Course. The live auction included an overnight stay at the luxury Bridgeport Hotel and a signed Port Power guernsey from the 2023 team. Overall the Quiz night raised more than $16,000 for Marist Solidarity!
An evening like this doesn’t run successfully without a large team of people behind it:
- Garreth Hutton for MC and Quizmaster for the night
- P&F for providing volunteers for the bar
- Immersions staff and students who did all the promotions, prizes, quiz questions and decorations
- Maintenance staff for the setup and pack up
- Liz Shrimpton for all the background ordering and logistics.
Last but not least, a huge thanks goes to all of our sponsors and those who provide donations for the event. The support of all these people enabled us to raise a significant amount which will be used to provide better resources and educational opportunities for children in the communities we visit. The generosity of our Sacred Heart College community is astounding!
For those who weren’t able to attend or support, please help add to our fundraising goal by donating to today’s Marist Day here.
Year 7s sustainble city visit
During Week 9 and 10 of this term, Year 7 Ignite Program students travelled to Christies Walk, an ecologically sustainable village in the heart of Adelaide. This gave students the opportunity to explore a real life example of sustainable living as an introduction to our Term 4 Ignite Unit ‘Tiny Houses’, where students will be designing their own ecologically sustainable tiny home for the future.
The students gained valuable insights into how the houses were built and what materials were used to maximise energy efficiency. They were particularly taken with the beauty of the outside and rooftop gardens which supported plants that provide for the community.
It was a wonderful experience for both students and teachers alike and certainly opened up our eyes to the values of being sustainable for our future generations.
Year 9 girls experience Flinder’s STEM Enrichment Day
A group of 11 Year 9 girls were granted the exciting opportunity to engage in Flinders University’s STEM Enrichment program. The focus of the day was to empower and encourage young women to pursue STEM pathways.
The girls had the opportunity to utilise brand-new, state of the art laboratory facilities while they conducted a series of experiments around Green Chemistry, Space and Matter. These activities not only directly connected to the Australian Curriculum, but allowed the girls to explore Science in a fun and meaningful way (who knew learning could be fun!). The day ended with our girls sitting in on a Q+A session led by a panel of inspiring women in STEM sharing their journeys along with the amazing opportunities available to those who choose to pursue STEM as a career.
The girls walked away from the day with a newfound passion for science, and the resounding mantra, “follow your passions and dreams, regardless of the perceived barriers”. Hopefully we see a few more Sacred Heart students aspiring to be scientists, mathematicians and engineers, providing adequate representation for women in the STEM world and smashing the status-quo.
UniSA Blue Brick Road Business Experience Day
After years of careful planning, University of South Australia launched its Blue Brick Road Business Experience Day today at City West Campus. Year 11 students from Sacred Heart joined students from University Senior College to experience a day in business in a university setting.
Students undertook a model 1-day on campus program where they were given a broad societal challenge; sport and recreation, social justice, future food, and well being. Students had to apply the knowledge and skills they had learned during the day, together with their own entrepreneurship, to develop a potential product solution.
The day began with a presentation from Adelaide Crows footballer, Rory Sloane, who shared with students his experience identifying the market need for his FaceFootys product. Rory generously shared his experience of the opportunities, risks and challenges with the accounting, finance, economic and marketing analysis required – even sharing early break even analyses and market opportunities with students on the pathway to partnership with Sherrin.
Matt Hyde, owner of Speakers Corner and world-renowned actor, presented on the importance of communication skills and worked with small groups to coach students on using their breath, voice and body to give strong, confident and powerful presentations.
Students were randomly assigned to four different groups in teams of five to traverse the Blue Brick Road, moving around to four concurrent stations to gain disciplinary expertise in marketing, accounting, finance, and economics from leading academics in their field.
At the end of the day, student teams pitched their product idea in a 2 minute pitch, which were extremely impressive and insightful, making it was very challenging for the judging panels to allocate the winning teams.
The day provided students with an understanding of a number of desirable skills for the workplace, including presentation skills, working as a team, collaborating with others they had never met before and analytical and creative skills.
Chavoin House supporting the Butterfly Foundation
Throughout Term 3, the Chavoin House Student Leaders at Marcellin Campus have been raising funds and awareness for The Butterfly Foundation. The Butterfly Foundation is a national charity for all Australians impacted by eating disorders and body image issues, and for the families, friends and communities who support them. More than $700 was raised for this worthy cause, as well as shining a spotlight on a cause which is close to the hearts of our students, and one which they felt compelled to support.
Throughout this student-led initiative, our dedicated team of Student Leaders demonstrated Family Spirit by tapping into the Sacred Heart Old Collegians community to seek the support of some highly sought after brands including Outdated, Dunkachino and Andorwith. Our sincere thanks go to these businesses for their generous support.
Arts News
As we head towards the holidays, there have been two performance nights at Marcellin Campus which celebrated the creativity and hard work that students have put into refining their craft, as well as their countless hours of rehearsal!
Year 11 Drama students worked so hard on their piece, ‘A Hymn to the Hateful’ (written by Australian playwright, Finegan Kruckemeyer) and produced a striking piece of Drama under the dynamic direction of Majo Bogatec.
The Year 10, 11 and 12 Music students performed an eclectic range of different solo performance pieces for their assessment on many different instruments. Our students and staff are truly dedicated to creating amazing work, even at this late stage in the term. Well done to all!
Year 11 Drama Production + Matinee Performance
Performing Finegan Kruckemeyer’s play, ‘A Hymn To The Hateful’, came as an exciting prospect after students of the Year 11 Drama class were invited to participate in the Young Theatre Makers Award – a new initiative run by the State Theatre Company of South Australia in conjunction with the Flinders University Drama Centre. The Award, which has been set up to celebrate student’s creative work, gives students and teachers an opportunity to see what others create when given similar parameters; receive feedback from industry professionals; and engage students in Tertiary Arts spaces, encouraging them into Performing Arts tertiary study and careers.
As one of six selected schools the Year 11 Drama class was presented with the challenge of devising a 15 minute physical theatre sequence, applying the techniques of renowned and innovative theatre company, Frantic Assembly. Frantic Assembly’s method involves a rigorous devising process where the creative team works closely together to shape the narrative and physical language of the production. The conditions of the Theatre Makers Award also stipulated that our work should communicate the theme of ‘cohesion’ – with our entry to be performed with the five other schools at the Matthew Flinders Theatre on October the 20th. The ‘Prologue’ of Kruckemeyer’s play hence became the perfect piece for us to devise and enter into the Theatre Makers Award. Last Thursday the Year 11 Drama class showcased the students’ Theatre Makers Award entry [the Prologue] applying their knowledge of the Frantic Assembly Method, followed by the rest of Kruckemeyer’s play, ‘A Hymn To The Hateful’. They performed a matinee performance to Year 8 and 9 Drama students from Champagnat Campus and then to family and friends in the evening.

Sports News
Term 3 sport has officially wrapped up as we leave the chilly vibes of winter sports behind. Thank you to all players, coaches and helpers for your commitment and dedication to Sacred Heart sport in Terms 2 and 3. We hope that you all enjoy the upcoming holiday break and we look forward to trading those winter layers for summer sport starting up again in Week 1 of Term 4.
Pedal to the metal for 24 hour race
The Rural City of Murray Bridge hosted the 24 hour Australian HPV Super Series where more than 200 human-powered trikes competed over the weekend of 16 – 17 September. Sacred Heart entered three trikes: HeartBeat, HeartBurn and BraveHeart, with students from Years 7 – 10 competing.
The Murray Bridge race is a favourite amongst teams as it sees Sturt Reserve turn into a mini city with camping onsite, a variety of pit setups and the consistent hum of generators powering fridges, timing workstations and screens to view the race from all parts of the track.
The race started out in fairly warm conditions with riders changing regularly and taking advantage of the hydration station at the pit area. As technology has improved, so too has the trike designs and the speed at which they can race. Much faster speeds added a new dimension to the race with the famous Bellotti Corner (AKA: Crash Corner) seeing many rollovers. HeartBurn was an early victim of a high speed crash with Bunyip from Unity College, Murray Bridge which saw the trike ruled out for the rest of the race after 6 hours due to a seriously bent safety roll cage. With our rider uninjured, many marvelled at the damage and acknowledged the role the safety cage plays in keeping riders safe during the race.
HeartBurn and HeartBeat continued through the night, mostly unscathed by rollovers, and with riders finding the cold, late night conditions a challenge. Especially for those who were first timers.
Final results for Sacred Heart College:
- Heartbeat placed 20th in the S2 category (Middle School) with 406 laps
- HeartBurn placed 33rd in the S2 category with 360 laps
- BraveHeart in S3 Category (Senior School) with 109 laps completed for 6 hours before retiring broken.
A big thank you to the parents and caregivers who supported their children in this event. It’s a big ask to give up a comfy bed at home to camp out in the reserve or organise alternative accommodation, along with getting up in the late/early hours to assist with rider changes and catering. Without the support of everyone, the event would be the community success it is today.
Second place Chess Champions
Congratulations to the Sacred Heart College Chess team for placing 2nd in the SA Chess Interschool Championships! On Tuesday 19 September, the Chess Club made their way to St Martin de Porres School, with 14 students, the largest team of all competing schools. Sacred Heart had many students make it to the top 10 amongst the 62 students from various schools competing in total.
Due to the balancing of teams, the primary and senior competitions were combined, meaning students aged 7 could be up against students aged 17! The Sacred Heart team played strategically and fairly, and were very supportive of the younger players. Well done to all involved! We now look forward to the State Championships in Term 4.
SAAS Awards Night
On Tuesday 19 September the Sports Association for Adelaide Schools (SAAS) held their annual Sports Awards at St Peter’s College.
