Hearts News (Week 2 Term 4, Thursday 26 October 2023)

Today we farewelled the graduating Class of 2023 on their final day of school.

To our Sacred Heart College community

As we approach the end of Week 2 of Term 4, we celebrate the cessation of formal classes for our Year 12 students.

It is remarkable how quickly that time arrives; after 13 years of compulsory schooling (that is, about 2,480 days at school, 52 school reports, and this year, at least 200 SACE credits, 30 assessment tasks (in just 31 weeks), at least four external assessments, one Graduation Mass, and one “last day”), the routine of formal schooling comes to a close ever so quickly.

Our Class of 2023 have been a wonderful group of ambassadors of Sacred Heart College; hard working, determined, caring and fun. They have been eager to lean on our staff, to ask for advice, and to look out for one another.

And after 13 years of the routine of school, tomorrow  morning (for most), the routine changes, and instead we are focused on exam preparation or completing final investigations and external tasks.

I take this opportunity to offer a vote of thanks to a number of people:

  • To our 2023 College Leaders who have wonderfully led our student body, and have been students of action, not just words;
  • To the families of our Year 12 students, who have supported their children, and our staff, so that collectively we have achieved great things this year;
  • To the staff of Sacred Heart, who give so much of themselves to the students in their care, and who manage the fine balance between setting high expectations of our students with the incredible support they offer them;
  • To our graduating class of 2023, who to this point in time, have done themselves, their families and their school proud; now it is just the final hurdle of final external assessments to clear.

I wish our graduating class well for the final few weeks of Year 12, in particular for their exams. I look forward to celebrating with staff, students and families at the Graduation Ceremony later this year, at the Laureate Assembly in Term 1, 2024, and indeed, all the wonderful things this group will achieve in the months and years ahead.

Daniel Lynch
Principal

Farewell to the Class of 2023

Today was the final day of formal classes for our Year 12 students. Marcellin Campus came together at the Graduation Assembly this afternoon, which provided an opportunity for the College community to farewell our Year 12 cohort. This also saw the handover of student leadership to the leaders-elect for 2024 who made their Captains pledge, and the final address from our 2023 College Captains, Conor Gluyas and Manni Tierney.

The assembly also featured the presentation of many significant awards. We congratulate the following students:

  • Harrison Wickers – Debourg Arts Award

Presented by Br Des Howard (Marist Brothers Australia), the Debourg Arts Award is presented to the student who has made an exceptional contribution to the Creative and Performing Arts at Sacred Heart College.

  • Isabella Drew – Hearts Sportswoman Award & Clancy Luscombe – Hearts Sportsman Award

Isabella Drew’s outstanding contributions to sports have seen her excel in multiple sporting areas, including Netball and Football. Isabella truly embodies fairplay, integrity, competitive spirit and leadership, making her a deserving recipient of this award.

Clancy Luscombe has been a dedicated representative of the College and local community in various swimming competitions, showcasing his talent and commitment to the sport. Clancy’s achievements, both in sports and his community involvement, reflect his outstanding character, drive, and dedication to making a positive impact on the world.

  • Mackayla Harrison – Bradley James Amos Community and Reconciliation Award

Presented by Br Des Howard (Marist Brothers Australia), the Bradley James Amos Community and Reconciliation Award recognises a student who has made an outstanding contribution to the Aboriginal Program and furthering reconciliation throughout the Sacred Heart Community.

Mackayla Harrison has been a reliable and committed leader, furthering the cause of reconciliation through being a significant contributor to our Aboriginal Program family. She has made everyone feel welcome and engaged and has been humble in her community service.

  • George Wilson – ADF Long Tan Youth Leadership & Teamwork Award

Presented by Squadron Leader Justin Byers (Australian Defence Force), the Australian Defence Force (ADF) Long Tan Youth Leadership and Teamwork award has been created to acknowledge the achievements of young people who have demonstrated outstanding qualities of leadership and teamwork either within the school or the wider community.

George Wilson leads with a sense of gentleness and humility, and often seeks out those on the margins who need additional support and friendship – true Marist qualities. He is always willing to put his hand up and help – social justice initiatives are close to his heart. He is also a high academic achiever and a role model for his peers, as evidenced by his leadership role within the Boarding Community, Homeroom and Montagne House.

  • Sophie Gregg – ADF Future Innovators Award

Presented by Squadron Leader Justin Byers (Australian Defence Force), the ADF Future Innovators Award recognises a student’s ability to demonstrate innovation and learning in STEM subjects.

Sophie Gregg studied a combination of STEM subjects at Stage 2 (Biology, Nutrition, Maths Methods and the Design, Technology & Engineering subject, Material Solutions) and has utilised her mathematical skills for her Material Solutions project – a mosaic tessellation pattern designed with CAD, producing a table top for the hallway table she created. With exceptional attention to detail and outstanding craftsmanship, Sophie combined all elements of STEM into a real world application. She has also been accepted into a position at the Australian Defence Force Academy in 2024.

  • Jack Oates – Molly Byrne Shield

Presented by Ms Sarah Andrews MP, Member for Gibson, the Molly Byrne Shield is named in honour of Molly Byrne who was the first female Labor member of the South Australian parliament. The Molly Byrne Shield is named recognises a student who has demonstrated great determination, either through their schooling, their community activities, or in their home lives.

Jack Oates joined our College community as a Year 11 student in 2022, and is also a boarder. He has showed perseverance in his academic studies, and constantly strives to do his best. Jack has contributed to a positive culture in the Boarding House and has demonstrated great leadership, both in this community living environment, as a student at the College and as one of our Sports Captains.

  • Shane Raphael – Sam Climpson-Stewart Memorial Cricket Trophy

Presented by Ms Kate Climpson, the Climpson-Stewart family have generously created this award for the best Sacred Heart team player at the annual Marist Cricket Carnival. Sam Climpson-Stewart passed away in an accident in 2007 whilst he was a Year 11 boarding student. His family have created this perpetual cricket trophy in honour of his memory, signifying his love of cricket and his commitment to representing the College in the sport he loved.

Shane Raphael’s leadership at the 2022 Marist Cricket Carnival in Warragul, Victoria, was nothing short of exceptional. Despite facing adversity with an injury early on, he displayed remarkable resilience and determination. His unwavering dedication to the team’s success and his capacity to inspire his teammates set him apart as a leader.

  • Mohsin Iqbal, Macy Scripps, Patrick McAvaney & Lola Ryder – Principal’s Award

Presented by Mr Daniel Lynch (College Principal), the Principal’s Awards are awarded at the discretion of the Principal. This year, four students have been selected by the Principal as a result of their outstanding work ethic and their commitment to all aspects of College life. These students received awards as recognition of their outstanding leadership and commitment to our community.

Mohsin Iqbal has displayed a resounding commitment to success in his chosen pathway as evidenced by his outstanding work ethic which has seen him achieve excellent grades throughout his time at Sacred Heart. He has also participated in the Flinders University Extension Studies Program this year. He was affirmed by his peers for his ability to represent and live out the Marist Pillars, specifically his Love of Work and Family Spirit. He is a remarkable young man and someone who we have no doubt will contribute significantly to the wider community as he follows his pathway beyond school.

Macy Scripps has consistently demonstrated leadership skills through her time at the College and especially as a House Captain this year. She is a positive contributor to fundraising initiatives and has been a reliable and compassionate member of her homeroom. She works hard at her studies including as a participant in the Flinders University Extension Studies Program this year and has participated in many aspects of College life with enthusiasm. Macy is genuine, down to earth and makes positive relationships.

Patrick McAvaney has been an active and enthusiastic House Captain in all respects. He regularly “does good quietly” by volunteering and assisting, without looking for acknowledgement. He coached a Champagnat sports team and was a great support for the coaches and mentor for the boys. He has led and supported House events, and was instrumental in the “House Spirit Award” win for his House at Sports Day. This student demonstrates exemplary leadership with his peers and is a positive person who treats others with care and respect.

Lola Ryder is an outstanding young person, who is an asset to the College community. She demonstrates excellent leadership, teamwork and communication skills, and always puts others before herself. Lola is a dedicated and conscientious student, who is always willing to help others in need. She has also participated in the Flinders University Extension Studies Program this year and has been heavily involved in all aspects of school life, leading fundraising and various initiatives. She is an active leader in the school community, and does ‘good quietly’ through her work as Mission Captain, her involvement in Game Changers and social justice events, displaying great maturity, care, respect and humility.

  • Joseph Tregenza – Mary MacKillop Award for Excellence

Presented by Mr Daniel Lynch (College Principal), the Mary MacKillop Award is presented to a student in the graduating cohort who follows the example of Australia’s Patron Saint, St. Mary of the Cross MacKillop, who “never saw a need without doing something about it”.

Joseph Tregenza is polite, kind-hearted and generous. He has been an integral member of the Game Changers and MSol groups in his time at Marcellin. He was often the first to put his hand up to initiate, organise and participate in many fundraisers and awareness campaigns. Whilst he has often demonstrated that wonderful Marist trait of “doing good quietly”, he also encouraged and inspired others to join him, creating a stronger sense of community. These leadership skills have served him well as one of our Mission Captains.

  • Isabel Bryksy – Marist Spirit Award

Presented by Mr Daniel Lynch (College Principal), the Marist Spirit Award recognises a Year 12 student who displays the five Marist Characteristics in their school life.

Isabel Bryksy is present to the community in her commitment to sporting pursuits and regularly represents the College in a number of sports. She demonstrates a love of work by displaying perseverance and putting in 100% effort into her academic pursuits. As a student she is an excellent role model to her peers, and is gracious and humble in her response to acknowledgement of her academic results. She regularly supports and encourages others in their learning; this family spirit clearly displayed as a leader both at school and in the Boarding House.

  • Benjamin Dewhirst – Champagnat Award

Presented by Mr Daniel Lynch (College Principal), the Champagnat Award is presented to the student who is regarded as being the most outstanding ‘all rounder’ in the Graduating class – for contribution to academic life, commitment to the cause of social justice, and participation in the wider life of the school especially in regard to Marist Leadership which enhances the family spirit of the College.

Benjamin Dewhirst is the epitome of an all rounder. He is kind, cares for students in need and holds the Marist tradition in the utmost respect. He is diligent with his schoolwork, whilst also taking the time to assist and encourage his peers with their own studies. Benjamin is dedicated to making our College and the wider community an inclusive, welcoming, and supportive place for all. His leadership is displayed with kindness, compassion, empathy, and love. He leads by example and is not one to shy away from a challenge, no matter what it may be. Benjamin has engaged in College fundraisers and social justice campaigns for many years as a Sacred Heart student and is often the first to volunteer to support those within our community. He speaks up, shows initiative, looks after his peers, is a great communicator with a positive attitude and a high level of maturity.

We thank our Marist Brothers Br Des Howard (Community Leader of the Marist Brothers at Somerton Park), Brother Gregory McCrystal, Br Patrick McInerney, Br Byran Leak, and Fr Michael Brennan for joining us at our celebration. We also thank special guests, Ms Sarah Andrews MP (Member for Gibson), Squadron Leader Justin Byer (Australian Defence Force), Ms Kate Climpson and Kate’s son Mr Anthony Climpson-Stewart, Mr Alex Dighton (Head of Champagnat Campus) and Shayanne Lim and Ethan Mangos (Year 9 Leaders from Champagnat Campus) for joining us for today’s celebration.

At the conclusion of assembly, Year 12 students gathered in Walter Park for a final time to say good bye to their peers and their 13 years of schooling. We wish our Year 12 students every success moving forward.

Year 12 Graduation Mass

The Class of 2023 and their families gathered last night for the Year 12 Graduation Mass and an opportunity to celebrate our Family Spirit, one of the cornerstones of our Marist community. This was never more evident than during the Marist Heart Ceremony, where each graduate was invited to place their name inside our Marist Heart.

The Eucharistic celebration gives our graduating cohort the opportunity to reflect on their time here at Sacred Heart College, and eagerly await the next phase of their life. This was beautifully articulated by our 2023 Mission Captains, Lola and Joseph, in their address to the community.

“Tomorrow we will hug in undeniable love, cry tears of ever-present joy and feel nostalgic for a moment that we have not yet left. Tomorrow, we will spend the day taking pictures in our minds that only we will be able to see in years to come. Tomorrow is a day that we will never forget as we grasp onto the memory of our school days. Tomorrow, we will work towards bigger things, and get closer to the next life milestone. But let’s not worry about tomorrow, as tomorrow will take care of itself.”
– Lola and Joseph, 2023 Mission Captains Address

Year 12 Theme Day – What did you want to be when you were 5?

Last Friday our Year 12s participated in their last theme day at the College with the College Leaders of 2023 encouraging students to come dressed as what they wanted to be when they were 5. Students participated in the day for a gold coin donation to continue supporting our College Immersion Fundraisers. The day inspired our Year 12s to tap into their childhood aspirations, which saw students dress up as everything from truck drivers and police officers, to fairies and elves. Well done to the cohort for embracing the day!

College Captains’ Government House visit

Over the school holiday break, our College Captains, Conor Gluyas and Manni Tierney were invited to Government House for the Reception for Secondary School Leaders, an annual tradition to acknowledge and celebrate Year 12 student leaders from schools across South Australia. They were hosted by the Governor of South Australia, Her Excellency the Honourable Frances Adamson AC, and Mr Rod Bunton. Blair Boyer, Minister for Education, also spoke of the important role of school leaders, and pathways for future success, promoting a positive message about the value of education.

Marist Youth Connect Night @SHC

Late in Term 3, the last Marist Youth Ministry (MYM) Connect Night of 2023 was held with Cardijn College. Over the course of this year, Sacred Heart College and Cardijn College organised three Marist Connect Nights, bringing students from both College’s together to build relationships within the Marist School community.

This Connect Night was based on life post school in 2024, where old scholars of both Sacred Heart College and Cardijn College joined the night and were part of an interview panel to answer student questions. Students involved were given the opportunity to reflect on their journey thus far, contemplate their future, ask questions and seek guidance about this challenging period in life.

Overall, the night provided these students with a valuable opportunity of reflection and contemplation that aids their preparation for life post school.

Arts News

Even though we have only had almost two weeks back at school after holidays, there has been so much going on in the Arts. What an amazing celebration of talents in Music and Drama! Our students are so very talented, passionate and dedicated.

A big thank you this week to our amazing Arts staff, in particular, Majo Bogatec, Samara Churchett, Bec Page and Elian Hamilton, who have endlessly supported our students to excel so far this term. We look forward to seeing what Term 4 brings.

Battle of the Bands

Last Tuesday Champagnat students competed in the annual Battle of the Bands competition. Students were treated to 10 unique musical acts including a teachers band. Students dazzled the crowd with their musicianship and talents that had many spectators singing along.

Congratulations to the following musicians for taking out prizes on the day:

Best Group: Vocal Harmony with their song ‘Stand Up’.

Best Individual Performer: Ashton Wickers for his versatility and passion throughout his multiple performances in many groups playing multiple instruments on the day.

2023 Battle of the Bands Overall Winner: The Okayest Band (Year 9 class band) for performing Amy Winehouse’s ‘Valerie’. Special mention to Emma Bert, a Year 7 student who stepped in to fill the role of vocalist for the Year 9s due to an absence.

Stage 1 Drama class wins State Theatre Co. Award

Congratulations to our Stage 1 Drama class who won the State Theatre Company’s Flinders University Young Theatre Makers Award!

Sacred Heart College competed against five schools, with each performing in the Frantic Assembly Physical Theatre style and exploring the theme of ‘Cohesion’. Our students performed the Prologue of Finegan Kruckemeyer’s play, ‘Hymn to the Hateful’, which they performed for the Hearts Community last term.

This program, presented in association with Drama SA, links young high school theatremakers to professional industry resources and mentorship.

Marcellin Hearts Ensembles final performance

Our Marcellin Campus Ensembles – The Hearts Ensembles – gathered to perform for family and friends in the Debourg Theatre in their last major performance for the school year. The evening, held last Thursday, featured our many CEA instrumental groups including: Drumline, Studio Bands, Guitar Bands, Jazz Band and Show Band, our Year 10/11 VET Music class bands, and a number of student duets – a great variety of styles and outstanding performances.

Highlights of the evening included Studio Band 1’s amazing cover of ‘Feel Good Inc.’ by Gorillaz, an outstanding metal showcase by Mild Distortion (Guitar Band 2), brilliant improvised solos from the Jazz Band, and an all out dance party with all participating students, along with the Show Band’s Performance of ABBA’s ‘Dancing Queen’, which students chose to dedicate to our departing Arts staff whom have played a pivotal role in supporting SHC music performances over the years.

We acknowledged the dedication of our Year 12 Music students whose musical Journeys at Sacred Herat are coming to an end. We do hope they will all go on to do amazing things and continue to make music they enjoy and love.

Many thanks to our incredibly hardworking and dedicated Ensemble Directors, Neil Christopher, Brayden Leske, Zac Curtis, Will Rana; to Music teachers, Samara Churchett and Fleur Van Den Berg for their support; and the assistance of Arts staff from both Marcellin and Champagnat who assisted on the night.

Term 3 at Marcellin Campus saw 36 teams compete in the annual Marcellin Lunchtime Badminton Tournament. A total of 62 students and 10 staff members participated in the doubles competition. Each round was a knockout round and it was great to see not only the students, but also staff showcase their competitiveness, athleticism and family spirit.

On Tuesday 24 October the grand final match was held in Marist Hall. This saw Year 12 students, Ben Dewhirst and Kai Reid take on last year’s champions, Mr Pinnington and Mr Wright. It was a close game, however Mr Pinnington and Mr Wright were able to come out on top, winning the first 2 sets and keeping their title safe for another year.

Thank you to all staff and students for a great competition, and special mention to Mr Pinnington for arranging this great event. We look forward to seeing the tournament grow even further next year.
