Hearts News (Week 6 Term 4, Thursday 23 November 2023)

Champagnat’s much anticipated annual Sports Day last week saw some outstanding sporting prowess and results.

To our Sacred Heart College community

Last week, our Year 12 students celebrated the conclusion of their final examinations. In all, our Year 12 students sat four language oral exams and 20 written exams, and our teaching staff submitted result sheets for 76 subject investigations and 46 school assessment summaries! The conclusion of Year 12 classes at Sacred Heart is quite the undertaking!

All of this means that all assessment is now complete, and as such, the waiting game begins. In my day, our Year 12 results were received in the mail, and we queued at midnight outside The Advertiser building to see if we had been offered our preferred University course.

For the class of 2023, SACE results will be released online on Monday 18 December, and as a community, we look forward to celebrating some outstanding results.

Congratulations to all of our students for their commitment, endeavour, and determination, and good luck for the weeks ahead. I look forward to seeing you all at our Graduation Ceremony on 1 December.

Principal

We also acknowledged the work of Joshua Saunders who designed the 2023 Cricket playing shirt which will be worn by the 1st XI at the Marist Cricket Carnival in Bunbury in December.

Champagnat Sports Day

Last Monday, Champagnat Campus celebrated Sports Day, a highly anticipated event of the school year. Students showcased House Spirit by dressing in vibrant House colours and creative costumes, making it a day of friendly competition on the Champagnat grounds.

The day featured track and field events where students achieved personal bests and set new Champagnat records. This year, the Sports Day program expanded to include Netball and Volleyball alongside the traditional athletics events such as running, jumping, and throwing. The day concluded with the eagerly awaited staff/student relay and a new event, the House Mascot Race.

Congratulations to all students involved and a special thank you to those from Marcellin Campus for their support. Chavoin claimed the Sports Day House Shield, with Montagne earning the House Spirit Cup. Additionally, individual Age Champions excelled across nine athletic events.

Appreciation goes to the dedicated staff, including the Maintenance and Ground team, who ensured the smooth running of the day by preparing the oval and facilitating the events. The presence of parents/caregivers, family, and friends added to the wonderful support for the school community.

Farewell to our 2023 Immersion teams

After a four year absence, our Immersion program has returned with teams flying out to Fiji and the Philippines last week. Both teams will spend 13 days living and working in Marist communities and schools, putting into action a ‘love of work‘ and ‘family spirit’.

The 34 staff and students look forward to sharing their experience with our community following their return to school in 2024.

A huge thank you to the Hearts community for their support of this year’s program, which included fundraising efforts totalling almost $40,000, which we know will be well utilised to support education and community projects in Fiji and the Philippines.

Sacred Heart supporting the Vinnies Christmas Appeal

A huge thank you to our families, students and staff who have once again displayed their generosity and kindness through donations in support of a number of importnat outreach initiatives. At Marcellin Campus, each Homeroom put together a hamper of gifts, toys, games and Christmas food for the Vinnies Christmas Appeal, which will be passed onto a family doing it tough at the moment. We received the following email after the hampers were collected, which provides some context as to the importance of our generosity at this current time:

Thank you to the SHC community for your generous gift donations to Vinnies. There is certainly a significant and growing need in the community for this type of help at Christmas and we are fortunate to have SHC assisting us in our endeavors.” – Damian, Vinnies – Brighton Conference

Meanwhile, Champagnat Campus has been busy promoting the annual Christmas Appeal. Each House is involved in the collection of Christmas gifts, food and monetary donations for those in need. A number of Catholic charities are being supported by the various Houses including: Marian – Centacare’s Louise Place; Montagne – Caritas Australia; Chavoin – Hutt St Centre; Chanel – Adelaide Day Centre for Homeless Persons; and Fourviere – St Vincent de Paul.

VAILO 500 Girls On Track

Today, girls from the College Pedal Prix team were invited to participate in the annual Girls on Track experience at the Vailo Adelaide 500. The experience, which started early this morning, gave the girls the opportunity to embark in an engineering based (STEM) activity and take part in a Reaction & Fitness Challenge. They were able to perform a Pit Stop Challenge and test their driving skills in a Formula 1 race simulator, exploring the inner workings of the pit area under race conditions. The experience also gave the girls the opportunity to engage with female role models who currently work in motorsport.

Despite the cold and rainy conditions at the track, the girls had a great time immersed in all things motorsport!

Journey to Emmaus Retreat Day

Last Friday saw six of our Year 10 Game Changer students volunteer their time to help facilitate the Journey to Emmaus program held at McAuley Community School, Hove. This program featured Year 6 students from Catholic primary schools throughout Adelaide including St Martin de Porres, Stella Maris, St Bernadette’s, Christ the King and McAuley. The purpose of these days is to allow for students from different primary schools heading to Sacred Heart College and other high schools to establish and build relationships with their future peers.

Our Year 10 students were responsible for their own group of 10 students, guiding them through multiple sessions that consisted of team building exercises, exploring their faith and mentoring them on what life in high school is like. The primary school students involved in this day were especially thankful for the Sacred Heart students’ presence and guidance as they now feel better equipped to face the challenges of high school.

St Anthony’s Primary School visit

For the second year running, Year 6 students from St Anthony’s Primary School, Edwardstown visited Champagnat Campus last Tuesday to gain further exposure to scientific equipment for their in-class focus topic – electricity. Students engaged in a range of activities related to electricity including creating parallel and series circuits, and testing for conductors and insulators. Following this, students were arranged into small groups to partake in activities such as creating solar energy windmills, moving a can with a balloon and receiving an insight into static electricity through the van de graaf generator. The Science lesson concluded at the end of block one with the Year 6 students thoroughly enjoying their experience at Champagnat Campus.

Stage 1 Geography Camp

For the first time, 36 Stage 1 Geography and Stage 1 Earth and Environmental students, along with teachers Jordan Walker-Roberts, Joel Broadway and David Morrow, ventured to Wallaroo to participate in an overnight camp during Week 4. Upon arrival, students got straight into collecting evidence through Field Work looking at the impact of the various major industries on the rural town. With very minimal complaining, the group walked over 10km in 30 degree heat through the different areas of Wallaroo, collecting useful information along the way.

After this gruelling stroll, students were treated to gourmet wood oven pizzas and some free time, which included fishing, viewing the silo art show, kicking around the soccer ball and participating in a sing along led by the very gifted Andrew McKinnon.

Day two led to more Field Work, examining the biodiversity of the coastline, before making the journey home. A great time was had by students, and their behaviour was exemplary (late night conversations notwithstanding).

Arts News

Term 4 has been an exciting and exhilarating time for the Arts at Sacred Heart College and in particular for Champagnat in the lead up to the Champagnat ‘Hearts Festival’ this evening. Our students have learnt to deal with real life struggles such as balancing creative excellence with the pressures of an exhibition deadline.

The adrenaline rush that comes with having work on display in such a public forum is a rare experience. The Dance, Drama and Music classrooms have shown an increase in focus, motivation and bubbling enthusiasm. The growth in our students’ learning from such intrinsic motivation to do their best for the audience is, dare I say, dramatic! The shine on our Visual Arts students as they see their work on display in the gallery is a moment that we, as teachers, live for. There is nothing like seeing a student have pride in their work.

Sharing artwork with an audience is a transformative experience, offering both personal and communal benefits. It cultivates resilience and confidence as artists navigate feedback, fostering growth in their craft. Communication skills are honed as creators articulate their inspirations and methods, bridging the gap between imagination and perception. The exchange of perspectives enriches the artistic process, expanding horizons and fostering a sense of community. Ultimately, sharing artwork not only amplifies individual skills but also contributes to a vibrant tapestry of collective creativity, making art a powerful catalyst for connection and understanding.

Thank you to all the students for their hard work and perseverance this term.

Thank you to all of the Arts & Technology staff for always supporting our students to achieve their best.

Finally, thank YOU, the audience, without whom all events across the year would not be possible.

Year 10 Drama Performance

On Monday evening the Year 10 Drama class performed Finegan Kruckemeyer’s play, The Girl Who Was a Hundred Girls; a text that is imaginative, beautiful, complex, sophisticated and layered, allowing students to explore various and creative ways of storytelling, as well as developing their performance skills.

Students, throughout the semester and leading into the performance, took confident ownership of the creative process and immersed themselves in all aspects of theatre making, including set design, set construction, costume and makeup design, lighting, sound, shadow puppetry, front of house design, and of course, acting. The performance was a great success and enjoyed by all.

Sports News

This week sees Champagnat head into the final round of College sport for the year, while Marcellin sport was finalised last weekend. Term 4 has been a busy one with Champagnat’s Sports Day last week, various knockout competitions with some finals rounds still to come over the next two weeks, and overall we have seen some outstanding team and individual performances. In what has been another jam packed year, Sacred Heart has once again achieved a very high standard of sporting endeavours. Most importantly though, we are proud of the way in which our students continue to represent the College in true Hearts spirit.

We take this opportunity to thank all our players, coaches, umpires and supporters for their continued support of the Hearts Sporting Program and we look forward to seeing you all back in 2024!

Good luck to our Marist Cricket team who depart for Bunbury, WA on Sunday 2 December to compete in the 49th Marist Cricket Carnival.

Middle Boys Knockout Baseball Finals

The Sacred Heart baseballers missed out on ultimate glory this year, but we played hard and represented the College admirably. After cruising through our minor round games against Woodcroft and Marryatville – and then Marryatville again in the first final – we found ourselves hoping to disrupt Seaton High School’s perpetual hold on the State Title. We would have to overcome their imposing pitching though and, unfortunately, this was the main story, as our bats generally struggled to make contact with their starter’s fastballs. We ultimately fell, 0-7. Harry Hutton, who walked three times against Marryatville, turned in a stoic shift on the mound for the first two innings. Lucas Wilson also battled heroically on the hill, and managed a sharp single to help us avoid being on the wrong end of a no-hitter. In addition, Ben Eyles consolidated his strong performance for the tournament by taking an impressive catch in centre field, while Angus Morgan earned his third hit for the day after a gritty, eleven-pitch at bat. Although the final score was somewhat deflating, the boys should hold their heads high for the way they carried themselves against a decorated opposition.
