Sports News (Friday 26 November)

To our Sacred Heart Community

Term 4 saw just short 5 week competitions for regular sport but another term of action packed knockout sport competition fixtures across both campuses.

School Sport SA Knockout Competition Results (Champagnat)

Year 8/9 Boys Baseball

  • SHC (11) defeated Gawler Districts (1)
  • Seaton High School (10) defeated SHC (4)

This year saw our squad travel to the new venue of Diamond Sports at West Beach in search of reclaiming Knockout Baseball glory from a few years ago. Our team of mostly Year 9’s took on Gawler Districts in Game 1 and scuffled early. However, we soon took a comfortable lead by riding the experienced and powerful bats of Callum Wilson, Charlie Huttenen and Ethan Fitzgerald. Wilson was also solid on the mound and Gawler failed to mount a significant challenge as we padded our lead, coming out 11-1 winners.

Game 2 presented a far greater challenge when we lined up against perennial stalwarts, Seaton High School. Our starting pitcher, Charlie Huttenen was stoic through several quality innings but Seaton found the gaps and managed to build what proved to be an insurmountable lead. The final score of 10-4 belied our tenacious efforts. Overall, the play and conduct of our boys on the day was outstanding. Other notable performances were Ben Camporeale’s impressive play at third, Henry Martinella’s command as our backstop for both games, and Kai Crabb’s two booming barrels at the plate. Special mentions are warranted for Tom Dermody, who deftly roamed centrefield and Lee Benham, who served as the team’s hype man. Further preparation and experience going forward should put us in a strong position to challenge for the title next year.

Year 8/9 Girls Basketball

  • SHC (96) defeated Woodcroft (21)
  • Immanuel College (49) defeated SHC (44)

The 8/9 KO Girls Basketball team had a short lived campaign but showed a lot of grit and class throughout. In order to progress into the next round, SHC had to walk away with two victories. In the first game the girls dominated Woodcroft, winning by 75 points in a convincing fashion. All players showed their talent and contributed to the win. In game 2 against Immanuel, the girls immediately had to adjust to questionable calls by referees and the way the game was called impacted the flow of the whole game. Despite this, SHC took the lead mid-way through the game, however Immanuel had some luck go their way and won the game in the final minutes. I am extremely proud of the girls and it was a lot of fun coaching them. Shout out to Grace, Keeley, Zhanae, Sage, Rosie, Sophie, Caity, Maddi, Alana and Imogen.

Year 8/9 Boys Basketball

  • SHC (41) defeated Blackwood High School (39)
  • Brighton (61) defeated SHC (29)

The Year 8/9 basketball team took on Brighton and Blackwood in a round-robin at Brighton Secondary School on 1st November, with a place in the final eight up for grabs. Blackwood provided a tough first match-up, and SHC was only able to take the lead inside the final minute for a 41-39 victory. Sean A’s corner three late in the game was pivotal. Against Brighton, we were outplayed by a strong opposition who will no doubt be a strong contender at finals day. A huge second quarter run by Brighton put SHC on the back foot, the final score 61-29.

Year 7 Boys Cricket

  • SHC 1/130 defeated Cabra Dominican College 8/104

After comfortably winning their minor round matches, the Year 7 boys’ KO cricket team made it through to the T20 Finals Day on November 18th. Having to win their semi-final to see themselves through to the grand final, SHC played a tough opening encounter with Scotch College. Unable to restrict the opposition to under 95 runs off their 20 overs, the loss saw us playoff for third place against Woodcroft College. Batting first, we posted 123 thanks to some strong batting partnerships in our middle to late order. The task of chasing the runs became too difficult for our opposition, as our bowlers applied relentless pressure that led to taking wickets at regular intervals. The team’s third place finish was a testament to their effort, encouragement, and commitment to one another.

Year 8/9 Boys Cricket

On Monday November 1, the Year 8/9 boys’ KO cricket team travelled to Adelaide High to playoff for a spot in the final. Winning the toss and choosing to bat, SHC finished their innings off strong to post a competitive total of 124 off their 30 overs. Our tight bowling and athleticism in the field created pressure on the opposition batters and ensured they earned every run. Taking the game down to the wire, our boys eventually lost in the penultimate over. Despite the heartbreaking loss, the team’s competitiveness and effort could not be questioned, and they will no doubt be determined to go further in next year’s competition. Watch this space!

Year 7 Girls & Boys Tennis

  • Year 7 Girls Tennis – Fulham North Primary School (36-6) defeated SHC (1-0)
  • Year 7 Girls Tennis – SHC (36-6) defeated Gulfview Heights Primary School (7-0)
  • Year 7 Boys Tennis – Fulham North Primary School (35-5) defeated SHC (22-1)
  • Year 7 Boys Tennis – SHC (36-6) defeated Gulfview Heights Primary School (1-0)

On Friday 5th November a group of Year 7 students competed in the Statewide Knockout TennisCompetition at the Seaside Tennis Club, Henley Beach. The conditions were perfect and the competition was fierce. While SHC did not advance to the next round of competition there were some really close matches and it was great to see the sportsmanship displayed by SHC students – well done to all involved.   SHC finished the day in third place overall.

Year 8/9 Girls & Boys Tennis

  • Year 8/9 Girls Tennis – SHC (31-5) defeated Tatachilla Lutheran College (9-1)
  • Year 8/9 Boys Tennis – Aberfoyle Park High School (18-4) defeated SHC (15-2)
  • Year 8/9 Boys Tennis – SHC (24-6) Tatachilla Lutheran College (3-0)
  • Year 8/9 Boys Tennis – SHC (20-5) Unley High School (1-12)

Both the Year 8/9 Girls & Boys tennis teams played qualifying matches on Tuesday 16th November at Happy Valley Tennis Club. The girls beat Tatachilla Lutheran School 5 sets to 1 to move through to the finals. The boys team played a round robin against Aberfoyle Park, Tatachilla and Unley, but it was the first game of the day against Aberfoyle Park where the story was told. All matches were of a high quality; Aberfoyle won both doubles clashes before the singles matches were split 2-2, Aberfoyle claiming the overall result 4-2. The boys had strong wins later in the day against Tatachilla (6-0) and Unley (5-1).

After beating Tatachilla in Round 1, the girls team progressed through to the finals round of competition held at Peake Gardens Riverside Tennis Club and brought with it some challenging competition.  The first matches of the day were against Trinity College and Sacred Heart proved to be a strong competitor, winning 5-1 sets.  The second round was played against Henley High School and definitely brought some fierce competition.  Despite their efforts, Sacred Heart were defeated in all 6 sets.  The final round was against Kadina Memorial School and the competition was testing once again.  Sacred Heart won this round 4-2 sets.  Overall, the team came 3rd in the Knockout competition.  I wish to commend Isabella O’Reilly, Kate Miyasto, Naomi Miyasato and Amelie Fassina for their efforts throughout the competition.  They showed a true level of determination, passion and positive sportsmanship and represented the College with pride – well done girls!

Year 7 Girls Volleyball

The Year 7 Girls Knockout Volleyball team played in a round robin style competition against Crafers, Hallett Cove, Marryatville, Northfield and The Pines Primary Schools and finished equal second in the minor round of competition.

For the first time, Sacred Heart entered a Year 7 team into the Knockout Volleyball competition. After competitive trials, eleven year 7’s were selected to represent the College. The players were very proactive in working together as a team, attending additional training sessions in the lead up to the competition. On the day the girls were up against some strong teams, where on many occasions the ball was spiked over the net. To overcome these powerful spikes, the girls focused on their movement to the ball and passing technique, finishing the competition with two wins out of five games. Over the course of the day, the players demonstrated tremendous improvements in their on court communication and spatial awareness. I congratulate all players on their sportsmanship. GO HEARTS!

Year 7 Boys Volleyball

The Year 7 Boys Knockout Volleyball team played in a round robin style competition against Hallett Cove, Marryatville, Northfield, Stirling East and The Pines Primary Schools in the minor round of competition.

On Tuesday 2nd November the Year 7 boys volleyball team participated in the South Australian Schools Knockout Volleyball Competition. As the day commenced at  Lights Community & Sports Centre, the team got off to a flying start winning the first match of five. The boys then unfortunately lost the following 3 matches, however they clawed it back in the last game coming from a set down to win the thriller match. Unfortunately, the boys team did not qualify to move on to the next round of knockout; however they showed outstanding skill throughout the day, which is a great positive for the SHC volleyball program moving forward.

Year 8/9 Girls Volleyball

The Year 8/9 Girls Knockout Volleyball team played in a round robin style competition against Adelaide Botanic, Mitcham Girls, St Aloysius and Unley High School and finished in third position in the minor round competition.

The Year 8/9 Girls Knockout Volleyball competition was played in week one of Term 4. Due to Year 9 camp some students could not take part on the day. Those selected, including several year 8 students, showed determination and perseverance to play as a tight-knit team. Over the course of the day, the players’s teamwork, enthusiasm and skills dramatically improved despite this being the first time playing together. The team finished 3rd overall on the day, competing in some nail biting third sets to take the win. I congratulate all players on their sportsmanship and zest throughout the competition. Well done.

Year 8/9 Boys Volleyball

The Year 8/9 Boys Knockout Volleyball team played in a round robin style competition against Adelaide Botanic, Hamilton Secondary, Seaview and Unley High Schools, winning 1 game and being defeated in the remaining 4 games.

The Year 8/9 volleyball team had a fantastic opportunity to show everyone what they are made of at the South Australian Schools Volleyball Knockout tournament at the start of Term 4. The boys started the day great winning their first game. Unfortunately, they then went on to be defeated in the next 4 games, not securing a spot in the next round of the tournament. The majority of the team was made up of Year 8’s so what the boys achieved was outstanding. The amount of potential the boys showed is very promising when looking into the future of volleyball at SHC.

Champagnat Sport

The Champagnat Girls have experienced great success in the SACSSGSA competition this term with 11 teams finishing in the top two positions across Touch Football, Basketball, Tennis and Volleyball. We congratulate the following 6 teams for concluding the season at the top of the ladder:

  • Touch Football (SHC 2)
  • Tennis (SHC 2)
  • Basketball (SHC 3)
  • Volleyball (SHC 1, SHC 5 & SHC6)

Although most sports have concluded for the year, our Year 7 Volleyballers still have two rounds left to play in the Junior Volley competition at Brighton Secondary School. The eager year 7’s have been committed to early morning training, showing significant improvements with tactical awareness and presence on the court, and have demonstrated excellent sportsmanship at games throughout the term. We wish them all the best in the remaining matches of the season.

Year 10 Knockout Basketball

On Wednesday, 10th November a team of 10 enthusiastic basketballers headed to the Lights Sports and Community Centre to play against 7 other schools in the Year 10 Knockout Basketball finals day. Having had solid wins against Cabra and Unley in the preliminary rounds, the boys were excited to be playing Trinity in the opening round. In what was one of the matches of the day, Sacred Heart shot on the siren to win by 2 points. Heading into game 2 on a high, the team fell flat against Henley but managed to turn their form around to defeat Woodcroft in game 3. Unfortunately, Trinity defeated Henley in their pool game, leaving SHC, Henley and Trinity tied on 2 wins and 1 loss, with the final result coming down to goal difference. SHC finished 3rd in our pool, heading into a crossover game vs Modbury in which the year 10’s won finishing 5th overall in the competition.

Boys Volleyball

This term the open B boys volleyball team played a short 5 week season. During this season they faced off against tough opposition in Nazareth College, St Michael’s, Concordia and Prince Alfred College and came through the Whole season undefeated with a clean 5 and 0 record. They were superbly led by outgoing year 12’s Ben Bussenchutt, Jared Irvine, Ethan Tinnion, Lachlan Fowell and Toby Burghardt. Congratulations to all involved and we look forward to seeing the boys back on the court in 2022.

Boys T20 Cricket

The First XI competed in a T20 competition during term 4. The competition consists of 2 pools of 5 teams, with the top place teams from each pool moving through to the Grand Final SHC had a poor start losing to Scotch College at home, before winning the next pool games to finish with a 3-1 win/loss record. This put us equal with Westminsteer, however due to superior percentage, SHC moved through to the Grand Final, played at Adelaide High School, against Adelaide High’s 1st XI team. Unfortunately SHC could not get the job done against a highly talented Adelaide High team, however to make it through to the grand final was an amazing achievement.

Girls Basketball

This term we had 4 Open girls Basketball teams compete in the short 5 week Catholic Girls Association competition. Our Open A grade team has dominated their division with comfortable wins every week. This is the last hoorah for many of our A graders (and a couple of C graders) as they finish their schooling this year. It has been a difficult and often disappointing 2 years of Basketball for these girls due to Covid, with cancelations of matches, carnivals and exchanges. Despite this they have built resilience, remained positive and supported each other throughout their time at SHC. I wish them all the best in all their future endeavours.

Our 3 C grade teams also dominated their division. It was obvious that our competition was going to be against each other. So the showdowns were on. Congratulations to SHC 3 for finishing top of the table with a final nail biting 2 point win over SHC 2. All three teams have developed exceptional teamwork and have been able to build greater confidence to shoot and take on a defender. This will help them for next year’s stronger term 1 competition.

Thank You to our coaches this term; Jordan Walker-Roberts, Chelsea Giles, Eliza Hunter and Halle Njoroge.

Girls Volleyball

The Term 4 Volleyball season was again eagerly participated with SHC entering 4 Senior teams. Our SHC1 side were successful in the Open A division winning 4 out of their 5 games and finishing in first place for the Term 4 season. Our SHC2 Open B1 side faced a tough draw but managed a pleasing 4th place finish.  Our SHC3 and SHC4 sides entered in the Open B2 competition were highly competitive with our SHC4 side going through undefeated to finish in 1st place and our SHC3 side only dropping the one game to finish in 2nd place overall.

Congratulations to all involved, we look forward to seeing you all back on the court in Term 1 2022.

Girls Touch

After winning the Open B Term 1 Touch competition, our Open Girls Touch side continued their success in the Term 4 competition. The team only dropped the one game for the season to finish a pleasing 2nd place behind Seymour in the Open B competition. With the SHC team consisting of players from year 8 to year 10, the girls will continue to be competitive in the Open ranks for some years to come. Congratulations to all involved.

Mountain Biking Championships

On Friday 15th October, Sacred Heart entered 14 teams in the State Mountain Bike Championships held at O’Halloran Hill Recreation Park. There were over 650 competitors at this event. Each team had between 3 and 4 riders in which they rode a continuous loop circuit.

The U13 and U15 division rode for 2.5 hours and the U17 and U19 division rode for 3 hours. The track was extremely wet and muddy due to recent rain but our teams battled through the day. One of our u15’s team won their division and the U17’s team finished in 2nd place. This meant that Sacred Heart finished in 1st place overall, which was an outstanding effort. Many thanks to the parents who assisted on the day.
