National Boarding Week (15-21 May)

This week marks National Boarding Week (15-21 May) and to celebrate this occasion, we have held a number of fun events throughout the week.

We acknowledge all of our Boarders who call Sacred Heart College their home away from home and we give thanks to the Boarding Staff who work around the clock to ensure a safe and happy Home for All Hearts. Today is National Boarding Parents Day and we also recognise the important role that our parents play in creating a positive and successful Boarding Community here at Sacred Heart College.

2022 Catholic Education SA Awards

Congratulations to our Grounds Manager, Paul Morgan on winning the 2022 Education Support Award at the inaugural Catholic Education Awards held in the Br Joseph McAteer Centre on Thursday evening!

Paul has been a part of the Hearts community for 36 years and epitomises the Love of Work and Family Spirit which Marist educators are known for.

Whilst Paul’s primary work involves maintenance of the College’s impeccable grounds, his contribution to the College extends far beyond in his involvement with students and staff through voluntarily taking part in Marist programs, overseas Immersions, and Year 12 Retreats. He has far exceeded the expectations of his role and thousands of students have benefited from Paul’s service to the Sacred Heart College community.

We are extremely proud of all Paul has contributed to the life of the College and catholic education.

You can read more about Paul’s achievement at: https://awards.cesa.catholic.edu.au/recipients/award-recipients-2022

Congratulations, Morgs!

Marcellin Student Leadership Formation Day

The formation of the College’s Student Leaders continues to evolve and last Friday, the Marcellin leaders were involved in a highly engaging and interactive session with Br Tony Leon. With a focus on communication in a Marist environment, our leaders were provided with strategies to lead with presence and positive body language, asking the right questions at the right time and listening to the answers with humility and compassion. A huge thank you to the Year 10-12 leaders for the way they engaged in the session and we wish them well as they continue their leadership journey.

“The leadership formation session was eye-opening and interesting. Marist leadership is about coming together, working together and making change. Communication requires two people listening and talking” – Emerson.

“Friday’s experience brought the leadership team closer together, we learnt more about ourselves and our peers” – Conor.

Pedal Prix Hearts

Last Saturday 14 May, 36 students from across the College took part in the revamped Pedal Prix season competing in Race 2 at The Bend Motorsport Park in Tailem Bend. With limited time in the trikes due to training venue restrictions, the students made the most of sessions at Champagnat Campus to learn the basics, whilst returning riders helped out with their personal experiences of riding in previous events.

The Bend has fantastic facilities, allowing teams to set up in the actual Pit garages to support their teams. Spectators have great views from the grandstands and atop the main building over the entire track. Even The Bend has its own ‘crash corner’, a tight hairpin that saw our brand new trike, HeartBeat roll on its very first lap! After the initial nerves wore off, our teams settled into racing and performed admirably achieving the following results:

BraveHeart – Seniors
17th place in Category S2 with 53 laps and a fastest lap speed of 4.52 mins at 41.94 km/hr.

HeartBeat – All girls team
23rd place in Category S2(F) with 51  laps and a fastest lap time of 5.14 mins at 38.95km/hr.

HeartBurn – Yr 8/9
30th place in Category S2 with 23 laps and a fastest speed of 5.16 mins at 38.72km/hr.

HeartAttack – Year 7
31st Place in Category S2 with 26 laps and a fastest speed of 7.07 mins at 28.67km/hr.

Special thanks to all who help with maintenance and support tasks to ensure the event ran safely and smoothly. Also, thanks to the parents who pitched in to help out with a variety of jobs: Covid marshalls, track marshals, assistance with teams in the pits and those who supervised in The Paddock area.

We look forward to our next race on Sunday 19 June at Victoria Park Racecourse!

Year 11 & 12 Geography Excursions

Year 12 Geography students visit Adjahdura Narungga Land (Yorke Peninsula)

On Sunday 15 May – Tuesday 17 May, our Stage 2 Geography cohort travelled to and around Adjahdura Narungga Land (Yorke Peninsula) on a field trip linked to their summative assessment. The group had the privilege of being led and guided to significant Adjahdura Narungga cultural sites by Adjahdura Narungga elder and tour guide, Quenten Agius. The students were able to build a positive bi-cultural relationship with Quenten over the three days to better understand the impacts the wider tourism industry has had or is having on sites that are culturally important to the Adjahdura Narungga people.

Over the three day period, students:

  • Heard and observed the impacts of colonisation on the Adjahdura Narungga people and their land.
  • Heard, visited dreaming sites and understood the meaning behind Adjahdura Narungga language and lore stories.
  • Understood how the contemporary Yorke Peninsula community are attempting to build positive relationships to try and conserve significant Adjahdura Narungga sites.
  • Discovered how current legislation and bureaucracy is preventing the sustainable cultural management of significant Adjahdura Narungga sites.

Using the data and fieldwork collected, students will compile a report illustrating their findings to then provide recommendations as to how to better manage the negative impacts on the significant Adjahdura sites.

Many thanks to Quenten Agius for sharing his culture and life so openly with the students for the 10th year running. We value his open relationship with us and look forward to working with him in the future. It was a very valuable opportunity that most Australian people do not get to experience and one that will provide another element of depth to the students’ work and geographical ideology going into their final year of senior schooling. A big thanks to the trip photographer and staff support person, Sarah Melhuish for supervising the students and supporting me to ensure the success of the trip. Your valuable input is much appreciated.

Year 11 Geography students’ coastline visit

On Wednesday 11 May, our Year 11 Geography class completed a fieldwork analysis study on the sustainability of coastal management along Adelaide’s metropolitan coastline. This excursion forms the practical part of our learning topic to encourage students to better understand how to manage community ‘green’  spaces and the facilities within them. In doing so, we also identified further sustainable management ideas for our coast which will be forwarded on to the Department of Environment and Water and the City of Holdfast Bay for possible future action.

Marist Theme Songwriting Competition Winner

The Marist Theme for 2022, Known and Loved – Dignity for All, speaks to what is at the heart of the Gospel message – that every human being, no matter who they are or where they come from, possesses dignity because they are created in the image and likeness of God.

To reflect on this theme and the wonderful Marist theme image by Margherita Gallucci, we introduced a song writing competition at Sacred Heart College. The winning entry was written by Year 8 student, Alistair Larsen, with a friend from another school, called, ‘We Run Away’ reflecting on the plight of refugees:

We Run away from worries,
We Run away from doubt,
We are all different,
And that’s what we’re about

We have each other and that’s all we’ll need
And with the work of our friends we’ll build a community.

Congratulations Alistair on your brave and compassionate song!

Reading over this edition of Hearts News is a welcome reminder that we are returning to a degree of ‘normality’ as far as school activities go! Whilst we are clearly still dealing with a pandemic, it’s heartening to see excursions, camps, sports and other curriculum extension activities back on the calendar – and with huge support from our students. Whilst our classroom learning is of significant importance (and, clearly, our core business), we believe that the sense of community that comes from these “outside of the classroom” experiences are what makes Sacred Heart a special community to which to belong.
